I already have an existing IG army, they are lightly modified cadiens that I am currently makeing into an airborne army. This new IG project started as an idea several months ago and is now getting up speed. The idea is to do a mechanised ground army, to complement the airborne army, both will be in the neighborhood of 3000 points, or maybe 4000; all infantry units will have chimeras, also their will be tanks, tanks and more tanks; just havent got that far yet. Here are the first models I have done. I used different bits from different companies, the pig iron heads, the backpacks are from maxmini, and the weapon mods are all from scratch. The chimera was upgraded with an autocannon taken from the guard heavy weapon sprue, other, suble mods on it as well.

The heavy bolters were scratch built, I want each man on his own base, rather than putting two man teams on a large base.

[Thumb - 023.jpg]
I figured that guys riding around in chimeras should have shorter, more compact rifles, so the guns were all shortened and the scopes or targeters were made from plastic rod

I extended the regular flamer, just cause it looked cooler.

Very, very nice man. It reminds me alot of a modern force with the overall look and the camo scheme. Good job.

Has been a few weeks since I updated this, I have a new project I have been working on, which complements this army. I have been working on a new vehicle for the army, which is a piece of towed artillery. I have almost finished building the tow vehicle, as you will see, and am working on the trailer portion now (somewhat). The idea is that the "truck" part will count as a hydra flak tank, and the trailer will count as a deathstrike missile. I don't think there is any real tactical advantage to doing it this way, but I had an old model kit that was going to waste, and thought it would look cool as a "soviet-esque" towed nuke. I am not finished with the cab yet, I am still adding bits like hoses and cables to give it a 40k feel, but the major building part is done. My father in law was stationed in germany in the late 70s, with an armoured division and I happened to get all of his army memorabilia while cleaning out his attic last summer. Some of what I got included old vehicle identification manuals that detailed the soviet vehicles he might encounter in what was then a divided germany. I used those manuals as reference and inspiration.

I didn't realy illustrate it in the pics, but the model is fully articulated, turrets turn and pivot, and it sits on a realistic suspension, wheels roll,etc..

I give you credit, that is some amazing models.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

This is some great work, I really like the average joe guys, and the SA80 shaped lasgun. Not a fan of the heavy bolter guy though, it seems silly he'd be able to hold a gun of that size in such a manner, let alone deal with the kick from it without at least a dampening handle of some kind

Whats a dampening handle?

it removes most of the recall from the gun firing i believe?

Yeah, that's what i'm getting at. See, what you have a the moment is a gun that the guy's going to have to either put down to fire, or hug and hope it doesn't break his arm when he fires it. The type of handle i'm thinking of is like the one on the SM scout with HB

I think everything looks top-notch! You are right to call them "Chart-toppin"!

But...there is NO WAY a human could handle that heavy bolter the way your model is.

It's too big, and too heavy.

If you are looking to model man-portable HBs, look at the SM Scouts.

I kno there normally too heavy but whats not to saythat itwasnt converted for guard use? The guard have similar tech to the marines but some thinks are diffrent. he laso is carrying it so it is plausable.

I'm with Blue Orphen on the heavy bolter. It's not the fact that the guardsman is carrying a heavy bolter, it's that he's totting it straight up with one arm. It'd be hard to hold a normal rifle straight up on your bicep let alone a massive heavy bolter. Still, the army looks great! Those Pig Iron heads are a really nice on guardsmen, so keep up the good work!

Lol!
Really awesome stuff you got going here! I especially like the Autocannon on the Chimera and the shortened lasguns. Good work!
I have to agree on the HB, it really is too heavy for a regular Guardsman to carry it that way. The only person I can think of carrying it like that must be Sergeant Harker.
I'm keeping an eye on this blog

Back packs are from maxmini, I believe.

In response to the preponderance of comments on the heavy bolter, I think it would work for the following reasons: In the future, weapons are made from space age polymers and carbon fibre composites (oh wait, thats the present) Also, humans are bigger and meaner in the 41st millenium. Also, it has an aptly placed handle jutting from the side, for the left hand, intended to stabilize it. Also, if the trooper couldn't operate his weapon, he would have been executed for dereliction of his duties by his commisar long before being photographed for this blog. So that settles that.

You guys don't realy prefer the sm scout heavy bolter do you? That thing looks silly! With the way the handles are configured, it would operate more like a fire extinguisher than a fire arm! You couldn't aim it or shoulder fire it at all, and it looks like luggage with a bipod attached. In-deed... I spent a week modelling the chart-toppin vehicle, and you guys are all hung up on the dude with the heavy bolter. Oh well.....
Apologize if you must, its too late now, my feelings are hurt, I am crushed, I am gonna go watch cheesey romance movies with my wife and sob uncontrollably while consumeing dangerouse amounts of chocolate. If I should slip into a diabetic coma, may it hang heavy on your hearts....
Thanks for all the comments guys, I will try to bang out some more stuff and post asap

i think that the debate about the heavy is stupid, it looks awesome, yes it is absurdly big for an IG trooper, but that is why i think it is awesome. it makes you stop and think "how is he able to do that?" maybe he has a bionic arm under those fatigues, or as you said technology has advanced to the point were giant guns weigh next to nothing. ignore the nay sayers, i think you have nailed it!
anyway the flak gun/truck thing you have started... i like the idea, and the execution so far is good. i don't like the positioning of those heavy bolters though. haha, the irony, people complain about the trooper with the heavy and i complain about the vehicle mounted ones. anyway i think they would look more 40k if you used turret mounted heavies with robotic sights. just a thought. i can't wait to see the missile trailer! your modeling skills are A+

I'm loving your gaurd and the hydra/truck thing looks awsome, apart from the heavybolter sponsons, they look to fragile

95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building, copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair & grab some popcorn and yell JUMP!!!!!
Inquiring minds want to know: Do cos-players carry a costume version of the emergency roadside kit we all have in our cars?

I may be showing my age but in RT you could get suspensors that reduced the weight of equipment (encumbrance) and allowed larger weapons to be carried. I presume they no longer exist in 5th? if not say its bionics or combat drugs. The pose is classic GW and if we actually cared about extreme realism I doubt anyone would still be playing 40K.

Love the tanks and gritty paint scheme. Keep up the good work.

SUSPENSORS!!! I can't believe you remember that! Maybe I will model some Jakearo digital weapons, too. Thanks for the kind words, I will try to get some work done this weekend and post more pics. Unfortunately, my wifes cat got playful with some of my models last night, so I am currently doing a bit of repair work, as well as seeking a qualified taxidermist for the cat. Thanks again for all your comments and criticisms, guys.
