Wow. I'm not really a fan of scratch-built models usually but hell, these are better than the GW DEff Dreads!!! And I bet easier to put together

Current Armies:

Warmachine:
Shae Pirate's Life 50
Durgen attrition 50

WH40K:
Orks (5,000 pt Apoc Kan Wall, 1850 Bikerz)
Grey Knights (1850 Crowe Purifiers, 2500 'Ard Boyz Draigo)
Sisters of Battle (Seraphim spam)

WHFB:

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

Excellent work, though I think they need a little bulking up around the feet, it looks a little bi plain when compared to the effort you put in on the rest of the models.

Its easy to build them in mass. Economy of scale. I sat down, figured out a basic design for each of the major components, and made scale drawings. Then I decided where I could encorporate alterations to the primary body work. Then I built things in a way which prompted randomness to occur. All cutting, no measurement... that sort of thing

In doing body work, especially the rivets: mass production is everything. I have my 4 primary chasis squares, and I just drill lines for the rivets. Then sit down and painstakingly rivet them all.

It makes the jobs a lot more boring to go through, but ultimately much faster. Critical for something, like my methodology of riveting, which requires basically no thought

I'll get to work painting soon. Thats where I hope to break the boundary between good and fething great. Currently considering: lots of decals, flames, rust, red, black, checkz, white, lightening bolts... that sorta thing.

We'll see. Summer is almost gone, and when its done: must finish degree in molecular genetics. No time for paint.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And - painful admission. I did the feet at the very end. I had the posts for the legs, and the models totally assembled, and I was just exhausted and kinda lazy.

I think I'll take a breather and then tackle it.
Other criticism?

Considering they are only made from plasticard and some metal rod, with some paint and they will look better than the standard deffdread!

Great work!

Those are lovely! The only thing I could possibly suggest is that you put some more dynamics into the buzzsaws on the first one. (like teeth, damage,..)

yeah, actually: thats all coming out in the paint job.

I hate how the GW buzz saw is totally static. Its not buzzin or sawin anyfing when its sittin still!

Top notch scratchbuilds, looking forward to seeing these painted.

Out of curiosity, how much did they cost to make? (bearing in mind a GW Deff Dread is £30+)

again: economy of scale. I did keep rough track.

I estimate that if I bought all the materials to build a single dread, it would cost me around 30 dollars canadian.

However at the end of building it you'd be left with a lot of surplus.

Building 4 dreads probably cost me about 40 dollars.

When all is said and done I think I will have constructed 4 dreadz and 9 killa kans for well under 60 dollars.

The cost could, concievably, ballon really easily if you were wasteful with your plasticard. Its important to be precise and frugal, and always "do some figuerins" of how much you'll need, and how that translates into packages.

Just slightly more than a single GW metal dread.

However this does not factor into time. Building 4 of em, and the killa kans I'm building now, will probably end up taking almost 100 man hours.

Those are freaking awesome! Makes me want to learn how to scratch build . . . but knowing me I would get half way through building the first thing and then get bored . . . the best I do is using a small hole punch to make rivets for things . . . works well, and and can really add character to things.

Can't wait to see the Killa Kans now . . . Burn 'em, Chop 'em, Stomp 'em!!!
