Hi all.
I've played 40K for 4 years now and have well established Imperial Guard and Space Marine armies, but recently me and some friends have decided to start fantasy. We have each chosen our own individual armies, and I have chosen Empire, however I don't know how to start off. I've managed to get my hands on a Skull Pass mini-rulebook, but I'm not sure what I should start with.
Has anybody got any advice considering I'm working on a limited budget.

The Empire Militia boxes are very versatile. You can create most of the infantry units from bits out of those boxes if you have enough boxes. Maybe a box or two of heavy cavalry and one or two HQ blisters? Cannons are usually pretty easy to find cheap as well.

My advice for this particular statement. Pick a different race. While the Empire is all plastic now they are probably one of the least cost effective. Consider that if you go troop medium you'll have probably two blocks of 25 swordsmen. That's 50 state troops so 5 boxes at 25 dollars per. $125 bucks... Those two blocks aren't even going to be but like 350 points in the game terms.

As pointed out you could make the entire army out of militia; but you'd need a lot of those to get the same armament across your blocks of troops. The cost and look of the state troops has kept me away from the empire for a long time.

You can pick up huge lots of empire troops for cheap on ebay if you watch it closely. Some of them might be partially or badly painted so keep a look out for that. The last edition of the Warhammer starter set came with empire and orcs so there are still a ton of cheap empire to be had out there. The set came with a great cannon, 38 empire soldiers and a general so there's bound to be a bunch of "junk" empire stuff still on the market. If I remember correctly they weren't very customizable but they were very detailed and would be more than suitable to fill out a troop heavy army.
