I'm thinking about buying a Tau battleforce from a friend that seems to have a big focus on kroot, stealth suits, and crisis suits. My question is if you would ever use the kroot in an actual game, since they've essentially got bolters on a 7 point model but don't get an armor save but I was thinking about not outflanking and using them beside fire warriors in case of assault where they'd still get a cover save against non flamer fire.

Kroot are a great unit to run to prevent your other units from getting assaulted. I agree that outflanking them is largely a waste, especially since they don't move very fast, and they don't have long range guns, they'll only be able to do anything to enemy models that are right next to the edge they come in on.

I read a list here in which Kroot smoked an army of Emperor's children.

So yeah, I think they're worth running.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

He's talking about Kroot from Codex:Tau.

They're OK in some tau builds, if you just drop them into your list, they will die.

True- they are good as a counterattack unit. Hide them behind Tau tanks using the thing that makes that tanks not skimmers if they don't move.

North of you!

I dont think you should be using kroot as a counter assault unit... I play gaurd and I've beaten them in CC, there best use as stated before would be screening you're more vulnerable and expensive firewarrior squads from assault.

And, what upgrade gives the tau tanks that ability? There already classed as tanks...¿?

They are both tanks and skimmers.
I believe that they come equipped with the upgrade standard.
When the tanks don't move they can be either skimmers or not until their next turn. If they do move, they must be skimmers.

That does not stop them from being tanks.
Furthermore, Kroot=meatshields.
Tau do not have "counterassault" units.
Tau have shooting units, meaning that you eat a squad in HtH and get shot by everything else.

He's talking about Landing Gear. Since skimmers and non-skimmers do not have different LoS rules any more, I think the landing gear is a pretty redundant piece of equipment.

My kid and I were looking at the math on kroots w/ kroot hounds... I'm having a hard time seeing how they could go wrong vs. horde style orks, especially when you include O'Shovah or whatever his name is in the unit. Plop him and the squad into trees, and fire away at units at a relaxed pace. With the 3+ cover save on 7 point units, even if people decide to shoot at you, you "win" because they waste shots.

If they put anything within charge range of your units, you are going to land over 30 wounds making a whole unit disappear before it even gets to attack.

Orks charge you instead? That's fine, you are in cover. You still swing first, and deliver enoughwounds to eliminate the unit during combat resolution.

We haven't seen it actually in action yet, but the numbers seem solid. We haven't looked very hard at this outside of against orks, but without O'Shovah, this unit isn't terribly priced. It is effectively a complete area denial for a 30"ish diameter cirlce toward the center of the board if you place your forest well, and anything that steps inside the circle is accepting the charge.

I find Kroot useful but you must have a plan for them. I typically infiltrate them onto an objective in cover to provide the 4+ save allowing my more expensive Fire Warrior squads to concentrate fire. I would agree they are not really an assulty unit, they have a shooty statline, and on a charge can deal out a large amount of wounds. However, with no armour save, low iniative, and a sergent who costs far to much for 1Ld and 6+ save (only ever worth it against guard, not so much now even). You really have define where they go in your army.

Commander Farsight's army list assrape special rule does not allow you to take Kroot.

If they land, then you take the skimmer base off and you can't see under the tanks.
When you are not landed, you can see the kroot under the tank because you have the skimmer base on.

Kroots are great for the capture and control missions (thats one with objectives in the deployment zones) right? They are just so hard to shake off objectives and forces to enemy to goto them.

However I am making aggressive mobile Tau lists right now so I tend to not bring Kroots but rather fire warriors in fishes.

Yes. The answer is that simple.
I would hazard: they are mandatory. But I'm sure there are those that disagree.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
