My nephew and I were PMing one another and we were thinking. Would it be heresy to propose putting an Instant Messaging system on the site? It would make things a lot easier when it comes to exchanging thoughts with friends, and I don't think it would harm the integrity of the site. Anyone willing to please post a comment stating your opinion on the matter.

I have considered adding one a few times, but ultimately I prefer to have conversation public so that everyone can benefit from it. You can add your IM details (AIM, MSN, etc) to your profile so if you want to have IM chats you can do so easily

Additionally, I personally find when I'm using a site and get a bunch of IM windows popping up it causes me to avoid going to the site as much so that I dont have to deal with IMs when I just want to lazily browse the site.

Installing an IM fucntion is going to elevate the usage on the site's server.


Furthermore - its not easy to find an IM fucntion.

The usually cost around 500-2k$.

I think its best application would be between potential buyers and sellers; provided both are online. It would expedite the process, I believe. If both aren't online than PMs can be used, I guess, so then the IM system is redundant... It's just easier to swap things in the shop, methinks.
