Hey everyone, although I'm not the greatest painter, I do pride myself a bit on my conversion work, or rather taking a boring model and spicing it up a bit. I'll be posting more of my work later on, but I happened to take some pictures of my Veteran that I have, stabbing a chaos marine in the chest, after severing both his arms. The stuff covering his body is snow, I went with a snow basing theme on my army, and the effect it meant to be that they're in a snowstorm during this battle.

Here's the final result, all critisims are accepted. (Besides the fact my camera isn't that great)

You've got a good concept. With some work you could do some really mean conversions. But first, you need to work on a few things. Mainly, as you said, your painting. You're applying your paint too thickly. Either thin it out or use less per coat. Also, make sure that your primer is evenly applied. For best results, go with spray primer if you haven't already.

Also, Green Stuff and a modelling tool. As a converter, they're going to be your best friends. The Chaos Marine's "Stock-from-the-box" pose really just looks too goofy. Like he's defying gravity or standing on an invisible platform. You need some green stuff and a modelling tool so that you can give him more of a limp, "Damn I've been stabbed!" pose. Again as well, slow down, and use thinner paints or just less per coat. The thickness of your coats are smothering details and they also look like you're painting over and touching wet areas and it's smearing and whatnot. So just slow down, take your time, and use less paint. Converted models are supposed to act as a showpiece for your army. A centre for detail. So they should be some of the best looking as well.

I appreciate the positive feedback and I figured I'd add a little more backround to my painting.

This is pretty much my first army and I just started playing around a year and a half a ago. I have a necron army, but it didn't accurately prepare me for the kind of detail I'd have to place into a witch hunters army.

Also, I don't have a shread of latent artistic talent, I can only draw stick figures, and the last thing I painted before starting 40k, was a picture of Van Gouh's Starry Night in like 4th grade, and believe me, you don't want to see what that looks like.

I'm learning slowly but surely though, and of course trying to learn how to make my models look better =). As far as the thick painting, I noticed that awhile back and slowed down more and took my time with my models now, this is an older work, I'd say from about 8 months ago.

Like I said, greenstuff and a modelling tool. They'll do amazing things for your converted models. The internet (And Dakka alone) has some excellect GS tutorials. As long as you know what you want the GS to look like, it's very easy to work with. Hell, the Beret and Field cap I made for 2 of my Officers which can be seen in my gallery are made with little more than an Exaco-Knife, my fingers, and some gentle sanding to smooth them out. So repositioning legs, arms, heads, etc... is extremely easy.

You should post some pictures of your updated work as well, so we aren't giving you advice on things you've already grasped. But you should also flip through the Dakka galleries and the many painting tutorials. You never know when someone may have added something that could really help you.

I was also going to draw attention to this in my original post, but I figured one or two things at a time should be enough. But it is true. A Battle Sister's Power Armour probably couldn't lift an SM or a CSM more than a few inches off the ground.
