So I got me a realm of battle board. I'm going to be painting and flocking it up soon. just wondering if anyone has had problems with flock coming off a lot when you store it in the bag? I was planning to just drybrush it and then use white glue and some green flock for grassy parts. Not the longer static grass though, the finer powdery kind of stuff. I just don't want it to all rub off when it's all packed up. Just wondering if I should go to the trouble to flock it or just drybrush the whole thing and leave it at that

Flock it like you would a base paint it let dry then flock it let dry then spray dull coat. That will help seal the flocking to the board. There is also a spray that model railroaders use you can find it in any train shop that does the same.

Oh.. is that spray for model railroads like a real watery white glue that you can get a spray nozzle for? from woodland scenics?

I was going to order GW's big $40 basing kit but I decided instead I'm just going to buy one of those $8 containers of woodland scenics flock, and I'll spray the whole thing black and drybrush the rocky parts gray and the skulls white, then just flock it and it'll be done. Not gonna add extra gravel or anything like that. I figure the less I add the less will get chipped off later. I really just want the flock so the minis will stay on the board better and won't slide as much.

If you're going to use grass, look at some hobby shops. Some of them have some textured mats for model railways and it's way easier to put on of those onto it then add to it with other decorations.

Do exactly that. I bought the basing kit. Ended up only using the brush and a tiny amount of the ochre paint to lighten up my drybrushing. Waste of money. Unless you want the board to look exactly like it does on the promotional image.

I opted out on flock. I will have to be moving my board pieces a lot and I figured that sooner or later it'll rub off and take the undercoats with it. YMMV.

With just paint, do the models stay on there good or do they slide around a lot? The main reason I was thinking of flock was more for traction than looks.

They stay fairly put, unless you knock them over or roll a bunch of dice at them. Putting real heavy models on the slopes might be a problem. I've only tried with my killa kanz, and they stay put.
The surface is a little less, but only a little, slippery than the unpainted surface. I'd say you try it out without flock and see what happens. Adding flock afterwards is not such a biggie. It takes about 20 minutes / board to do all the drybrushing (I did three layers) so it's not like you'd be wasting a ton of time if you decide to flock the board afterwards.

Ninja kitteh is a b*tch. Last night he ate the bosspole on one of my nobz. I really have to learn not to leave minis out in the open. >_<

ok, guess I'll just paint it then and flock it later if I decide it needs it. But now I'm starting to wonder if I should "dip" it, use a light colored primer and paint on some stain to fill in the cracks. I guess either way would work...

I think drying times would be a pain if you stain it.The drybrush is almost cured and ready for varnish when you're done with the board. And I guess you'd still want a matte coat on top of it even if the floor wax will protect the undercoat.

Stock up on at least two cans of spray paint. I used up 2 cans of chaos black and one can of army painter black primer for my board. Getting the coats even was way harder / paint consuming than I thought at first.

Traditional flock looks terrible on these big boards; by all means try it but be prepared to take it off again (if it doesn't flake off itself). I know a lot of people aren't fans of static grass but it really looks great on the big boards, just be sure to press the grass down into the glue rather than just scattering otherwise it won't stick well.

Traction is a problem with models that aren't balanced properly (metal devastators etc), if I ever get one of the boards I will be glueing grit onto the slopes, aiming to get it to look like scree, to add grip.

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

I was going to use sand / ballast on it too but one pet peeve I used to have when playing at an old store was they covered their boards with sand and while the tables looked good, the sand hurt to lean on, and scratched up book covers real bad. So that's why I was thinking of flocking. I do like the look of static grass more, but I worried that wouldn't stick well at all.

Anyway, I'm going to start with 2 cans of cheapy black primer, and see if I can get a tub of medium gray for the first drybrush and then a light gray for the highlights, and pure white for the skulls and then I'll see if I still feel like flocking or adding grass after that's all done

If you do sand paint the board then paint with glue let dry then again with the glue it will help with the sharpness of the sand and seal it down.

Or mix the sand with the PVA and paint that onto the board, put dry sand on any parts you want to look different as when it dries it will look like mud.
