Quick experience with using "Vanilla" CSM... Battle report was an after thought, so no pics :(

I ran a game against a friend playing a mech ork list

My List:

2x Chaos Sorcs w/ MoS, LoS

2x 5 Chosen (5x Melta) in Rhinos

3x 10 CSM (2x Melta) in Rhinos (only 1 unit had a AC/PF, ran out of points)

2x 5 Havocs (4x Plasma Guns) in Rhinos (Sorcs rode with these guys)

1x Predator (AC/HB)

My Opponent (GrimGob) was Playing:

1x Big Mek KFF with PK
1x Big Mek with SAG

1x 14 Lootas (on foot)
1x 12 Lootas (in a Battlewagon, 1 Big Shoota), SAG rode with them

3x 11 Slugga Boyz with 1 PK Nob, in Trucks (Red Paint, Reinforced Rams, Boarding Planks, Bog Shoota)

1x 19 Shoota Boyz, in Battlewagon (Red Paint, Deff Rolla, Boarding Planks, 1 Big Shoota), KFF rode in here.

2x 3 Deffkoptas

I may be a little off on his list but that what I remember

Game was Seize Ground with 3 objectives and Deployment was Spearhead. After objective placement and initiative, I ended up with 2 Objectives on "my short end" of the table, and he ended up with 1 Objective on his short end. He successfully seized the initiative.

Turn 1 Orks:

Trucks move 13" towards my corner. Deffrolla moves 7" towards my corner. Lootas and Big Shootas unload on my most forward place troop unit in a rhino, Destroying the Rhino (Blow Up) and kills 6 models. I pass all of my tests.

Turn 1 CSM:

I secure the 2 near most objectives with my other two troop units, each supported by a havoc rhino, and both in cover (I had the fortune of having a building giving both units cover from his angle of approach. Predator shoots at a Truck, immobilizing it. 4 person unit on foot moves forward, fires its meltas at a truck, KFF is in range and succeeds its cover saves.

Turn 2 Orks:

1 Unit of 3 Deffkoptas come in from reserve on my short edge. 2 Trucks and Deffrolla continue to move forward. Deffkoptas stuns (and destroys the TL bolter) one of the CSM troops rhinos. Lootas shoots with no impact. Shoota Boyz and Big Shootas on Vehicles wipe out the 4 CSMs on foot.

Turn 2 CSM:

1 Unit of Chosen come in from reservces on his short edge. I unload the stunned rhino with the troops unit, making sure Loots do not have line of sight and within 12" of Deffkoptas. Supporting Havoc Unit positions itself within 12" of Deffkoptas, still in cover from Lootas. Chosen Stun and Immobilize a Battlewagon with Lootas and SAG in it. Troops on Ground and Havocs kill 2 Deffkoptas. Predator shoots truck with no effect. Deffkoptas fail their morale and run away.

Turn 3 Orks:

Last unit of 3 Deffkoptas come in from reserive on my table edge (again) . Other Deffkoptas fly off table. 2 Trucks and Deffrolla contiue to move forward. Slugga Boyz in immobilized truck disembark and move towards the chosen. Sag Mek fixes immobilized Battlewagon. 2nd Unit of lootas destroy the Chosen rhino (blow up), but all 5 survive, pass pinning. Deffkoptas get rear shot on Predator and destroy it, and another blow up (lots of sixes!). Lots of other shooting, but no significant impact.

Turn 3 CSM:

Empty Rhino stays on objective to block, while the troops now on the group move into the building and within melta range of approaching trucks and deffrolla.. (scary) . Both Havoc units and second troop within 12" of Deffkoptas. Chosen on ground move up towards Slugga boyz (maybe bad move). 1 Havoc and 1 Troop destroy all 3 Deffkoptas. Other havoc and troop shoots at trucks with no effect (KFF big mek cover :(). Chosen kill 3 orks, and Grimgob intelligently pulls from front denying me the charge (maybe I should have just shot the wagon again :()

Turn 4 Orks:

Trucks and Battlewagon move in. Impassable terrain blocks Deffrolla from going after my guys in the building so he just moves towards my other objective. Moves slugga boyz in back towards my chosen. Lootas from SAG wagon destroy troop rhino (blow up AGAIN) and force them to unload, passing their pinning though. Shootas unload on unit in building, killing a few. Other try to destroy the Rhino on objective and fail. Slugga boy assault kills chosen.

Turn 4 CSM:

Second Chosen come in from reserve on my short edge, but out of range to do anything useful. Havocs move to support troops recently unloaded from vehicle and within 12" of Trucks. My shooting manages to destroy, blow up, both trucks forcign once to Kerrang but near by other objective :(... Meltas shoot into deff rolla but still lives (KFF).

Turn 5 Orks:

Slugga Boyz on foot move into to contest my objectives. Moves the 3rd Slugga boy unit to score his objective. (I start thinking I can easily kill one of the slugga boy units with one havoc squad with the sorc and the other sorc can lash the other sluggaz from contesting the other) More shooting from orks and a few more marines die, but lootas in Wagon shoot one havoc squad and destroys the vehicles AND I roll an 11 on the pin test and FAIL! (start of my pain as 1 havoc w sorc is pinned). Deffrolla with boarding plank within two inches of my second havoc squad assaults and destroys, yes another blow up, the rhino, and guess what... ANOTHER 11.. second havoc squad withc sorc is pinned. Sluggaz on foot assault my troops, but I survive.

Turn 5 CSM:

Basically, with the 2 pinned units I am dead. I move the chosen in to try to kill the Battlewagon, no effect. I already know the game is over sicne without support from the other units my troop in assault is dead. I go through the motions anyways, to minimal effect.

Roll die to see if game continues.. 2.. game ends.. I lose, he scores 1 and contests 2, I score 0. Was a good game all the way up to the 2 failed pin test in row and a critical time.


SAG was not a factor. Lash Sorcs were not a factor. Lots of 6s on vehicle damage results! Arg! Deffkoptas did their job!

SAG probably wasn't a factor because its a total silly unit.

lash sorcs weren't a factor because you failed 2 leadership 10 pin tests in the EXACT turn you needed them to pull him off of objectives. It sounds to me like if you have 2 lashes and the game ends on 5, you win, 1-0, right? And if only one is pinned, you tie, 1-1 or 0-0. Odds of failing two of two pin tests... 0.6% (not even a full percent). Odds of two of two rhinos being destroyed with an 'explosion' result, 25%. Odds of that happening on the last turn of a 5 turn game... 20%. I'd say you have about 3300 games before events unfold in that manner again.

Deffkoptas are one of those units. They just look awful on paper, but end up being such a nightmare for mechanized armies. At least he had them in reserve when he seized. If he had actually gone first, thats a first turn charge.

I only needed 1 lash active to tie 1-1. If the second unit was not pinned I could have won 2-1, since they with the Sorc would have joined the assault with hte other troop unit and crushed the 9 orks that were left, most likely.

Turn 6 would have been scary and I probably would have lost, unless I got lucky and killed the def rolla, since if I won the assault he probably could have tank shocked three units witha deff rolla on turn 6, pretty much crushing me. I need that second unit of chosen to be on the ground 1 turn earlier.
