There are several ways of doing rivets, really. It all depends on your preference.

You can take some plastic rod (available from modelshops, or online retailers, just google) and cut it in to thin slices. Pick up the slices with the point of a needle or hobby knife and glue those on. (Some people coat the area the rivets should go in glue, others dip each individual rivet in a puddle of glue)

Some people make the rivets from a sheet of plasticard with a hole punch (though this really only works for larger rivets)

If the rivets should go on a small sheet or strip anyway, you can make that out of thin plasticard or metal foil and press in the rivets from behind with the tip of a round file.

I personally use all three methods, depending on where I want the rivets to go.
Hope this helps!

There is this tool I think tailors use it looks like a spur you know like cowboys wore.
I can't find a pic but it has a wood handle and a metal wheel with spikes. Put thin plastic on something that gives then roll out the pattern. There is a leather punch, and brass tacks.

I second the Leather punch.

But a fine point hot glue gun works too, or super glue gel.

If youve got a scrapbook supply store anywhere near. A 1/16 hole punch and an empty milk jug will do the trick nicely.
I've got a blister pack with thousands of punched out rivets now, and use them on everything......it is a bit time consuming to punch them all out though.

Here is one of the very useful "spur"-thingies. They are among other things a medical supply used to test skin sensitivity. The general public can probably find it easiest at a BDSM-webstore under headings like "medical play", "sensations" or "light pain". They often have good mail order services. This one costs around 11 Euro, I'd guess around $15-20. Similar tools are used to score bread before baking it, to make it easier to break off parts. Check at a well equipped grocery store.

Let's just pretend I am a very well educated person with access to a lot of random knowledge. Or lets say "A friend told me about it".

It has nothing at all to do with Slaanesh worship... I promise *shifty eyes*

To be frank, I think the leather hole punsher makes too big rivets even at the smallest size. I usually use the smallest rivet possible from a leather hole punsher and top it of with a 1 mm plastic rod piece, for the bigger, more important rivets.

I use the smallest punch too and I also feel they are a little big.

I am fresh into this vehicle building thing and the leather hole punch was the cheapest and easiest way I could find to do it starting out. I will probably look for a better way later but for now I think they look pretty good and I kinda like the "over-the-top"ness of them for now.

These ideas all sound great.

one more to add to your arsenal, you can take some grey or green stuff, put some in the spot you want the rivet and use the end of a mechanical pencil like a cookie cutter.

You'll get nice even rivets so long as you always use roughly the same depth of green stuff making them.

I guess then it depends on what leather punch you buy, I got mine at a craft shop ad the smallest hole on mine make rivits the size of the bolts/nuts on the ork boy choppas. So just make sure your getting a punch with small enough holes.

I second the craft shop punch idea - they come in a variety of small sizes (and hole shapes, but only the round ones are useful in most modelling) and most have a wee catcher to collect all the hole bits rather than them sprinkling all over the able/floor. Their only disadvantage is that hey're only designed for paper and card, so can only cope with fairly thin plasticard - but for rivets that's not usually a problem.

At my Keyboard

I got mine at Micheals, I believe its from Tandy. As for card think ness? Well the stuff I use is pretty thick so the rivit shows up well. My punch is a pretty good quality one I guess as I have been using the hell out of it for years and it still works fine. My squiggoth has like 500 plus (probably more) in it and I have made plenty of other projects using rivits.
Here is a close shot that will show the thickness.

One more the colored ones are some of the smaller rivits.

Follow the link in my sig and look in the Ork folder or the game room folder if you want to see more "rivit" work.
Hope it helps.

Also, mark where the rivets will go with a fine sharpy pen to help guide you. It sounds simple, but its way easier to rub off a mark than remove a wasted rivet!

For small rivets, get some brass wire (such as you would use for pinning) at a thickness equal to your desired rivet size, drill a hole into your model, insert the wire, cut the wire close to the surface of the model, instant thin rivet.

The medical device is called a Wartenberg wheel and probably isn't the best tool for the job.
