Greetings to all!

With the daily hammering of bad news about the economy, things are more than tight. These days job losses that continue to grow, bankers that keep getting bonuses and a sagging stock market is all the news seems to be able to report.

Well I say enough is enough, and it's fine time someone reported some good news! Luckily, today, I get to be that person, though I did have to ace Ron out and lock him in his office for a day... or two.

On with the news you say? Well here you go:

Reaper will begin reducing prices on all new releases starting with the street date release of 03.30.2009.

Q - How much will the reduction be?
A - Pretty substantial, a complete listing of the 03.30.2009 release is below.

Q - Why a price decrease?
A – With each price increase over the last two years we have seen a balancing reduction in volume. Simply put, we produce less and sell it for more. Sounds good at first, but what it really means is that we have been pricing people out of their hobby and people leaving our hobby is a bad thing at any level.

Q – Why did you wait till now to reduce the price?
A – The main component of our models is tin. The tin market has been in general decline since May of last year when it reached a record high of $25,150 per ton.
Even though the price of tin has been falling, the tin market remains extremely volatile. As an example on October 24th 2008 tin closed at $11,250 per ton, yet three days later on October 27th it closed at $14,995 per ton.
In the last 8 weeks we have seen a very stable pattern with tin closing between $10,800 and $12,000. We believe that this pattern will settle in for a while and believe we can pass this new price and market stability on to you!

Seems like my post a few weeks back about producers' costs falling wasn't so far off the mark!

Cheers

Great news. I'll see if they have any (more) stuff I want.

That's awesome! I love Reaper Figs for special characters and Inquisitor retinues, so I suspect I will be looking extra hard for models to make an excuse for!

I think this is just an excuse. Simply put, this is bad news, since it's an indicator of deflation, where people reduce their prices in an effort to compete, which causes other people to reduce their prices, which in turn leads to unemployment, less money overall, etc. Really what you want is stable prices. Nothing going up, nothing going down.

I think this is actually Reaper's prices go back to what they were before the unsustainable price rise caused by material shortages. Hopefully this is the first company to do so and others such as PP, Battlefront etc. follow suit.

I agree that massive and constant price rises or decreases are a problem. A vicious circle is never good whichever direction it spins.

However, having said that there is a "ratchet" effect that means prices rarely come down as fast as they rise. Partly its due to the fact mentioned by Reaper in their press release that manufacturers or wholesalers have a duty not to devalue stock sold on to end retailers, and partly its because employees rarely get negative cost of living pay adjustments (note I said "rarely", not "never").

Its too early to say whether this one-off price adjustment (I haven't heard of any other manufacturer systematically reducing their RRP - I stand corrected if anyone can point out another) is the beginning of deflation, or really just a market correction following a period of higher-than-RPI price rises that had pushed prices beyond the consumer's ability to pay.

Assuming Occam's Razor I'm not about to man the lifeboats yet!

Well... yes and no. Company I work for has a wage freeze right now. That means that effectively I'm making slightly less money, because of the effects of inflation. A lot of people are facing mandatory vacation days, shorter hours, etc as well. So I think we're already seeing some negative adjustments in pay as well.

Good for you. Could be it's exactly what they say it is. Their costs have gone down, they're also seeing a drop in demand, so they've decided to get more business.
