I am starting a deathwing army of one of the Dark Angels successor chapters. Just got done painting for the most part. Still got some touch-ups and the base to do. Overall i am pleased with the test. Let me know what you think.

I like it! Looks like chainmail with heavy badab black. The metal need to be brought up a notch me thinks. Just a tad by using the base coat on flat areas and one color up for a little shine here and there on the sharp ridges.

Me likey! Looks really good, just a bit duotone-try and mix one or two extra colours in there-but ONLY one or two, you don't want to overdo it.

I know. I'm evil.

I like the concept. However i feel the red lets you down, the metal is great, it looks gothic and weathered, but the red with black lines seems to be missing the depth and attention that the metal has had. But a great idea and metal none the less

Thanks for the kind words. I will try and do some high-lighting. Have tried in the past but always have had poor results.

Somewhere.

Huzzah, another Guardians player. Although your scheme is quite different to mine (I kept the shoulder pads black, the same as the normal marines, and a few other things) I like your painting a lot more than mine. Nice.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

Looks good.

If the black lines are supposed to be writing I have a couple of suggestions.

First, try breaking the lines ups a bit. A few spaces here and there. Even cursive or script writing has spaces in between the words.

Second, you may want to use a pen instead of a brush for the lines. Not a normal pen mind you, but art and craft stores sell some "Micro" pens that have a small point and work well on minis. This will make the lines a bit smaller and will look more like writing than tiger stripes.

If it is not writing, and is striping.....well then ignore me.

Painting the Eagle on the Storm Bolter a different color might help. Is it white like the Eagle on the termie's chest? It appears to be the same color as the storm bolter in the pictures. Maybe Gold? Have you also considered painting the storm bolter a color other than metal? Perhaps Red (in that case you might not want the eagle to be gold) - then it would sort of match the powerfist. Each arm below the shoulder pad having some red on it might be nice.

Thanks for the advice. It is supposed to be writing. I will try the pen. I didn't like the way the script turned out with the brush.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

You might want to try a light grey or even white for the writing, and a much finer brush - On such a dark model the black doesn't stand out quite so much. Use a light foundation paint, because the paint needs to be a little thin when doing writing (thin enough so that you dont need to apply much pressure to the model, to keep the line fine, but not so thin that it comes out transparent).
The technique is harder to explain than it is to do - lightly move the tip across the surface, making tiny random motions and gently 'jabbing' the brush so that you end up with a broken line with slight 'blobs'.
If you can't get/afford a fine brush, you could try with a sharpened damp toothpick (sharpen it more with your knife, the point they come with is too blunt). You will need to dip the toothpick into your paint more often, because unlike a brush there's nowhere to store the paint. also be sure to wipe it clean regularly or you'll lose the point to a build-up of paint.

Certainly much better! Try to keep the writing finer still and make the lines closer together. I still feel that it gets lost against such a dark red.

Maybe try writing with a white or beige to let it stand out, rather than be lost in poor contrast.

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

Im painting some guardians right now too. I use a very fine brush and I use mithril silver for the paint. Shows up well on the red.

I also try to do one large legible letter at the beginning of an area sort of like a medieval manuscript page would have. Clues people into the fact that it is writing.

I really like how yours are coming out though. Keep it up.
