Getting started for the upcoming SW release

Marines will be biggerised, and to start with I will make two squads of Grey Hunters for practice, and drop pods for them. By these guys are done the wolf dex should be around the corner and we'l have info how the new troops work (example Blood claws, wonder what' going to happen with these guys?) Too scared to build anymore right now.

For colours I have chosen pale grey, darkish red and bone. In my first SW army I was quite pleased with the grey and red but the green was a bit out of place, too intens and candyish, so I chose a bone color to replace it, more neutral and it sort of fits to the savage SW theme. Also decided to do the red bit more dark. I toughed that I was on to something with red triangle unit markings so keeped those aswell, with new design. Then I wanted the power armour to have lots of scratches and battle damage so I swapped the grey to more lighter shade so that I can paint the scrathes with dark grey (Thanks for the tips Migs). One reason was also that I realy hated edge highlightning the power armour, so I decided not highlight the armour and just make it dirty looking so that it has "natural" highlights, something similiar to what Migs did with TWAR.

Chapter is called Red Wolves, not yet shure should they just be one of the great companies that are bit more independent or entirely a new succesor chapter of the SW. I just knew that i didn't want to paint the SW blue grey/yellow pattern (eventhou my grey is a bit blueish )

But enough of ramblings, here's the first test marine completed for the Red Wolves chapter:

And a scale picture of with a normal marine:

I also did a SW army around 2002-2004 which was very nice to build and play with. Sadly around in the 4ed SW wasn't that hot rulewise and now that I look back at my old army it just doesen't fill up the standards anymore. But those who are interested can check them out in here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v112/Northen/Werewolfs/

one sampler too:

And the first Grey Hunter unit primed and ready for painting:

Cool. I like the concept. Are you going to field them as a successor chapter? What colors did you use on them?

Yes, I'm bumping this up a long way, but I think it deserves it.

I *LOVE* this first squad. I love the faded look of all of the colours, they look like real veterans. It's a gritty style that's seeing an upsurge on this site, much to my glee

Looking forward to much, much more awesome stuff.

Very nice, I'd not seen these before. A nice refreshing aproach to Space Wolves: I love the red and bone scheme. As SA says, the gritty realism is great. My one (minor) criticism is that the armour plates don't stand out enough, I would recommend a bit more shading where the plates join one another.

Great work though, I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I have two issues with this army,

1. What Khrangar said

2. Space wolves have no successor chapters, well there was one but it was only briefly existant to appease the ultramarines...

Otherwise i quite like them, decent paintjob and still sort of fluffy for SW.

Let's not get too hung up on what colours space marines 'should be', afterall they don't actually exist. And whose to say that the Space Wolves don't have a successor chapter that no one knows about? Let him paint his models whatever colour he wants. I, for one, like them.

Space Wolves have no surviving successor chapters. However, it's not unknown for a Great Company to pack up and leave Fenris. Sometimes, it is because they end up in a warzone so far from Fenris, they don't bother to return. And sometimes, it's because their Wolf Lord doesn't agree with the Great Wolf, and the whole company goes into exile together.

Thanks for all the nice comments fellas.

I myself consider the Red wolves name more as a name for the great company than the whole chapter. Maybe when the dex comes out and if it has more nice fluff, I migh make these guys more as Bran Redmaw's great company or something. Just knew that didn't wan't to use the sw (blueish) grey.

Not too excited about the new plastic set (thou only seen two) so will continue to scratch build my wolves. But the new set seems to have some very nice bitz that I will use.

Threadromancy!

Not really, as I actually have some real updates. Recently I and few other finnish gamers decied to pull our own "tale of four gamers" project to motivate eachothers a bit. My project is to continue this SW army and to get a playable force by the end of summer (around 1500p-2000p).

And for my first update I have finished last four members of my first GH squad, thou they still need one final coat of varnish.

These guys keep getting quite gritty, but it's just too much fun to experiment with different weathering methods.

First deadline for our project is 15th of April and I would need to have 500p by then. Next up I have second squad of GHs ready. Biggerizing process is done and primed them few moments ago, so pics tomorrow. With these squads I have almost 500p but I guess I'l have to make some HQ as well, just don't know yet which one as the wolf list offers quite a few. At the moment I'l think it's going to be runepriest as I am bound to have at least one of them in my final army.

Let me hear your comments.

Base colour for the armour is Vallejo MP Pale greyblue. Weathering starts with few washes of Badab black followed by few washes of Devlan mud. Chipping is done with dark greys and browns, first sponged and then finished with couple of painted chippings. Finally some MIG pigmets are added to represent some scorch marks and dust. The dark red is done pretty much same with but the chipping is done with medium greys. Lately been throwing in some stains done with mediums mixed all sorts of browns, greys and blacks.

And generelly the colours are not traditionally highlighted, as the weathering and chipping can itself brake the colour's flatness. And strong highlights would be just lost in this scheme.

Thou these guys defienetly have the look I am aiming for with this army, I am not shure if they are a bit too busy with all that weathering. But the fun part is to experiment with all these things.

Man the extra depth and definition of detail achieved by the babak black makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE! Very nice. And a noticeable difference to the first batch. Even in digital images.

Your scheme kind of reminds me of the red scorpions!! I would consider replicating their vehicle scheme, which is really really cool. I can borrow you the FW book with them in it.

Bases are great too. Always a treat.

ps. when the first squad is finished, you should update the first image in the BLOG. It should always represent the current project at its best. Reference to older work comes later in pecking order

Very nice! The final blacklining really does the finishing trick well. Way better this way.

I noticed 2 fists in one pic and 2 meltas in the other. You're painting the packs mixed? Or using the old codex?

Really good start for your army, Northen!

Thanks Hammer!

Well the first squad is built up according the old dex, but the other fist guy is actually a WGsarge (one with the helmet that has red stripe). And if you look closely you can see 3 meltas in the second squad ( one of them will go to the first squad). I am bit struglling which built to use with the GH squads: 2 special weapons & 1 Pfist, 1 Special weapon& 1 Pfist & WG with Pfist and combi weapon, 2 special weapons no Pfists, to give wolf standards or not to give, which special weapons to give (now thinking of two squads with meltas and one with flamers). MOTWs will propably go to all squads.

I forgot the packs get extra special weapon when they're 10 strong. I always build them 9 strong to leave room for character in drop pods/rhinos... So no extra melta for me.

I built my 2 packs with one having all the extra goodies (just for modelling purpoces) and the other being more basic.

I have the results of the last chamber: You are a horrible person.

Just a small point, Sniper scope looks silly on a meltagun - in the same way it would look silly on a sawn off shotgun. And you should drill the Melta Barrels mate!

Other than that AAWOOOOR!

Got to say I love the traditional giant Space Wolf Mohawk on the new squad. I really like the duller look as well.

Thanks fellas.

First patch from the second squad is well on the way. Still need to put some finishing touches on the bases and some more weathering. Pics should up on weekend.
