Ok with the run up to challenge Gareth, what better way to ease myself into it then by squeezing a large aircraft kit into my already busy painting schedule.

This purchase is so unlike me. I tend to stick to armies I already own, or already have miniatures for. I don't have anything imperial guard. That might change in the future... I certainly like the idea of having some Imperial Guard/Navy helping out the Ultramarines in Apocalypse (or helping the tyranids - subdued planetary defence force under the influence of the hivemind).

Well I spent Tuesday and Wednesday assembling this kit. It took ages, but was quite enjoyable. I also painted the interior on Wednesday night. Last night (Thursday) I spent 4 hours in the shed airbrushing. I wanted to try that hair spray and salt masking technique to create weathering. Plus I wanted to mask off a lighter colour under belly, and some camo. Results were mixed, I wasn't that impressed in all honesty. I've started touching the paint job up by brush, and think I'll add some more weathering by brush.

Next I want to line the panels, then weather it and add some edge highlights to the most prominent light catching edges. Then I'll start blacking in and adding crew/landing gear etc. Currently no special plans for the base, haven't been inspired to do anything cool. Because I want some jungle fighters, I might just do a normal base and add jungle like aquarium plants at a later date .Should finish it this weekend.

Looks really good. So that salt and hair spray wasn't worth it huh? I've been wondering if I should try it. I might test it out but maybe with sand instead of salt.

Thanx for sharing and keep the updates coming

Yeah for me personally, it didn't give me the results I'd hoped for. I've got to touch it up and make good, which i could have just done in the first place.

Obviously it works for some as their results prove that. Perhaps I need to read up on it more and practice.

Curse you Gareth for stealing my paint scheme! In all seriousness that is a fantastic start to that Valk. How does the vechicle go together? Is the roof separate from the rest of the hull, kinda like a Rhino? Was painting the inside difficult or easy? Just wondering as I'm picking mine up tomorrow.

It's finished! Horay! I bought it last Monday night and started assembling on Tuesday night and I finished on this bank holiday Monday just under a week later. (:

I'm really happy with the outcome, and must have spent 40+ hours on this, it's completely kept me occupied and I've enjoyed every minute. Quite a challenging piece to paint, harder then the Trygon.

I didn't decide how to do the base until this morning, I just didn't know what to do and then it hit me... landing pad! I used foamcore to do a raised step and used textured plasticard. The lights and barrier are from cities of death, the brass icon, is form the brass icons in the GW basing kit. The 51 and the yellow line makes the perimeter of the landing pad. Obviously I was never going to fit a whole landing pad on the base, so I decided to just do the edge, to represent the Valk coming into land. The number 51 just felt right and conjures up images of alien conspiracies.

Yeah that is simply an awesome paint job, love the weathering and the base. Also love the Red Dwarf tie in with Ace Rimmer, "Smoke a kipper for me, I'll be back in the morning"

You're the first person to notice and mention it. You win a cookie (or maybe a kipper...)

Can someone give me the dimensions to the Valk? What's the wingspan vs. fueslage?

Incredible paint job... awesome references (Area 51 / Red Dwarf)

Just brilliant

Have you just gone with the Hellstrikes or are you magnaswapping with the multi rocket pod in the near future?

Wow nice, I can't wait to get my hands on mine. I'm gonna name all the crew of my Valks after call signs from fighter pilot movies, mostly from Top Gun.

i am already ashamed of my valk and im not done painting it!! your use of green on the internal stuff is a really good touch, makes it all more visable where as mine is just bog standard black with a F load of drybrushing. Then again i painted all my internal stuff in an afternoon. But fantastic work, its a credit to your skill.
