In our super anniversary episode 26 we have a detailed review of "Starcraft: The Board Game" along with with the recently released "Broodwar" expansion by Fantasy Flight games.
The wives score an interview with Sally Karkula, an associate producer at Fantasy Flight Games. Nicole and Karen get the scoop on what it's like for a lady to work in this male dominated industry. And will she dish on her fellow FFG co-workers?
Finally, Craig, Raef, and Russ look back on the first year of the D6 Generation with some voicemail help from our listeners.
All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:
- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- Contests
- & More
Please let us know what you think!

Russ! You're the man! Way to come back with the defense of Star Wars. As the Wives were going off, with their "Phantom Menace" line, I was muttering "Star Trek V, Star Trek V" under my breath. I'm glad you were there to defend the Lucas Legacy.
Another fun episode, thanks.

Great episode guys and wives!
I really enjoyed the year in review, and darn you guys for making me want Starcraft now.
I've narrowly avoided buying any of FFG's huge box games in the past. They're phenomenal, I know, but they are usually such a large investment of time to play that no one really wants to play. *cough* Twilight Imperium *cough*
This one might just make me pony up the $90 thanks to your review. It sounds like something that could actually get done in an evening.
I loved the entries for the best show moments, and I had totally forgotten about the 250 pound stripper pole limit story from Gen Con. I do remember laughing about that nearly to tears and it made me laugh this time around too. Still not -my- favorite moment, but alas, I didn't think to enter it.
Speaking of Gen Con.. Sounds like you guys are all planning on coming this time, and to that end, my friend Dan had an idea he wanted me to pass along to help you get there. His thought was that you should make up a D6G patch of some sort. Something that could be sewn on the ubiquitous gamer backpack, or Battle Foam cases or whatever. Something to tell other gamers that they, in their all-encompassing awesomeness, are a fan of the D6G and helped support your trip to the biggest game con in the U.S.
You could then give away those patches, much like the incentives that public television uses to try and get you to support them, as a gift for a certain level of donation that would both cover the cost of making said patches, but also help fund the Gen Con trip.
As a bonus, perhaps being in possession of the patch at Gen Con would also allow admittance to a group function of sorts. Maybe just a get together at one of the local pubs or restaurants as a meet-n-greet, or something to that effect.
If the patch was a success, you could make new ones for each year. Loyal listeners would wear them like medals of honor.
Anyways, just a thought. One way or the other, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys there.
I may also have to come to Adepticon to come root for Craig! It's only about an hour's drive for me.
I went several years back and wasn't that impressed, but now it sounds like it's grown quite large so maybe it's worth a revisit.
Go Craig!

Another excellent and epic length podcast. Way to go guys! Whenever I see a D6G episode pop up on my itunes I no I'm not gonna have time for any other podcast that day - in fact if I'm in the office, and so being constantly interrupted, 1 D6G episode will probably last over two days!
Starcraft board game eh? I was aware and curious before your review now it's yet another game I desperately want to play yet will have absolutely no chance of persuading my gf to play it, just like BSG, Descent, Shadows Over Camelot and many more, (she has something akin to an allergic reaction to anything invoving orcs, elves, aliens or spacecraft). Oh well I still have a chance with Carcassone.
Really enjoyed the flashbacks of all the best bits, jogged my memory too - my fave D6G moment, and my memory is poor, was when on interviewing someone in LA (was it Yakface? Damn memory) Rafe was informed that Hollywood really means "garbage and transvestites!"
Keep 'em coming guys and gals.

Very nice episode.
I'm intrigued about Starcraft, but it seems to me that having three quite different armies is potentially very unbalancing. What do you think about adopting more of a Eurogame mechanic and instead having players select the army to play each turn, first player choosing first, etc, and then who's the first player is shifted one step clockwise each turn? Or perhaps having some kind of bidding mechanic each turn.
(just kidding)
On a more serious note, what do you think about using slightly modified rules from that game as the campaign system for another game? For example 40K, and then fighting the battles as 40K battles on the tabletop? Naturally you'd need to change the research mechanic somewhat.

