I started this project almost 2 years ago, the idea was to create an army filled with demonic machines and demon princes.
The ruleset I intended to use (and according to whom, I have subsequently designed most of the models), was codex tyranids.
Or more specifically: a 4th edition choirzilla list.

After taking an ~18 month break from wargaming (I got hooked on some stupid online game ), I just got back into wargaming and I want to finish what I started.
By now the army has been nerfed and it will probably be totally invalidated in a few months, but frankly: I could care less, the friends I game with are pretty relaxed and probably won't object, for every other game: There's always apocalypse ("geez, those datasheets sure look awfully familiar...").

I'll stop ranting now and get on with the important part: the models and their pictures
The progress I made before my break can be seen in a very, very old thread here.

Edit: uploaded a short movie that the wife made of the army (beware the file is ~53MB): http://members.home.nl/mehoetjes/khorne/VCLP1001.MOV

That looks quite impressive mate. I like the idea behind it. Keep it up! Im anxtious to see it all painted...

Creative ideas coupled with amazing models. Just a little problem... the idea of actually playing them as tyranids! :p

Fantastic work on the "hive tyrant"... the army shot also looks pretty damn cool.

Congrats!

Cheers,

Jack.

Thanks for the replies!

@Cilithan:
Getting it all painted will take some time, to ensure a coherent paintscheme I'd like to paint everything simultaniously, which means building all the models first.
For now that means building 3 more 'genestealers', 2 'tyrant guard', finishing the last 'ravener' (the centaur-like models) and building a lot of bases (most of them with skull piles and wound markers). After that it's time to review all the models again, change whatever I'm unhappy with, fill gaps, and start detailing/adding chaos bling.

OT: I just noticed we're both living in Groningen, if you and/or your gaming group don't mind playing against an army that's still wip, please shoot me a PM

@Blightdrone:

Yeah, playing them as tyranids is one of the 'issues' with this army, the other ones being model and base size.
Everything is way too big (for example: the hive tyrant stands 5.5 inches tall) and mounted on the wrong base size:
genestealers/termagaunts on 40mm bases, zoanthropes/raveners/tyrant guard on 60mm bases and tyrants/fexes on CD's.

To be honest, it's my own fault that I'll be ending up with an army suited only for friendly games and apocalypse (while base and model sizes weren't a problem in 4th edition, the 'counts as' nature of the army always made it possibly confusing for an opponent).

Back on topic, the more I look at the models and pictures, the more I realize there are some things I don't like:

1. The ungor shields on the hips of the first dakkafex look like tacked on fantasy shields..
2. To a lesser extent this is also true for the shield on top of the hive tyrant's twin linked devourer (the quad bolter servo arm, btw: atm the arm itself just looks too plain).
3. The head of dakkafex 3.
4. The pose of the far right genestealer.
5. The head of the sniperfexes: while I love the neck and cybernetics, the krieger krash head just looks too human.
6. The banner pole of the synapse zoanthrope is way too plain and his fist doesn't clench it convincingly.

The solutions I've come up with so far are:

1. Replace the shields with either more sci-fi like varients or with muscle like material (to emphasize the infested nature of the dakkafexes).
2. Smooth out the wooden structure of the shield with greenstuff and add more pistons/tubes/chains to the servo-arm.
3. This is a hard one:
I don't have another bloodthirster head (which I used for dakkafex 1), I've tried fleshhound and the other new chaos spawn heads heads but those just don't work at all
The only head that I have in ample supply is the top of the beastman banner pole (used for dakkafex 2 and one of the zoanthropes) and while I like it, I am worried about a lack of variation.
4. Rip off his chainaxe arm and replace it with a more dynamically posed one.
5. See 3.
6. Add chains hanging from the hooks on his banner and wind them down the banner pole (going through the fingers where needed to make it look like a more firm grip).

I fully realize that this list is only the tip of the iceberg and that one person can't hope to see as much a the whole of dakka, so you see anything else that seems off/ think of a better solution/etc. , please post it

BTW: the skull on the front left of the army is supposed to become an objective marker, does anyone have an idea on how to model the broken neckjoint of a titan?

Thanks,

Eelco.

Great looking stuff!

I would not worry too much about base sizes, it's not a big deal deal and your models are hardly modelled to an advantage in any case, try getting some cover saves with these :-). As long as models look like what they are supposed to do (like your gaunts) I don't see a problem.
Are you set on codex Tyrranids, possibly Chaos Daemons is also an option?

Thanks

No, I'm not set to using the rules in codex tyranids to represent them, but it probably is the least confusing choice.
The weapon loadout and look of the different models were chosen according to that codex (so that an autocannon is always a venom cannon, multiple bolters/heavy bolters count as devourers, a spiky collar consistently represents psychic scream, the number of removable trophy poles on the base are equal to the number of wounds minus one, etc.).

But if I can use codex Chaos daemons without making things unneccesarily complicated and confusing for my opponents, you certainly won't hear me complaining ,
it definately fits better with the overall look, theme and feel of the army.

I probably hadn't thought it through enough. I now realise that most of your models have big guns which is something you normally don't see in Chaos Daemons, and you have already made them consistent for Tyranids.

What could work: The dreads as Soulgrinders (this is the easiest)
Boltpistols: Horrors
Princes could be Daemon Princes, perhaps of Tcheentz because of all the guns
Obliterators could be Flamers

But Tyranids is probably a better fit.

Cool stuff some wonderful concepts here. Their almost like a Daemonic version of the TWAR!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Thanks for all the comments, please keep them coming

I've finally finished building the basics of the whole army.
Next up is re-checking for mold lines, filling gaps and adding small decorative features (trophy skulls, more cybernetics, etc.)

Atleast now I can nag my friends about playing a test battle and see if I like playing choirzilla (and more importantly: if they like playing against it... )

I like the conversions but two things come to mind. 1: with all those metal parts you definately spent a nice chunk of change, and 2: for some reason transformers is comming to mind a lot not sure why.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

@Empchild:
Thank you
Ehm yeah, I spent way too much money, probably over $1200
I can think of the following models I bought specifically for this army:

1 bloodthirster
1 deamon prince
1 juggernaut
1 witch hunter tyrus
2 krieger "krash" thrax
2 chaos spawn (old)
1 chaos spawn (new)
2 chaos dreadnought
3 dreadnought
2 hellcannon
2 havoc with missile launcher
5 obliterator
3 khorne berzerker box
2 beastmen regiment
2 predators (one imperial and one chaos)
Lots of random bits

Come to think of it, it sure would have been cheaper to use transformers

@Redhuntyou:
Thanks, while I built the boltpistols to be identical, I did use all five different old bloodletter models for the bodies (body 1, body 3 and body 5 have been used twice and body 2 and 4 once), so I'm hoping it's just the pictures.

I've done some minor work on the first squad of genestealer stand-ins (removed moldlines, filled some gaps with greenstuff and gave them each a trophy skull hanging from the belt).
Below are the pictures I took for 3 of them.
