I was thinking of going with the Salamanders color scheme. And I was wondering if I could use any black paint primer, and not just the Citadel paint.
EDIT: I would be using a spray can.

Of course you can. Save yourself some money (and some headaches) and get something different. Alot will suggest Krylon, me personally I use cheap dollar store black primer. Itll all pretty much work out the same, and cost alot less. Infact I think Krylon actually MAKES the GW sprays.... something like that anyways

I tend to use either Krylon Ultra Flat Black or the Rustoleum Flat Black

There's a Krylon matt primer at Wal-Mart that I've used with success. There's a specific type that has a flat spray nozzle, which works well for getting even coverage.

Did you also need help with the salamander's color scheme?

Kinda, but the guys at my shop said they were going to help me with that. Though a guide that I could read up on before starting would be nice.

I haven't painted with a salamander's color scheme in a few years, but off the top of my head, a black undercoat, followed by two coats of Snot Green (One coat will be too dark and splotchy. Two will give a more solid, brighter color) followed by a highlight of either a 50/50 mix of snot green and goblin green, or straight goblin green, depending on how much you want the highlight to stand out.

Anything painted black, like bolters, should have a grey highlight.

Just my idea: Painting Salamanders.

Have you assembled all the model?
If not leave the bolter, shoulder pads, and backpack off the model.
1. Spray everything with some cheap black primer.
2. Spray the main body with2 coats of Green spray paint. (do not paint the bolter, shoulder pads, and backpack green leave them black)
3. Paint the eagle/chest in bolt gun metal.
4. Wash the model with Bedab Black (ink wash).
5. Dry brush the model in scorpion green.
6. Lightly Dry Brush the bolter with bolt gun metal, & Lightly Dry Brush the backpack/shoulder pad edges with codex grey.
7. Glue the bolter, shoulder pads, and backpack onto the model.

Done!

Gold instead of Boltgun for the eagle/metal highlights. I recommend Burnished over Shining. Stick with boltgun for the bolters, though.

If you look on GW's website, they have semi-decent painting guides to most of the main chapters of the space marines, under 40k painting articles.

Thanks for the info guys, unfortunately with the tac squads I already put the gun on there. But I don't think I glued the guns on for the marines that came with the BR set. And the GW site doesn't have any info on painting salamanders, just a small background article.

How would I go about painting a chaplain though? Every time I see them they're straight up black...

One or two green spots, like a knee-pad or a shoulderpad (I believe the right pad generally shows the chapter color. It will be in your codex.).

Here is what I have so far. Guy at my shop showed me the ropes and set me loose.
Did a black primer, orkhide shade foundation, a few layers of drybrushed Snot Green, then a Badab black wash, one more Snot Green drybrush, then a light Gobblin Green drybrush, painting the pauldrons, and then one more badab black wash.

I feel the gobblin green was a nice highlight but made it too bright, and the badab black brought it down nicely. Still need to get some boltgun metal, mithril, and scab red for the fine points.

Don't forget gold for the eagles and maybe the details on the legs. I think with a little more control/cleanup on the washes, you'll be set on your way to a great-looking first army.

What do you mean by control/cleanup on the washes?

FWIW I've been using some Tamiya white primer lately, and I really like it. The primer itself is nice, and the spray head on the can is also very good. I tend to think their black would be good too.

Well, unless it's the look you're going for, the wash is a bit splotchy on some of the legs and other "flat" areas. Also, you've got some green spilling onto the black of the shoulder pads. I'm not saying that to be mean spirited. Overall, it's better than anything I did when I first started painted.

I felt like I was using too much ink wash >_>
And yea I'm still learning how to wield that fine brush, I'm not a very detailed person so getting that tiny brush to work with me was not easy, though I will most likely go back and touch up certain spots afterwards. My first concern was really to tone down the brightness that was the gobblin green.

You might want to try a solid layer of Snot Green instead of a dry brush, then just hit some highlight areas with the Goblin Green. The top edge of the knee pads would be a good example. The codex shows some really great photos of Salamanders to go by.

I'll try that on the next batch. TBH I gave them one more layer of snot green and they came out a lot cleaner looking while the cracks are still nice and dark.

Excellent! I think you should post pics of them with the extra layer of... snot...

I crack me up. Seriously, though, let's see 'em!

Will upload later, I may also toss some of the boltgun metal on there too. Also I chose red for the eyes instead of yellow.

Here they are after the addition of boltgun metal, and red eyes. Just missing the decals on the pauldrons.

That extra coat of Snot Green did wonders. Curious, however, whether or not you plan on painting the eagles.

Well I didnt glue down the guns on the BR guys, so I may for them, and I plan on trying for as many of the regular box I have as well, just don't have that paint yet.

Ok, finished the infantry, and I have the orkhide foundation on my tanks. But I'm really curious as to how I should go about painting my tanks. Should I use the same drybrush method?
BTW heres a shot of my infantry. Pretty much all done except for some more detail on the Terminators.
