A wash is a kind of paint of a darker colour that what you are using that flows into recesses in the model, creating natural shading.

You probably wont need it for ulthwe, being mainly black, you should probably think about codex grey highlights on extreme edges.

What colour are your weapons? The eldar codex ulthwe scheme used bleached bone, easily attained by dheneb stone foundation, bleached bone, devlan mud wash.

For Ulthwe, you need some bone.

To do this I do Bleached bone the a gryphon sepia wash over the bone, then highlight back up using bleached bone again!

To see some examples check out my blog

Here is a quick example of my bone and black wit highlights.

Sure.

Firstly, your black paint looks VERY thick. Two ways to avoid that would be
a) thin your paint with a little water or
b) use spraypaint / an airbrush.

If I was painting large areas of black I'd go for spray.

Highlighting here would be good. See in the photo how the light picks out the edges and the bevels on the canopy of the jetbike?
Try recreating that with some greys. Get some hard edge highlights with a lighter grey.
You could alwasy go for a very light drybrush in grey too.

An easy way to shade the red is with a black, brown or even blue wash. you can then highlight with a red, then a reddy orange.

There's plenty of tutorials for painting gems out there.
Simply put:
*Paint black.
*Leaving top 1/3 Black, paint 2/3 dark (Scab) Red.
*Paint bottom 1/3 lighter (Blood) Red.
*Paint thin highlight on bottom of gem (Blazing) Orange
*Paint small white dot at top of gem.

If you're thinking of painting anything bone, i'd do this:
*basecoat: Foundation Dheneb Stone
*wash: Gryphonne Sepia, Devlan Mud (lightly)
*highlight/drybrush): Dheneb Stone, then Bleached Bone
*final highlight: Skull White (very fine, alone edges)

Yet you've given your jetbikes the Alaitoc craftworld rune. Is this intentional?

Try and get your hands on a eye of terror codex as that is the codex where Ulthwe got their real identity!

It has some great examples and how to paint tips.
