I saw a suggestion for a carry case here: http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13123 and I'm not sure that I like how little protection there is for my figures.

I have been in the US for the last month or so and I bought some paints and models while I was here. Now I have to get them back to the UK and I was trying to figure out what to do when I came accross the above. I decided to have a go at making my own which in addition to protecting my mini's on car journy's will also have to survive riding in a suitcase through checked luggage.

So here goes.

First I went to wallmart and picked up a very similar case to the one in the above article. It cost around $5 and can be configured to have between 3 and 18 slots. Then I went to Target and picked up a foam mattress liner for $9.99. For this one box I used about one 5th of the liner.

I then chose the number of slots that I wanted and cut out squares of foam to line the bottom of each slot, and corresponding squares to place over the minature. Simples.

While I was in the states I went a bit mad and bought a load of brushes and other tools that I also want to take home you can see from the above pictures that I left the middle section open in order to transport these items. Obviosly I can't use it to transport paint as the pressure difference in the hold would make a mess.

Finally as you can see from the side-on pic the mini's are well protected and I assure you they cannot move around. I shook the box!

The total cost for this project was $7. $5 + 0.2 x $10

Comments and crit welcome.

This makes a Wonderful tote for carrying projects, untis at a time to the FLGS which I am oft to do. But, with the size of some armies would be immensely unwieldy to cart you're whole force in.

That being said you have given me a killer idea on how to cart my commssions around when i go to the store to work on them and home.

Absolutely. This is not a solution for carrying whole armies. But as you say, single units or a few models and some paints/brushes work well.

XD thanks for this, I was thinking of stuff to pad a case I already had (a bigger whole army one) and couldn't think of anything but the egg shell liner will work great!

I wouldnt condemn this idea too quickly, you would only need 2 of those things to transport a GK army up to 1500 pts. The only issue would be transporting the dreds and the land raiders, but that already is a problem.

Suggestion: Put a thick object in place of the models. Put glue on the lid where the foam would go that is on top. Close the lid and let it all dry/harden. Now you don't have to remove the pieces every single time.
