Gwar!'s Wondificent Army Rosters (Now with 33% more Randomness)
Part 1: Smallest Army by Model Count)
Hello and welcome to the first instalment of Gwar!'s Wondificent Army Rosters (GWAR), updated whenever I can be arsed to do so.
What in the name of the Allfather is the GWAR?
The GWAR are a series of Army roster lists exploring the extremes of Army Rosters (Smallest, Largest, Cheapest etc. etc.). I am making these lists merely because I can and because I enjoy knowing these things for the sake of knowing them. It is also interesting to see the large variances in codex design and for seeing how the older codices fare again the newer ones.
Why in Russ' name should I read this crap?
Well, because it is interesting. It's mostly knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Read it or don't, I'm not gonna mind (Much -Cries-)
Where can I send suggestions/fanmail/hatemail/Pandas/licorice?
Just shoot me an e-mail or catch me on Skype. Any and all criticism is welcome
And Now for Something Completely Different (That is, Clear Rules and Iron Clad Clarifications)
1) This list is based of physical model count. It does not have criteria on Points,
FoC Slots or
IRL Cash Price (those are for later lists).
2) Swarm Bases count as 1 Model for the Purposes of these lists (For example, a Ripper Swarm of 3 Bases counts as 3 Models).
3) While I will be posting the total points costs of the rosters, I will not be posting the individual points costs or (in general) the equipment of units. This is to prevent Games Workshop Attack Pandas from, well, attacking.
4) For the sake of completeness, the rosters will contain not one total points cost, but two. The first will be the Lowest Points possible points cost (No Upgrades or the Cheapest Mandatory Upgrades/Wargear. This will be referred to forthwith as "Low End") and the Highest (Most Expensive Weapons and Wargear Combination/Maxed out Points cost. This will be referred forthwith as "High End").
5) Similarly, where there is a tie for the lowest Number of models for a slot (Most often in the Case of
HQ's) I will use the Cheapest Option with the No/Cheapest Mandatory Upgrades/Wargear for the Low End Roster, while using the Most Expensive Weapons and Wargear Combination/Maxed out Points cost in the High End Roster.
6) Where an choice of unit would result in a cheaper unit, but more models, the more expensive, less models option is chosen, even for the Low End Roster.
7) For the Purposes of these lists, all points level restrictions on legacy codex Special Characters have been lifted.
8) In addition to the above basic rules, any army specific notes I feel need to be added will be placed just after the heading of each roster.
9) Please
PM me to let me know of any mistakes that have crept in, otherwise I will set my Reprogrammed Games Workshop Attack Bamboo on you! You know who you are!
10) In order to maintain a level of consistency, I shall be making lists only for the "Current" Codices. However, in the cases of codices that make more than one sort of army, in which case I will post rosters for a "Mixed" full codex army, and a "Variant" List army. For example, Dark Angels can make a Mixed Dark Angel force, a Pure Ravenwing Force or a Pure Deathwing Force. Where necessary the definitions for the “Variant” army will be detailed in the preceding roster notes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As this is the first in the Series, please bear with me as we go through teething problems like figuring out the best way to display it all. If you have any suggestions, ideas or even hatemail, send me a PM. Though if you send me hatemail I'll set the Bamboo on you!
The list of Rosters to be included in the GWAR series are:
Codex: Black Templars
Codex: Blood Angels

[A word on the formatting
In order to reduce the amount of repeated data, it is necessary to utilise two different formats for the rosters.
The first one consists of the Low End Roster with the points cost at the end, followed by the High End Roster with the points cost at the end. This is the format used when any unit differs between the two rosters (Most commonly in the case of
HQ units).
The second consists of a single roster, with both the Low End and the High End points costs placed together that the end. This is the format used when the models do not change between the Low End and High End rosters.
OK Gwar!, I'll bite! What armies are you doing?
In order to maintain a level of consistency, I shall be making lists only for the "Current" and “Official” Codices (So no
BoLS Armies and no 3rd edition Tau lists for example).
This is beginning to sound interesting. Will you be updating these or are you going to give them the Dark Eldar treatment?
Unlike
GW, I care about making sure things stay current. As such, I will try and keep the lists updated as codices are released and with each new list, will go back and amend minor formatting changes and definition changes as needed.
So, without further ado, lets get this started!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
In joint 21st place are:
Necrons and Witch Hunters (Pure Adepta Sororitas)!
Well, here we are, with the losers. Each of these codices are, of course, ancient 3rd edition ones and have a minimum limit of 10 on their only Troops Units, resulting is a Minimum Model Count of Twenty One Models.
