Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

So I wake up at 7:00am and I get to my first ‘Ard boyz at 9:00am. While I am there I hear about another store that had to push back their ‘Ard boyz to 7:00pm because of commitments to 2 other tournaments. Since I was not happy with my Space Wolves I grabbed my Eldar I got ready to play till 5:00am!

Since I was on the fence as to which army to bring I had my Eldar list and models all ready to go!

When the Eldar Codex first came out I was trying to find a list other than the ones that everyone first gravitated to. I came up with a MSV (Multiple Small Vehicles) list that I thought would work. I tried it out, and I was only winning about half of my games at RTTs, so I ended up shelving the list.

Well, things have changed so I thought I would bring the army out of retirement, now that there is a big decrease in anti-tank weapons, there are no more tank-hunting autocannons, and 5th edition has made it better for vehicles with the improved damage table, and squadron rules.

Also I am always looking to play lists other than the ones that everyone thinks are “top tier”. Everyone knows that Seer Councils and Mech Eldar are good, so I am looking at another way to play them.

Scenario:

One objective in each table quarter and one in the middle of the table.

Massacre
A player has more objectives and has more kill points than their opponent. Winner get 20 points, loser gets 0 points

Major Victory
A player has more objectives and has an equal number or less kill points than their opponent. Winner get 17 points, loser gets 3 points

Minor Victory
A player has the same number of objectives and has more kill points than there opponent. Winner get 13 points, loser gets 7 points

Tie
Both players control the same number of objectives, and the same number of kill points.

Deployment:
Pitched Battle

I win the die roll to go first. I wanted to go second so that I could do the last turn objective grab and stop him from doing the same. The problem is that he would advance under cover of night fight in turn #1 and then he would hit my lines in turn #2. But I thought it would be best if I went first so that I could shot him before he hits me.

Set Up
I basicly set up in the middle of the board with my infantry and wait to see what he would do. He sets up heavy on my right side and I use Eldrad’s redeploy move to move my walkers to the right to counter them.

Turn #1

Top of turn #1

I can’t see anything…it is so dark!!! Curse you Imperials with your spotlights and the Tau with their Dark Sun filters!

Bottom of turn #1
He moves forward!

Turn #2

Top of turn #2
I move forward a little bit. I start to shoot him up and I start downing raiders.

Left side

Right side.
He turbo boosted behind the little hill on the right with his 6 Reaver Jetbikes. So I go after them with my Jetbikes and destructor takes most of them out.

Bottom of turn #2

Getting ready to assault.

He hits my line with a raider squad and wyches. They take out my Storm Guardians and my Dire Avengers.

His wytch squad on the right that are the silver models wipe out my jetbikes.

Turn #3

Top of turn #3
I take care of that raider squad and that wytch squad. My warp spiders try to shoot at one of his raiders, but that shrouding protects them.

Bottom of turn #3
He assaults my war walkers with a raider squad to try to tie them up since they were doing a number on them, but they lose combat and break. His Incubi get out of their raider and wipe out my warp spiders.

Turn #4

Top of turn #4
I counter his attempts to assault me and I start to advance since he is now hanging out in theback. My war walkers move forward and keep his broken raider squad running. I start to down ravagers.

Bottom of turn #4
He starts to hide and protect what he has left.

Turn #5

Top of turn #5
He has 2 objectives in his deployment zone with a foot warrior squad. I had a chance to kill the warrior squad on the left that are hiding behind the hill with my warp spiders on turn #3, but did not go after them, so they are unkillable. But the other squad on the right side in the building is another thing. I start to shoot them with the war walkers and kill most of them and they stand.

Bottom of turn #5
He stashes all of his surviving raiders behind buildings for a last second objective grab.

