Few weeks ago I posted a thread with my first attempt at painting in CSM in 8 years: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/262679.page

Following on from the feedback and arrival of the GW washes sets I've painted another CSM. All models painted so far are only test models as I improve my paint skills whilst trying out new techniques.

The main thing I was trialling was to make the gold and metal look more realistic.

So for Gold:

Snake bite leather undercoat -> shinning Gold -> devlan mud wash-> burnished gold highlight -> faint mithril silver highlight

And metal:

Codex Grey undercoat-> boltgun metal -> badab black -> chainmail highlight -> faint mithril silver highlight.

I've tried a different way of highlighting the armour which I saw in the Games workshop Painting book for in the stage by stage for the Ultramarines bolt gun

70/30 mix of Chaos Black and codex grey -> few coats of heavily thinned codex grey. I left it at that but in the book it said a final highlight with fortress grey was used. Not having that colour I left it.

In some parts this look quite good but in other it hasn't worked so well mainly due to my paint skills having not caught up with my ambitions!

Sorry for the blurry second picture the camera struggled to focus on the shoulder pad that closely

On a side note there are some bullet holes I've modelled but not painted as not put any thoughts how to do it. And I haven't based or painted the base as didn't won't to waste resources on a model that will not appear in my army.

As always I welcome constructive feedback.

That's rather nice looking, but the red gun doesn't quite match the paint scheme. However, it's kind of old school, since guns used to be really bright in 2nd and 3rd edition.

For speed's sake - shining gold and boltgun metal both cover black in a single coat rather easily. You may not need to put down a basecoat for them. They do look nice and deep, but that can be accomplished with a Badab Black wash.

Thanks for all the comments!

Yeah that's where the idea for using red came from but we all know deep down that they were right back then.... Red gunz are more shooty!

When I paint the champion in the squad I'm about to assemble I'll probably only use red on the part of the casing with the skulls to make him stand out more from the others.

As for speeding painting up I'm in no rush as I don't get a lot of money to spend on the hobby (thanks to mortgage, bills and bemused fiancee). So the longer I can make the models I got last the better!

I like the red on the gun, but agree that it doesn't tie in with the rest of the model. Easily fixed by adding some red elsewhere on the armour, though.

Also: Drill the pistol barrel! It's a minor (and frequently overlooked or neglected) detail, but it makes a surprising amount of difference to the look of the finished model.

I like it as well. And personally I like the red plasma pistol. I think maybe because I offically started at the beginning of 3rd, but learned and played in 2nd with my older brother alot, so I like some things to look like the old school ways.
My only real complaint, is the chest piece looks a little bland, theres no highlights on it, but there are on other parts of the metal. Even it you give the rivets in it a light boltgun dusting to make them pop would work fine.