Hows that for prefect Placement! Armies that need 21 models coming in Joint 21st place.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Necrons
Low End Roster:
HQ: Necron Lord
Troops: Two 10 Necron Warrior Squads
Points: 460
High End Roster:
HQ: Nightbringer
Troops: Two 10 Necron Warrior Squads
Points: 760
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Witch Hunters (Pure Adepta Sororitas):
Low End Roster:
HQ: Palatine
Troops: Two 10 Strong Battle Sisters Squads
Points: 255
High End Roster:
HQ: Saint Celestine, Hieromartyr of the Palatine Crusade
Troops: Two 10 Strong Battle Sisters Squads
Points: 837
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
In 20th place it's:
The Imperial Guard!
Yes, the Imperial Guard languish in second to last place, all on their lonesome with a rather unique nineteen model minimum. The reason for this oddness is because of the way Heavy Weapon Teams are represented now. Whereas before it was 2 models, now it is only the one, resulting in Two 9 Man Squads plus and
HQ Character. How very interesting!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Imperial Guard
Low End Roster:
HQ: Lord Commissar (or Primaris Psyker)
Troops: Two Veteran Squads with 7 Veterans, a Veteran Sergeant and a Veteran Weapons Team
Points: 220
High End Roster:
HQ: Commissar Yarrick
Troops:
Veteran Squad with 7 Veterans, a Veteran Weapons Team and Sergeant Baston
Veteran Squad with 7 Veterans, a Veteran Weapons Team and Gunnery Sergeant Harker
Points: 740
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
And all on their lonesome at 19th is:
The T'au Empire (Farsight Enclaves)!
Ah yes, the T'au, loved by few, reviled by many, including every Necron, Inquisition and Dark Eldar player in the world, although not without a hint of bitter-sweet joy, as the update to 5th edition hit T'au relatively hard. With the second Codex, Farsight admittedly got a bit of a buff, but remains a paradoxical mystery, emphasising close combat while being part of the most non-close combat craving list in the game. In any case, the Farsight Enclaves list resides here, in 19th place, with an also unique minimum of 14 Models. This is because you are required to take at least one elite Crisis Battlesuit squad. How very interesting (again)!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Tau Empire (Farsight Enclaves)
Note: While Commander Farsight technically cannot fulfil the 1+ Commander requirement, the
GW FAQ states that he may, so for the purposes of these lists, he shall fulfil this requirement. Furthermore, the Hard-Wired Drone controller has not been included in the High End Roster, as it forces additional models to be taken.
HQ: Commander Farsight
Elites: 1 Crisis Battlesuit
Troops: Two 6 Tau Fire Warrior Squads
Points: Low – 327, High – 578
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Welcome to 16th place. Sharing the honour of this award goes to:
The Dark Eldar and The Tau Empire (Sept Worlds)!
Yes indeed, as we get towards the middle numbers more and more armies will be sharing places I promise you that! Nothing really extraordinary about these armies, other than they have 6 Model Minimums for their troops rather than the usual 5 or 10, resulting in a 13 model minimum army. Ok, Ok! Dark Eldar technically have a minimum of 5, they have to buy a transport as well.
So without further ado, the two rosters for your viewing pleasure:
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dark Eldar (Kabal)
Note: For the purposes of these lists, the Dark Eldar “Kabal” Army is defined as a Dark Eldar Army that does not have a Wyche Lord leading it. Furthermore, while the Fluff behind Asdrubael Vect indicates it consists of him and his retinue, it is one model for game purposes, so is thus included in the High End Roster.
Low End Roster:
HQ: One Haemonculus
Troops: Two 5 Eldar Raider Squads with Raider
Points: 215
High End Roster:
HQ: Asdrubael Vect
Troops: Two 5 Eldar Raider Squads with Raider
Points: 939
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Tau Empire (Sept Worlds)
Note: Neither Aun'Va nor Shadowsun are eligible for this roster as they force you to take additional Models. Furthermore, the Hard-Wired Drone controller has not been included in the High End Roster, as it forces additional models to be taken.
Low End Roster:
HQ: Shas'
el
Troops: Two 6 Tau Fire Warrior Squads
Points: 182
High End Roster:
HQ: Shas'o
Troops: Two 6 Tau Fire Warrior Squads
Points: 463
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
And with the easy bit done, allow me to welcome to... joint 6th place, shared by no less than nine different Armies, namely Black Templars, Chaos Space Marines, Dæmonhunters (Mixed), Dæmonhunters (Pure Grey Knights), Dark Angels (Mixed), Dark Angels (Pure Deathwing), Dark Eldar (Wyche Cult), Space Marines and finaly Witch Hunters (Mixed). Yes, as it turns out, a lot of armies have five models as the minimum for their Troops units. I would normally put something insightful here, about how interesting the armies are or some observation about them, but I don't want to die of old age before I finish, so without any further delay, here are the nine armies that consist of a minimum of eleven models.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Black Templars
Note: Being Forced to take an Emperors Champion only at the 750 Points mark allows the Black Templars to get away with only the 1
HQ needed and not take an Emperors champion at all!
