Hey there, I'm new to the forums. I'm painting some orks right now, but to take a break I decided to paint some termies as Deathwing. What's the best way to go about it? Undercoat with a light brown and work up to bleached bone or just start with bleached bone and ink/wash the joints?
Thanks

It can be done a variety of ways. I start dark and work up to light but I've also seen good examples of starting with bone and washing the model with Gryphonne sepia and then touching it up after. The latter is probably faster but I don't think you get the same depth as starting darker.
Hope that helps.

I´d go Light brown, and depending on your time, either mix more and more white into this as you highlight, or go:
Light Brown (Possibly Bronzed Flesh)
Bleached bone
Wash with Sepia
Bleached bone again
Sepia again
Final highlights with skull white.
Remember to thin your paints when you´re doing this many layers on a model.
Should give you a nice finish to the armor bits.

heres what I do to my termies. Its not too in depth, or too long. For sure it wont win any golden demons, but it doesnt look bad.
Start white
undercoat bleached bone wash with badab black.
thats it. be sure to pick out your bits before you wash.
for metal-
start white, paint black
paint boltgun, light drybush mithril silver, badab black wash.

Thanks for the help The next question is........ when using matte medium what is the best ratio of paint to medium. I've been mixing about a 1:1 and then adding a drop or two of water but the paint still looks a little grainy.

What paints are you using? If you're using craft paint such as from michaels, the pigment is very grainy compared to hobby paints such as GW, Vallejo, or P3. There's only so much you can do with the craft paints.

It's gw stuff... They just don't seem as smooth as they did when they were in the little screw-top pots.

Your paint may be drying out. Add some water or medium and give it a good shake to get it back to the right consistency.
