Okay, I have to ask -

I'm having a hell of a time painting yellow on the bad sunz troops in my Ork Army. It's very likely beucase I used black base that the black shows through. I layer, starting with brown to golden and finally sunburst but the black still shows through.

Before I prime/paint any more boyz would you suggest priming white instead of black? Or - How do you paint your bright colors?

You could use the Citadel yellow foundation paint. From there, use the brighter stuff.

For my Eldar jetbikes, I just basecoat with yellow spraypaint and work around that by brush for the rest.

Tau sept ochre is a good base on black primer. Build up to brighter yellow from there.

I use bronzed flesh as a base for my yellow. It paints straight on black and then all you need is a coat of golden yellow followed by sunburst. Jobs a good un. You can add in a light brown wash (i use a bestial and brown ink wash) for shade and just add white for highlights.

Just make sure that you get a very good coverage with the bronzed flesh or else it'll look patchy. If you don't have b. flesh just use vermin brown. It should work fine.

As always keep the coats thin, and use a lot rather than one thick one, as that'll look awful.

Good luck with it,

Mookie.

My standby for yellow is to use bronzed flesh, followed by undilluted yellow ink.

if you want yellow with shading done then there is a quick way.

1: basecoat white
2: use brown ink over the white area that will be yellow
3: use the foundation yellow over that, leaving brown in the gaps and holes
4: highlight with a lighter yellow
5: add chips, scratches and burns where needed
6: done

I also prime my models with black, but on areas where I want a very bright colour, I then paint it white before doing the colour. The breight yellow shoulder pads on my marines get painted white, then blazingorange, then many gradual blends of orange and sunburst yellow, then just sunburst yellow , sometimes mixed with awhite for the highlight.

No more brutal honesty,
how about some honest brutality?

I had the idea of using the old GW "Smelly Primer" which is a white primer and hten going over that area withYellow. I'll try it tonight and report back.

i was always a fan of the "brown buildup" until i started using the iyandun darksun foundation paint mixed with inks to get my badmoonz up to speed.

That's one of my Fists.

Probably not worth much to you, since you're basecoating black...

But that's white primer, airbrushed Tamiya (mix of Flat Yellow and a tiny amount of Flat Red), such that it's just a shade darker than GW Golden Yellow.

Gryphonne Sepia goes into all the recesses, then Devlan Mud into the deeper recesses. Drybrush of the Tamiya base color, just to soften and clean up the washes.

One highlight of Golden Yellow, then a highlight of Vallejo Sunblast Yellow (GW Sunburst Yellow).
