Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

I've recently picked up this model on the cheap:

My intention is an experiment: strip, convert and paint him up, and then see what he will fetch at auction.

My question is: what would space wolf (and non-space wolf) players like to see done to him? I'd appreciate any and all suggestions for:
  • Paintjob
  • Weapons loadout
  • The type of HQ that he should be
  • Characterful details you'd like to see

  • I'll probably ditch the JP, unless there is a compelling reason to keep it.

So, what do you guys think?

Magnetisation is always a good way to go for an auction item re weapon loadouts.

A good idea, though I was hoping to be able to work with the model I have I like the idea of a frost axe, but I instead of a chain-weapon, would sculpting the axe-blade to make it look like it was literally made of 'ice' be interesting? If I were to include a wolf, would it need to be based on the same base as his, or separately?

Alex Kolodotschko wrote:Magnetisation is always a good way to go for an auction item re weapon loadouts.
A good thought - I wasn't really intending to do multiple sets of weapons for this one - it would push my parts cost higher than I'd like for this experiment (planning to start the auction at about AU$25), but its worth noting if I it works out and I do this again.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep 'em coming!

the "actual" ice axe is a great idea ond you could put him on the new termie base with the wolf and it should fit ok

though technically the wolf could have a seperate base

I did some research into various Norse/viking weaponry and patterns for my upcoming Space Wolves force and found this site to be quite useful

I think Double headed battle axes would really suit wolves

I'd like to see what a wolfs head w/ its mouth open would look like with the blade being between the upper and lower jaw in an ice blue.... or at least something like this

    Remove that jump pack! NAO!

Apparently the space wolves don't really like the air. No doubt pissed off Zeus in their time.

Otherwise, I think axe design D or F would be fine. F is cooler though.

Opinion certainly is split! I do like the traditionally-styled Norse axes a lot, and I also came to like the idea of combining it with a wolf's head - I've tried both a wolf skull as well as a wolf motif. I also liked the idea of an ice scythe, though that's not as appropriate - I just thought It would look cool!

I'm leaning towards either K or N versions personally - maybe worked up a little differently, maybe with a blade shape like F or I from the last set of drawings? If anyone has some suggestions, post them and I'll try sketching them out.

@Scalp: I had a quick go at your suggestion, but couldn't make it look good - I'll give it another go tomorrow though, because I think I have new idea.

Also, can anyone suggest a good source for a wolf? I'd like to model him with one if possible but all the WHFB wolves I've looked at would be far too large and dwarf the model!

All those sketches look great! I'm leaning towards K on this one, have you thought about a chain axe but substituting the saw teeth for wolf teeth> not sure of how it would be made but would look cool.

    I like K a lot.

Thanks for the guidance all - I've done a whole bunch of variations on the theme - trying to keep the spirit of the ones that have been popular:

And I think I worked out what was bugging me about the design. I do really like the idea of the frost axe being a literal chunk of ice - it seems very saga-worthy to me - the space wolf defeating his enemies with ice from the very heart of Fenris kind of thing.

However, just mounting it onto a shaft seems too... magical to me - something that would be more at home in WHFB. Everything in 40k has some kind of pseudoscience to back it up, so I'm thinking of taking a slightly different approach to my original thought. I sketched up R (initially based on looking at the old SW plastic axe) to this end - the idea is that the ice is carefully hand-carved from the hardest and most ancient glaciers on Fenris, then seated in specially designed machine which keeps it frozen even on the hottest desert planet - giving me the opportunity to add nice long hosepipes, winding around the haft of the axe leading to a tank or generator on the model somewhere.

What do you guys think of this new tack? I'm still tempted to work on adding the wolf-motif or skull into it somewhere, but I think this grounds it a bit more in the 'reality' of the 40k universe.

I quite like the Idea of a generator powering the axe, it seems quite a clever Idea.
Why not try combining R with U?
the curved blade shape of U (and the wolf) combined with the techy bits of R?

I agree on removing the JP. Maybe sculpt a Fur-lined cape on instead?
