I finished Lord Commander Dante the other day, and he seems pretty well painted (for me at least, this was a job I really put effort into!) but is there anything else that could really improve the looks of this model? Be gentle, but tell me how it is. (PS, the axe is kinda jacked up because it is a different piece from the bits box, the original axe disappeared at some point while the model was waiting to be painted!)

Yeah... I tried to very carefully hit the crevices in the gold with a wash to give it definition, but it doesn't seem to have worked to well. Gold is the color he his though, according to fluff.
Along those lines, that is why the base is how it is: the rest of my army is based that way (looks much better when contrasting a dark red and gold mini). I could fill back in the sides of the base black, the darkest shade in the base. Do you think that would help?

Did you try hitting the gold with an all-over Ogryn Flesh wash, then highlighting a little more - it would warm up the gold a lot, as it is it's too cold to contrast well with the silver.

For gold my personal process is:
Basecoat Tin Bitz (or Brazen Brass for warmth)
Coat Shining Gold
Wash Ogryn Flesh (used to use Flesh Wash)
Highlight Gold
Final Highlight Mithril Silver on edges and high bits.
I like how the gold is so smooth on your Dante, that's a nice touch.
I'd also hit those kneepads and wings with a pure Skull White highlight, and get some Blood Red/Burning Orange highlights on the red parts.
Some lighter green would look good on the thingy thing.

This may sounds weird but, perhaps try Dwarf Bronze next time instead of shining gold. I find shining gold is okay for highlights, winged bits etc but doesn't look good on a whole model; the Dante model itself isn't very fogiving either, in fact I really don't like that model!
I would personally basecoat in black, then use Kemri Brown followed by dwarf bronze and finally a Sepia or Ogryn wash.
On a technical point of view though I think the paint job is good, I'm just not a fan of Gold... Check out the BA codex, I'm fairly sure they've used Dwarf Bronze on Dante.

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....
First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint |

This is what I did for the gold:
Primed black
Basecoated Tin Bitz
Gave a good thick coat of Shining Gold, but tried to stay way from recesses
Finished with some recess-filling with Badab Black Wash
What I will do:
I'll try hitting it with a flesh wash, and then I'll repaint the rim of the base back to black so it doesn't clash to much with the whites on the model. I'll finish it up by getting another white coat on the kneepads.
Sound good?