Turn #6

Top of turn #6
I am on the 2 objectives in my deployment zone and I want it to stay that way. He can’t tank shock me off of them, but he can pull me off in assault and wipe me out, or contest with his raiders.
He has his Incubi in a raider to the left so I deploy my harlequins in a semi-circle so the guardians can’t get assaulted, but he can move them within 3” to contest if he wins that fight. I shot the last of the squad off of his objective on the back right (I moved a viper there to contest just incase).

Bottom of turn #6
He moves his raiders out and contests my 2 objectives in my deployment zone. He moves a raider to the middle, but is just out of range of the center objective.

End Game
He has his objective in the back left, and I have the center of the board. So we have a tie game but I am way up on kill points giving me the minor win.

I don't think his Eldar list is that fast really. There are only the 4 Vypers, the Jetbikes and the Warp Spiders, which isn't alot in a 2500 point game.

Great game though, too bad on the last turn objective contest. Was it random game length or a set amount of turns?

The 'Ard Boyz missions were all of fixed length (6 turns). Good in some ways (standardization), but bad in others (as demonstrated here).

What? No blessed hull? My 5 bright lances will make him pay! It is good to play in an area that has mostly MEQs and no one plays Eldar.

Scenario:
Modified Kill Points

Troops=1 Kill Point
Dedicated Transports=1 Kill Point
Fast Attack/Elites/Heavy Support=2 Kill Points
HQs that take a HQ slot=5 Kill Points
Other HQ slots and Retinues=1 Kill Point
Demonic Heralds=3 Kill Points
Space Wolf Characters=3 Kill Points

Massacre
A player has 8 more kill points than their opponents Winner gets 20 Points, Loser gets 0 Points

Major Victory
A player has 6 or more Kill Points than their opponent. Winner gets 17 points, loser gets 3 points

Minor Victory
A player has 4 or more Kill Points than their opponent. Winner get 13 points, loser gets 7 points

Tie
A player has 3 or less Kill Points than their opponent, both get 10 points.

Deployment:
Dawn of War

I win the dice roll to go first and I give it to him.

Set Up
He starts with only his plasma cannon squad and his rhino on a hill to the right.

I start with Eldrad the Dire Avengers and a guardian squad on the forest on the left.

Note: The store said that their trees did not arrive in time, so they had the flat terrain represent forest. Later on we had any vehicle in the forest get an obscure role which was a huge mistake since really a forest will never give land raiders a cover save.

Turn #1

Top of turn #1
He moves his army on.

Bottom of turn #1
I move my army on. I keep the war walkers in reserve for some reason to outflank. I get lucky and kill a rhino on the far left.

Turn #2

Top of turn #2
He keeps moving forward, and pops smoke. I need to crack that armor is I am going to kill anything. I get my 2 war walkers and put one on my left deployment zone and shoots at a rhino, and the other one on the right and shoots at his squad on the hill in the back right.

Bottom of turn #2
He starts getting close and I start backing up. My jetbikes go after the empty rhino that is in the lead. I shoot his land raider with 5 bright lances and they do nothing. I move my warp spiders up to kill the squad that is in the wrecked rhino. The reason why I move them far up is that I want him to get out of his land raider and go after them. I want to split up his forces and slow his assault down so that all of his units hit me at once. I hope that they will survive and use withdraw. I move my scouting war walkers to the back left corner to distract them and to shoot at the exposed rhino squad, wiping them out.

Turn #3

Top of turn #3
He hits the line. His Marshall and friends go after my Warp Spiders and wipes them all out. His terminators hit the lines and wipe out a guardian squad.

Bottom of turn #3
My jetbikes shoot his vindicator and knock out its main gun (whew!). My war walkers shoot up his Marshall and his band of merry men and wipe them out. The terminators eat a couple of guardian squads shooting and then get some harlequins and avatars to finish them off.

Left side
I shoot his squad on the hill with my war walkers and they break and hide behind the Doritos bag (the rest are dead). My 2 missile launcher vipers where getting side shots on the vindicator and can’t hit the broad side of a barn.

