Our gaming group has decided to build a indoor style board, Similar to space hulk, but a little more open in order to allow squads and dreadnaughts to move around. Does anyone have a board like this, or recommendations on construction and materials (mainly concerning the grated floors)?

I've had a similar thought before, and had the idea of making a number of wooden boxes of the same height (about 6") but varying dimensions, painting the tops black, and decorating the sides with pipes, panels, displays, etc. etc. Paint the sides grey, and you can arrange them to make different configurations of open areas, and tight spaces with the bonus of being easy to store too.

I looked into the Hircsh Arts web site and decided that may be out of my college budget, they did however give a cool idea about the stasis tank and the resin. For those of you out there looking for ideas i may have settled on a final project. Using a 4x4 MDF board as a base (cut in half), i intend to form basic wall and room outlines using the famous pink insulation foam, followed by detailed plastic card for the walls. Every six inches or so a solid support will be added, this will give a impression of weight bearing supports in the wall, but also allow me to hid magnets to hold doors into place. I also scored a coupled out non operational dvd and vhs players, who's innards will help provide technical bits that any good star ship would need. Loading bays, hydroponic growing facilites (courtesy of petsmart plants) and tyranid disection labs will all be included. These will provide lots of objectives and replay value to help make the relitivly static setup.
I am still however at a loss of what to use as a floor. Some have suggested a metal mesh. I do not like this option as i have expirenced it, as the board gets played it frays and turns into a thousand well his needles, and the other option is a hard crosshatched knitting net device, something our grandmothers used for cloth designs, but i find this a little frail and bulky.
Ideas? Questions? Comments? Too Long of posts? Bad Grammar? Let me know what you think.

I have a roll of plastic mesh from fly doors (or whatever you call them, the doors/windows panes you use to kee pthe flies out but the air flowing through). The mesh is pretty fine and I bought a roll to use for terrain and stuff.

I might be miss reading this entire thread, but you seem to be the only one who sees a "joke" happening?! Care to explain?
@ Twoshoesevans
One of the members ( Achilles ) here on Dakka, has been talking about a game called Incursion. Its a WWII alternative reality game, but the best part is, its based on the rule set for GW Space Hulk.
They have provided a set of downloadable floor tiles that can be mounted on plastic-card or what ever medium you wish, and the best part is! Its all for FREE!
Heres a link to their site:

The Dakka member ( Achilles ) who was explaining the game has a blog:

Maybe it wasn't a joke, but I had a look at the Iitko site and it looked almost like a joke, all they have are square floor tiles and doors made of plasticard. (Still, not bad in theory, maybe some of it could be useful, or could provide you with a direction)
I keep thinking there might be a starwars thing out there somewhere that you might be able to use. And that incursion stuff looks awesome!

Don't use Hirsch (The Legos of wargames terrain). I know a lot of people are in love with Hirsch, but it always looks so cookie cutter except in a few cases i have seen. Some of it is passable if you then build and detail features onto it, but most mold the pieces and stick them together in very unimaginative ways...
As for design I would make a board first (What size you planning on? 6'x4', 4'x4'???) and then make a bunch of linear walls, door frames, etc. so that you have the ability to mark out corridors and rooms in a totally modular way. Don't build fixed layout or even fixed modular pieces but as many free standing wall sections as you can that can be combined and interlinked on the board size of your choice, etc.
Once you have the board and ability to represent walls/rooms then start addign other terrain items that can serve as cover/obstacles: machinery, piles of crates, compute bays, power generators, piping, whatever...
The key to this type of board is maximizing flexability and modularity, because otherwise your gonna play on it a few times and be bored with it...

I second the mesh for screen doors/windows idea. I saved a roll for terrain, since it looked useful (of course I can't find the stuff, now...). Initial thought was for making tiny chain link fences, but I bet if you glued it to a solid floor, sprayed it black, then drybrushed it, it might make a decent approximation of a tiny grated or stamped steel floor. Try out a little test tile if you can get your hands on the stuff and tell us how it works out.

I use dry wall repair screens it comes and rolls and one side is sticky( its a roll of sticky screen used to repair holes for putty or drywall mud) roll it onto Mdf bored and spray it black, then drybrush it metal. Instant stamped metal floors.

Ah yes drywall screen, as a flooring guy i can get a hold of that on the job site easily.
To the idea the chap who suggested a modular set up i considered this, but i found the work load to be a little overwhelming. One person on Dakka had the clever idea of cutting larger diameter pvc pipe and using it as a tunnel system. This wouldn't be overly difficult, but still alot of work. I don't like the solid wood idea, because in my mind i wouldn't be able to get the detail i desired.
This good ol' german boy used plastic card followed by resin molds. ( http://spacehulk.beckerf.de/html/3d-spacehulk.html) But between working and my chem degree i found that a little beyond my time constraints.
Any other ideas for a modular gaming system, similar to spacehulk, but more open to incorporate squads and walkers.
And of course, this isn't a joke. Anybody who has had the pleasure of playing space hulk knows the possibilities with this style board. Not to mention its the only terrain our entire gaming group would agree to without bribery and beer.