Low End Roster:
HQ: Castellan
Troops: Two 5 Man Crusader Squads
Points: 255
High End Roster:
HQ: Black Templars Chaplain
Troops: Two 5 Man Crusader Squads
Points: 540
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Chaos Space Marines
Note: While one could argue that the lower points limit is 220, I remind you that Summoned Lesser Daemons cannot count as the Mandatory 2 Troops, thus we defer to the humble vanilla Chaos Space Marine.
Low End Roster:
HQ: Chaos Lord
Troops: Two 5 Man Chaos Space Marine Squads
Points: 240
High End Roster:
HQ: Abaddon the Despoiler (or a fully upgraded Power Armoured Chaos Sorcerer)
Troops: Two 5 Man Plague Marine Squads
Points: 715
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dæmonhunters (Mixed)
Low End Roster:
HQ: Grey Knight Brother Captain
Troops: Two 5 Man Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Squads
Points: 161
High End Roster:
HQ: Grey Knight Grand Master
Troops: Two 5 Man Grey Knights Squads
Points: 925
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dæmonhunters (Pure Grey Knights)
Note: Due to the nature of the Dæmonhunters codex, the High End Roster for a Pure Grey Knights army is the exact same as the above “Mixed” army. However the Low End Cost (due to using Grey Knights rather than Stormtroopers) is different.
Low End Roster:
HQ: Grey Knight Brother Captain
Troops: Two 5 Man Grey Knights Squads
Points: 361
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dark Angels (Battle Company)
Note: For the purposes of these lists, the Dark Angels “Battle Company” is defined as a Mixed Full Codex Dark Angel Army
Low End Roster:
HQ: Chaplain (or Company Master)
Troops: Two 5 Man Tactical Squads
Points: 280
High End Roster:
HQ: Azrael, Supreme Grand Master
Troops: Two 5 Man Tactical Squads
Points: 525
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dark Angels (Deathwing)
Note: For the purposes of these lists, the Dark Angels “Deathwing” Army is defined as a Dark Angel Army with Belial, Master of the Deathwing and only Deathwing Terminator Squads as Troop Choices.
HQ: Belial, Master of the Deathwing
Troops: Two 5 Man Deathwing Terminator Squad
Points: Low – 560, High – 725
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Dark Eldar (Wyche Cult)
Note: For the purposes of these lists, the Dark Eldar “Wyche Cult” Army is defined as a Dark Eldar Army with a Wyche Lord or Lelith Hesperax as an
HQ Choice, and then following the amended Force Organisation Chart for such an army.
Low End Roster:
HQ: Wych Dracite
Troops: Two 5 Eldar Wych Squads
Points: 165
High End Roster:
HQ: Wych Archite
Troops: Two 5 Eldar Wych Squads
Points: 711
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Space Marines
Low End Roster:
HQ: Space Marine Captain (or Librarian (or Chaplain (or Master of The Forge)))
Troops: Two 5 Man Scout Squads
Points: 250
High End Roster:
HQ: Captain on a Space Marine Bike
Troops: Two 4 Man Space Marine Bike squads with an Attack Bike each.
Points: 700
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Codex: Witch Hunters (Mixed)
Note: Due to the identical points costs for Adeptus Arbites Squads and Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Squads, it is possible to take one of each, rather than the two of only one as it might be construed below. Furthermore, while the Fluff behind Inquisitor Lord Karamazov indicates it consists of him and his retinue, it is one model for game purposes, so is thus included in the High End Roster.
Low End Roster:
HQ: Palatine
Troops:
Two 5 Man Adeptus Arbites Squads / Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Squads
Points: 135
High End Roster:
HQ: Inquisitor Lord Karamazov
Troops: Two 5 Man Adeptus Arbites Squads / Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Squads
Points: 619
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
So, that was a nice long read wasn't it! Don't worry, only a few more armies to go, and speaking of which, lets meet six of them now! That's right, with a minimum of just 7 models are Blood Angels, Chaos Dæmons, Dark Angels (Pure Ravenwing), Eldar, Space Wolves and Tyranids, who all share the joy of being 2nd place. Who has come out on top? If you haven't worked it out yet,
Start Paying Attention!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Blood Angels
HQ: Astorath the Grim

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

And so it is written in the Weave that all things must come to an end. Well, except Taxes. Death will be overcome, but the government will always be corrupt

So as we come to the final army, yes you guessed it, it's Orks, strutting about in 1st place as the King of the Small Armies.
“But wait!” I hear you cry “Orks are supposed to be a Hoard Army!” Yes, they are supposed to be, however thanks to the Avatar of the Emperor that is Phil Kelly, Orks are able to take an army of a Whopping FOUR models! Now, I will admit, it has no scoring units, and you will in all likelihood never win a single game with it, but who cares about playability! We just know it can be done! So, with my thanks for reading through this most likely awful to read article, I present to you the current army with the smallest possible number of models in Warhammer
40k:
DA MEK ORKZ!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