Turn #4

Top of turn #4
He tank shocks me and I move out of the way.

Bottom of turn #4
Not much left now. I can begin mop up operations.
I shoot the rear of the vindicator with my war walkers and take it out. I shoot the Land Raider with the fusion pistols from the harlequins and immobilize it. My avatar goes after his rhino and fails to kill it. I was hoping to kill it so I could shoot the squad afterwards, but it was not to be.

Turn #5

Top of turn #5
He gets his squad out of the rhino and goes after my guardians and kills then.
You do not see it in any of the pictures, but my war walker’s finish of the squad on the right. He also has a rhino with a full squad that drove down the middle of the board and is now parked between my 2 armies.

Bottom of turn #5
I unload on his marine squad and kill them. Then I continue my assaults and shooting his vehicles. My avatar kills the rhino.

Turn #6

Top of turn #6
He shots a little bit with his chewed up land raiders but can’t do much.

Bottom of turn #6
Another turn of my avatar shooting and then assaulting a land raider, and my vipers shooting 2 bright lances at the other that do nothing.
My harlequins go after a land raider that was sitting around.

So he ends up with 2 chewed up land raider that I hit with all kinds of things and a squad of marines in the middle of my deployment zone.

I end up with 4 more kill points, and a minor victory. If I could have knocked out one of his land raiders I would have had a major victory.

Scenario:

Modified Capture and Control

Place 2 objectives in the center of the table quarters that are not deployment zone.

Massacre
A player has control of more objectives and has more kill points than their opponent. Winner get 20 points, loser gets 0 points

Major Victory
A player has control of more objectives and has an equal number or less kill points than their opponent. Winner get 17 points, loser gets 3 points

Minor Victory
If both players control the same number of objectives and the player that has more kill points than there opponent. Winner get 13 points, loser gets 7 points

Tie
Both players control the same number of objectives, and the same number of kill points. 10 Points

Deployment:
Spearhead

Turn #1

Top of turn #1
He basically splits his army in 2 with each side having a melta squad, a flamer squad, and an exorcist. He has his large foot squad in the middle in a large ruin and his land raider with the grey knights on the right. He is keeping his Grey Knight terminators in reserve.

To start he moves forward and the exorcists shoot at my war walkers taking out 2 in one squad and stunning the last one, and in another squad he takes out another walker and stuns the other 2.

Bottom of turn #1
I did not like getting shot up by his exorcists and I take out the weapon on the one on the left, and stun the one on the right.

Turn #2

Top of turn #2
He moves his land raider forward and hits my line with his Grey Knight squad. With them he assaults my storm guardian squad and my missile launcher vypers and dies not hurt the vypers, but kills a lot of the storm guardians. He deep strikes his Terminators into the open field on the right.

Bottom of turn #2
I hit his grey knights with the harlequins and they begin to kill them. My avatar kills his exorcist with the wailing doom while trying to get closer to the grey knights if he is needed. I shoot up his rhinos on the right and kill one. I shoot everything at the terminators and get them down to the brother captain who ate 2 bright lances and a lot of other shooting and is still standing there.

Turn #3

Top of turn #3
The SoB squad on the right with a blown up rhino starts to walk to the objective behind the terminators. His last terminator hits my guardians and whiffs and only kills a couple.

Bottom of turn #3
Well, things are going ok, and I need to make a plan. I can shoot everything on the left off of the table, and just walk onto the objective uncontested. He still has a lot of units on the right that will need to clear out with the hammer of my army. So I need to move my scoring units up to the objective on the left, and the killy units to the right. The large SoB squad does not have enough time to make it to the other objective, so that is taken out of the equation. So I need to kill 2 SoB squads on the left and 2 Sob Squads on the right.

I move up a Guardian squad and the Dire Avengers into the ruins. I doom the Terminator Brother-Captain and my mighty guardians do 3 wounds to him and clubbed him to death! (Whew, they guy could have been trouble beating up on poor guardians!). I shoot the crap out of the SoB squad on the objective on the left and reduce it to 2 models.

