I started basing my AoBR set today. It's such a pain in the a**. I usually consider my self quite careful, but i managed to get PVA on my jeans, my hair (don't ask) and the inside legs of the models. I sorted it all out but crikey. I won't be looking forward to basing again...
I have watered down the PVA slightly, but is there anything else I should know? Do i need to put another PVA layer and sand on top of the other layer when it has dried Or will the primer secure it further?
I might just stick slate on bases on future models, less hassle.

I base my figures with sand and simular materials using watered down PVA glue thats applied with an old brush to avoid getting glue on the model, let alone myself (I didn't ask).
Once its dry I then apply the base coat colour mixed with PVA glue, this ensures that the sand stays put during the painting process.
Try covering small area of the base at any one time if you still have difficulty
I have also had sucess with poly filler, but I would only use this on large bases.

It was like being back in Primary School...it just gets everywhere.
So you can basecoat with PVA on top of glued sand and primer...sounds interesting.
I'll have a go. I still need to see where AoBR was fought so I have future ideas for other basing that would relate to it (muddy, rocky, grass etc).
Thanks for your help and input, Harms66.

I base with sand and PVA. I just squirt a dollop directly onto the base, then spread, drag, and push it around with a steel street sweeper I picked up off the street. It basically functions like a tiny painter's spatula or putty knife and since it's only about 1/8" wide, I can maneuver between legs and the like pretty easily. Also, since I'm just pushing the glue around instead of trying to paint it on, it's a lot easier to avoid getting it all over the model's legs. One blob in front, one in back, push around until I get the coverage I want, then bury the whole base in my container of sand. Once dry, I go over it with a stiff-ish brush to knock off the loose bits, clean up the edges if I have to, then prime. I go back over it with watered-down paint to get deep into the cracks, but I haven't needed to secure it any further than that. I'd paint on watered-down PVA if I wanted extra security. That's what I do on my terrain.

Use zap a gap because its thin yet very strong.
Which means it will easily flow to edges of feet and such , where PVA glue is too thick and usually you have to push the glue in ( which often ends up on their leg )
So zap a gap = your solution!@

When i am basing i use a blobl of PVA and spread it using the green stuff scalpel tool thingy that GW sell. Pretty precise and avoids messy models.
Admittedly i dont go for any real detail on my bases, usually just sand or a bit of gravel. Just somethgin to tie the army together.
One thgin i have tried that work pretty well was to buy soem thin plasticard with a metal tread pattern on it. cut circles out, stick them and paint them black with a drybrush of boltgun. lovely indutrial looking base.
