Where did you get this idea from? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using coffee grounds and tea leaves as basing material. Minis that smell like Starbucks... You might be on to something here.

That is a great idea!
Tea bag leaves are very popular - not sure about coffee, though.
I would suggest painting the bases with a mottled green and brown and then gluing this material on top. You could then use a bit of paint to color them up.
My concern would be that the coffee will leak a black-brown liquid (that is, coffee . . .) when it gets wet. Tea bags are generally better.
But, use of teabags is a tried and tested method. Always very good. As I say; coffee . . . . not so sure.

If you get a dry sunny day, you can spread the coffee out and let it dry out in the sun, and the smell will eventually go away, however eventually may take a long time. You can try boiling the coffee or letting it soak in a big bucket for a few days, it might help the actual "coffee" smell seep out a little faster, i don't know if it will work, but it might be worth a shot.

If you looking for a "free" basing material. raid your local sandbox. wash it with warm soapy water (animals like to use outdoor sandbox for their waste storage ), let it dry. when you get ready to put it on your base mix it with elmers glue and little water into a paste and then put it onto you base. this can be done before you put the model onto the base and then glue the model onto the mix after it has dried or you can put it on the base after the model has been put onto the base.
Even better is if you have the sand "art" kits. the kind that has colored sand in glass bottle. it is a finer sand then the kind used for play grounds and doesn't have to be washed.

Though I encourage you to expperiment with this current mix, I would definately suggest stealing some sand/dirt/gravel from your yard.
What I've been using is different size bags of bassalt that I found at Hobby Lobby. Its cheap and practiaclly lasts foevever. It als makes great rubble for terrain.

I got the impression from your first post you were using drugs for basing .
If you put some sort of sealer on your miniatures, that should help with the smell and the mold. You might want to do an extra coat around the base. Like other people have said, there's plenty of cheap options for basing materials. The hardest part is keeping your eyes open for them. I bought a big bag of sand at a do it yourself store for three USD and it was heavier than I could comfortably carry out to my car, but I doubt I'll run out of sand anytime in the next three years. There's also sprue rocks. If you can cut your sprues up into tiny pieces, just treat them like a larger basing material, make sure to paint them too though. I also cut up a beer bottle cap and am going to try to use it on a base somehow.

Well these are the bases (there actually a little darker) they have a good coverage and the cofee grounds fill the empty areas
I put some water effects to try to make it look like ti rained (didnt really work)
i need to clean up the edges a little

RE: Smell.
Put your basing on before you prime the figure. Prime figure and basing materials together. This will create a stronger bond between baseing and base as well as lock the smell in. Paint it whatever color you want to for perfect matching with your army theme.
The again, why cover up that lovely aroma?????
hmm.. second though, cover it up.. Being face down on the table sniffing your figures for the coffee smell at 2 am would look BAD... lol.

Paint shouldn't turn the coffee grounds into coffee, I painted a fish feeder treasure chest and it stayed in one piece. It shouldn't become moldy either if you seal the base well enough with paint or glue. Great idea, I would have never thought of this!