Left Side

I make a mistake and turbo-boost my bike squad to the right to be in a position to take the objective in the later rounds, and everything shuffles to the left to start killing. While doing that I shoot the crap out of the land raider and don’t do much.

Right Side

Turn #4

Top of turn #4
He moves forward with his rhino and flamers my Jetbikes and rapid fires them so they are down to the Warlock who runs for it. He moves his rhino to block in the Harlequins and the Avatar from advancing by forming a wall with the land raider. He shoots the large SoB squad and his exorcist at the fortuned Avatar and does 2 wounds to it. His SoB Squad on the left rapid fires my Dire Avenger squad down to one model.

Bottom of turn #4
I unload on the SoB squad on the left with my war walkers and just about everything else, and he is left with one Sister near the objective.

Left Side

On the right side my Warp Spiders go after the SoB squad that flamed my Jetbikes and they wipe them out. My Harlequins and my Avatar attack his Land Raider to clear it out of the way. I finally kill it, but it was because I shot off all of its weapons and immobilized it.

Right Side

We run out of time and the game is called.

I have no objectives and he holds both of them and I am massacred.

Funny, I did not feel like I was massacred, and in fact I felt like I was massacring him. If the game was going for just one more turn I could have shot the last SoB on the left and moved a scoring unit on it, and my warp spiders could have assaulted and at least contested the objective on the right.

So with that I am taken out of the running. The guy I beat in round #1 ended up in 3rd place so I could have at least make the semi-finals with a win in game #3. So this is the first year I will be sitting out the semi-finals.

Guh, slowballed! Pains me to read it. Still, good showing for the Eldar, kicked some trash.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Templars lost out in 5th for sure, especially as the newer Marine codicies get everything cheaper. A BA army can do everything the templars can do, but better.

Dante + Corbulo can grant the Furious Charge and Preferred Enemy.

Spamming dual AC termie squads can't be replicated, but you still have very few bodies, don't get apothecaries and don't count as troops as Deathwing would.

I'm pretty sure 9 times out of 10, I'd rape that army.

He won the semi's due to dice. Not skilled play.. He gave my army a pasting due completely to EXTREMELY lucky dice, and horrible, horrible dice on my part. And he still only barely beat me.

The last game in semi's was random game length. If it ended on 5, I won. If it ended on 6, it was a tie and if it ended on 7 he won (barely). Which is sad considering his army was largely intact, and due to the completely open board (no cover at all) I had very little left by the end of the game. It shouldn't take anyone 7 turns of extreme good luck to barely win a game, which tells me it was poor playing and a tame list.

That being said, I could have also had him disqualified for several different reasons:
1. Played with proxies, fantasy witches as wytches. Fantasy Lords as DE hero's (not converted at all and still on square bases). There is a difference between counts-as and outright proxies.
2. Army wasn't fully assembled. (several raiders/ravagers/jetbikes missing all their weaponry)
3. Several models were on incorrect bases (witches, characters. bikes didnt even have bases)
4. "table-talk" (having his wife along to do his book-keeping for him)

That being said, I didn't want to take over-all due to being petty and having him DQ'ed to forever be "that guy" locally... But at the same time, I'm not going to pat his lucky dice on the back. As its been said, its a weak list. It proves my point though, 'Ard boyz doesn't factor skill in too much. Just take a huge army and get lucky with your match ups/tables/dice. I think if the points were lower like 1500/1750 we'd be seeing more skill and less "noob luck".

Oh and I took over-all round one with a tame Dark Angels army just because I could, you were at the same tourney at Empire with your wolves. For the semi's I used my Vulkan marines.. I'm convinced poor dice aside, he wouldn't have a prayer against me the majority of the time.

Wow. Still bitter over a loss?????

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
