Nothing earth shattering, but a randomly updated Blog to chart the progress of my Eldar Army - while very much spreading my limited free time thin with the Legion, Crescent Guard, Hulk and what ever... I'm all over the place these days, but still want to somehow contribute to this fine board.

It was fluid beauty, like ethereal quicksilver, a silent dance of death

The advent of the Wolf has gotten me somewhat excited. It all started gaming wise with two small armies I had painted, of space wolves and eldar, something like 15+ years ago. I’ve always wanted an Eldar army and tried to find the opportunity to do one, but the fact the new ranges have still been metal heavy and I experienced a real leap of approach during the previous try meant it ended in a stalemate.

This friday I bumped into base color painted fire dragons and the sight of my unfinished army and decided it’s time to try again. I picked up the Eldar dex and what is still the coolest ever GW codex cover injected so much inspiration that I soon had some really exciting plans. I really also needed a brake from the ambitions and just to concentrate on hobby. Coupled with how real life things are - I want to finish something before things get too hectic and then enjoy gaming and just occasionally adding or working on eternal things like the Legion.

I will be soon playing against two of the best 5th edition armies, Lash Princed Slaanesh (gurk - a list I've faced since the dex)LR spam and variations of the Space Wolf kind from Northern and Hammer. To work on my Crescent Guard would lead into boring as hell games, but TWAR and now Eldar, and gradually Legion will be a different matter all together - and set a great storyline for the Rhisienne Campaign we have been planning.

Once I’ve finished the lot, I will retouch all the basing with a new formula I’ve been trying to create a lush, warm, exodite world feeling earth...

Here’s a list I’m building and painting towards, and I am actually quite far into it. I’m happy with all the units I’ve finished except the Dire Avengers, for which I want to later do a blue version of the fire dragon scheme and technique. I have a pretty cool idea for the solitaire - simple and in character And once the list is done, I already have a WL built and want to add the FW Avatar.

AND here are the fire dragons - which I didn’t manage to photograph too well, but as this is a gaming army on a schedule, not a GD entry, I don’t fething care

and here are the rest of the finished stuff you've already seen. I've added a little chipping and very restrained weathering on all the units since taking these pics.

and finally here's a pic of the entire group thus far, quite well into the project, with two falcons, two characters and harlies to build. - NOTE the refinished basing done with MIG pigments, of whch I need to show close ups in due time I paint a model worthy of closer inspection.

Exquisite. The calligraphy on the robes and banners is nicely understated. And the colors really glow.

The Eldar need and deserve craft in the execution. They're an army that can look very pretty, or very silly. Your characteristically meticulous and soulful brushwork really evokes this race's ancient elegance and deadly grace.

Thanks folks, to quote my friend Grey Death

I really enjoy going back to 'just painting' once in a while. It's how I've gone about painting my orks when I do the occasional boy ^_^. It feels good to just let loose and 'just paint' without worrying about execution and technique.

That's basically the plan and philosophy for this project.

I liked the original bases already as they were so I can't wait to see the new and improved ones!

This is far beyond a gaming army!

The yellows are very strong, however, my one criticism would be that they lack depth and contrast in the shading. Particularly in the deep crevices, I'd like to see some deep orangey browns to accentuate the detail. The highlights are wonderfully smooth, but on figures like the exarch, a lot of the "core" of the mini just seems to be lost in that bright yellow.

That criticism aside, I really like how they work as a group. The fire dragons in particular are my favourites, those guys literally look like they are smouldering!

Woot - Im a big fan of the bright colors and I especially like the way it looks together atm. The dire avengers as well as the dragons provide a great contrast to that very shiny yellow (which I love) while still looking like a part of the overall army (yellow and white feathers, yellow tabards etc). Diverse, yet coherent.

Im glad you picked this up again

The Rangers have much win, that colouration is amazing and for some unknown reason puts me in mind of the colour palate of artist Brian Froud.

Does this mean that the TWAR will play a role in the campaign? Very curious see more on those!

I created something quite unnerving! The Solitaire (doomed Harlequin who takes on the role of Slaanesh!).

I said I would just mostly paint, but the characters are different - I've always been inspired by the concept of the Solitaire (even more so now there is no model and no rules) and Yriel's rules fit so perfectly. I ripped apart the Harlequin troupe leader and converted and sculpted him into one of the most unnervingly disturbing Eldar models - the arch nemesis incarnate.

If I get the planned ambitious "one eye scheme" right - purple hued checks and glazes, into smokey darkness of the capes, with one eye piercingly glowing yellow sickly light. A lot of nice detail to pick up with paint.

Some models just capture a piece of the 40k fabric in a way that hasn't been frequently used or examined - this one has potential. What do you think?

I think I agree. I like the role of the solitaire in the fluff, so in my eyes its a real challenge to get him right. I think the work youve done modelling wise is heading in the right direction, but the paintjob will be what really sets him off (as in merging slannesh with harli schemes). I like the "eye" idea and it will be interesting to see your imagination come to life. I think the biggest challenge will be finding the right ratio between harlequin and slannesh colors. Afterall, painting it all in purples/pinks would take away from the harlequin character.

It's funny that your sculpting of hair is more detailed than the actual models hair, would you be re-sculpting all of it?
