Crazy price for Greatswords?!  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Why do 10 Empire Greatswords cost £25.00?
GW resurrected Michelangelo to sculpt them
The box has 600 different head options
It's a pricing error, GW will fix it eventually
GW watched us fork out £25.00 for 5 Terminators, laughed and figured why not try it with 10 Greatswords?
Hah! I've just bought six Baneblades, £25 is peanuts.

Not convinced their that good sculpts. Basically, if 5 TDA = £25, why not 10 Great Swords for £25 (says GW's accountant)

"GW watched us fork out £25.00 for 5 Terminators, laughed and figured why not try it with 10 Greatswords?"

This probably is closer to the truth than we expect.

Of course, GW then also overestimated the appeal of Greatswords when compared to Terminators...

Agreed, they're not that great (unintentional pun) a unit in the first place. Would more likely use my special choices for cannons and pistioliers.

I'm amazed anyone still buys new GW models for Fantasy anymore?

I appreciate it is still a popular game in some quarters, but as its mainly old blowhards with bellies and beards who play it these days, who tend to have more sense than to pay GW's ridunkulous price tags for stuff, and have a gazillion lead armies from 1986 in their basements anyhow, I'd a thunk it was hardly worth producing new models for the game, let alone placcy humies at £25 for half a unit!

Takes all sorts I suppose!

You missed a possible option, They might be made of an tin/adamantum alloy, that is similar to plastic, but is actually indestructible.

Thing I can't figure out, is why all those old grognards keep disguising themselves as kids and buying starter sets.

Fantasy is going strong in my area and we start up a couple of new players into our leagues each month. No where near 40k in starter sets, but still doing very good.

But I have no clue as to why the Greatswords are such a phenomonally high price for 10 plastic models.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

You mention terminators but what about the price of a blood knights boxed set.Greatswords are overpriced but so are a lot of the models they produce nowadays.

That lotr war mumak boxed set has a rrp of £50 doesnt it ? and at the end of the day it's a glorified model of a wooly mammoth with 13 other bits of plastic.Games workshop couldnt fool me ;-)

My guess is they figured "Hey, currently, it's about $50 to buy 10 of these guys including command! Why not package them in 10's and make 'em only $42? Awesome! Notwithstanding that these are now plastic minis...."

It's really daft.

Especially considering that the amazing Cold One Knights box set costs less than these guys with roughly the same number of models.

Except Blood Knights are all metal, including the steeds, I belive. Price for 5 is about on par with other all metal cav currently out on the market (Gamezone, PP).

The annoying thing is that chaos knights are insanely underpriced compared to every other special (i.e. non core) plastic unit.

Why make the knights so cheap when the lamer greatswords are so expensive.

Quiet, you!
I'm still hoping to pick up another box of Chaos Knights before they "realign" the price.
I am betting they pop them up soon enough

Forever alone

Why are you whining when you can get normal Empire soldiers and use plastic arms with big swords from something else?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Impressive number of respondents. Are there really two people who've bought six Baneblades?

@ Cheese - Your solution is possible if you bought a lot of State Troops (there is option to arm the champion with a greatsword), but it's the principal of the thing that's causing the whining (well my whining anyway).

Of the comparable box sets available (i.e. 10 model Special Choices), Black Orcs, Grave Guard, Temple Guard are all £15.00. Charging an extra tenner for the Greatswords with no discernable reason is nonsensical pricing.

So redshirt yahoo explained it as such: by dropping the 0-1 restriction on units like black orks gw expected to sell loads and thus priced them to cheap (gw and cheap yeah right) but still people only buy one of such units so starting with empire such units will be priced accordingly... he had the nerve to complemend gw on not raising the prices for black orcs etc...

Since they won't sell many, it just guarantees that Greatswords will be - well, great - in the next Army Book. That's the GW way. Models don't sell, improve the rules.

I think Vlad Von Carstein accually runs GW and using his powers of unlife, brought back all of history's best artists. He then made the shambling horde design the minatures, and after all this trouble and him having to control his undead minions(and give them union allotted breaks every hour)Vlad decided that he was going to be mean and make us pay so much because he went to so much trouble.

This is actually exactly how our FLGS rep explained it as well. The Greatswords aren't great; in fact compared to your other special choices for Empire (IC Knights, Cannon, Mortar, Pistoliers, Outriders) the Greatswords almost never get used. Yes some people will buy them; but to justify having sculpted and made them a mold for plastic casting they need to ensure that the models make their money back which means since fewer people will buy them; higher price.

Sad; but it does kind of make sense if you think about it.

Then why release them at all? They could have redone the Imperial Guard infantry sprues with all the NCO and special weapon options.

Why at all? Because it was the only model left in the line that wasn't plastic. They probably figured they may as well finish it off to make the line 100% plastic army.

That's why I'm glad I still have my unit of 20 from 7 years ago. I think the Greatswords took a big hit with the new book. You had a unit with a built in magic banner option. I would take a unit of 20 with full command and the banner of the griffon. Attach a couple of detachments and you have a unit that would stay in to the last man. Now you have to use your State troops banner (if you take a General of the Empire) just to give them a warbanner, or another banner that just doesn't cut it for them.

Oh how I miss the days of this and the Fusilade rule for the Pistoliers.
