So, I've had a few requests for details on how I painted the NG standard bearer in my Dakka Gallery. I posted in one thread that got buried quickly, PM'd another user, but I've decided to put a thread here in an attempt to inspire others to do freehand battle-standards for their armies. They're fun, and simpler than you'd think.

First things first - Black undercoat.

I then drybrushed the bottom 1/3 of the banner mordian blue.

Highlighted top 1/2 with codex grey.

Painted a circle of mordian blue in the center, using the standard top and shield designs as a reference to work a layer of black back over the areas I wanted to silhouette the face.

Painted UM blue onto most of the moon/face, leaving the suggestions of craters and facial details, once again using models for reference.

Painted Lightening blue onto slightly less of the face/moon, exaggerating detail and bring in my main colour (glad most of my NG are already painted coz I'm nearly out of the stuff).

At this stage I selectively used asurmen blue wash to smooth the transitional areas.

I then highlighted up to white in the same places you would a model, and finished my detail with this stage.

Togue was DA green then a snot green highlight, Earring was painted on in black and finished in two coats of Shining gold, eye and tooth were painted white, then golden yellow.

I highlighted the tooth with white again.

I also used fine black lines around the tooth and eye to make them bold, sharp shapes.

The stars were painted on roughly using mechrite red, liche purple and tausept ochre, distributed randomly, then highlighted white.

After that I glued the sucker to the banner pole, et voila! Unique NG banner! I'll update this thread with my freehand Skaven, Vampire, Dark Angels and CSM banners when I get a chance to upload the pics. Enjoy.

Looking forward to more, and a pictorial step by step would be fantastic if possible?

The Dark Angels one has hardly been touched, so step-by-step will be posted when I've finished it. It's a bit difficult because I get someone else to take my pics for me, but since you've asked I shall attempt to deliver. Any other banner/ikon projects that I start will also get posted here.

One quick thing, when I do post some more should I use this thread or make a series of them for each project?

In future, you should check the dates for threads that you haven't found on the first page of a forum. It says the date something was posted above the username and icon of the poster. People don't really like old as feth threads getting bumped without new content.
