Drop Trooper with Demo Charge
|
Well after seeing ph34r great coat guard models on here, I decided i must have my own, and what better time to start IG when the new book is coming out so soon? I have a month to get this army into playing state. I have 3 more and the coats took me about 2 hours for 4 models...hopefully as my green stuff skill improves so will my time management skills. This is the first serious project I have undertaken with green stuff, so excuse the somewhat bulky coats and some rough spots.
Credit for this idea goes directly from the man I stole it from on dakka: ph34r
Test model with paint coming soon.

Damnit! Stop taunting me with those awesome pig iron militia heads!!! the miniatures you made looks really good, do the pig iron heads fit onto the torso well or do you have to do filing and cutting down on his body?

Im diggin the great coats, but just a littl opion from how I made my greatcoat guard, use the Men-at-arms if you can. they still make a mean looking cuarg, and greenstuffing isnt a real need. But if money is tight and you have the GS Id say make the coats a little thinner. they look alittle thick to me atm but they still kick ass.

Yeah, besides looking a little "skirty," they're a great substitution for Steel Legion! I'm sure you'll get better with the pattern as you do more of them. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies.
@ thekingofdinner: they fit well if you file down the heads properly, no body work required.
@Zaku I: I considered men at arms, but yes buying two kits (or even the bodies off of ebay) would cost way too much. And yes I do have a ton of GS lying around anyway. The look also wasn't exactly what I was going for either. I'd like to see some pictures of your guard though.
More tomorrow hopefully, but now off to bed.

Looks pretty good. I would focus on smoothing out the coats, reducing the "poof" of the coat at the hips, and making the edges and corners of the coat more sharp. It will be cool to see more of this army get painted up, keep posting pics!

The guy to the far right in the first pics longcoat seems a little bulky, but the rest are looking ace especially the vox caster. The pose on the seregeant is also pretty neat, might i suggest you try and grab the pistol holster bit off a sm/csm and attach it to him.

not really a fan of leaving the coats open. but then again its a pain to close it up without losing detail and then going back in and not stertching it. yeah that did the same thing with my chaosified guard if......
the good thing about closing the coats is that it hides the bulkiness with some sculpting, if its not bulky to begin with.

Well the secret is to completely shave off the shorter skirts which the cadians wear so your longer ones aren't so bulky. I've found that you also have to flatten out the green stuff to about two paper thicknesses to get the desired result.
I have a squad painted, I'll see if I can get it up later tonight.

DITTO!!!
I having been toying with the idea of doing a couple of platoons of IG for inducted guard for my WH army, and these are calling me very very loudly...
I had been holding off because i had convinced myself I don't like any of the IG models enough to commit, but these are far superior to stock models.
Then I'll need some sentinels, a Russ and of course a Baneblade for Apoc games...