*sigh* Yes, Jar Jar is the worst thing in the history of film. (I like to think that after Order 66, the clones execute Order 67 - the Gungan apocalypse.) Unfortunately it's not enough to love Star Wars, you must also assert it's supremacy, Podracer plate or no! All in good fun. That was a fun interview, though, and it was interesting to hear about the FF work place. You ladies have a different interview style, and it led to different topics, which was interesting. I love the boys' interviews, but they focus mainly on innovative mechanics whereas we got a little bit more of the interpersonal world of a game-studio from your interview. I would like to hear more Wives sections like this one. Very crunchy.
quozl wrote:WTF? Is that Craig singing 'Du Hast'? Or does Rammstein just sound like one of his personas?
Yep, that's Craig. Craig actually traveled briefly with Rammstein during the 1998 American Family Values tour when Till Lindeman (lead singer) succumbed to the New England weather and became ill and unable to sing. Craig had been singing loudly in the mosh-pit section at the show where Till's voice gave out, and Craig was recruited that same night. You can see a really poor quality Youtube vid of one of his stage appearances here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2b1D5w82yU
In all seriousness, that was a great cap to a year's worth of podcasts. The d6G really is the best gaming podcast I've come across, with the right combo of depth and breadth of discussion topics. What I appreciate most is the time you put into each topic, be it interview or review. There's plenty of meat (or tofu) in each session. I have to say that I agree that the interviews have been awesome. I hope to see a good lineup in 2009. Actually, let me revise that. What I appreciate most is the attitude the D6G maintains while it does all these great things. Playful and intelligent, and critical while remaining hate-free.
As I was listening to the show and thinking about what might be coming down the pipe, my one fear was that it might run out of steam midway through the year. I pray this won't happen! Keep up the great (though hard) work, and we'll keep up our enthusiastic support.
Game on, Brothers and Sisters, game on.

Well, I'm a huge Sci-fi fan in general, filled with love for both Star Wars and Star Trek. But both universes have their warts. Star Wars has Jar Jar and mediclorines, and Star Trek has whale transportation, V-ger, Wesley Crusher, and any episode of Next- Gen where Riker doesn't have a beard.
With no-hate on the show we should probably remember that both series also are home to two of the greatest Sci-Fi movies ever made:
The Empire Strikes Back

Loved the episode. Starcraft looks fantastic, looks like a game I'd enjoy.
Those clips were pretty funny... I can't believe I won the contest! When I heard that pole dancing clip I thought for sure I had no chance for 1st place. Raef's clip as Peter Lipton was an awesome throwback... I immediately went back to the original episode and listened to it.
The Hollywood minute was really insightful this week. I'm enjoying them more and more, as we get a more intense look at Raef's battle ( & love affair) with MMOs.
Congratulations on a very successful first year. Looking forward to many more of your kick-ass podcasting.

- Human's right, the Peter Lipton bit was frakkin' hilarious.
Craig - Sorry about the Rick Roll; I couldn't help myself.
Russ - I wanted to thank you for something you mentioned in passing during the last episode which REALLY helped me out in my Tannhauser games - the headlesshollow.com. I had no idea that place existed, and it really solves one of my problems with Tannhouser, which is how long it takes to setup because there is only one rulebook with the equipment loadouts in it.
I would suggest that you might do a feature on sites like this which provide enhancements and play-aids for games people might already own. If you hadn't dropped the name in response to Raef's question, I would have never known.
Another good site in a similar vein but focusing on RPGs is Mad-Irishman.net.
Thanks again, amigos.

Always a quality show. You guys represent our gaming group very well as we play a variety of games (with wives and without.)
Don't know if it was mentioned already but as I was listening to episode 18 and the Serenity mechanics sounds a lot like Savage Worlds system. What say you?
Again, thanks. Bought Pandemic this weekend after listening to your review and it is an awesome game. Got in 4 games, 1 with significant other and 3 with 12 year-old daughter. And everyone had a great time. Can't wait to play with 3+ this coming weekend.
Keep up the great work and for the love of all things random, get Raif some pizza!
