I find the personal odour thing to be the worst, many of those shops aren't airconned and some folks with less regular bathing and grooming habits make the air stale. My wife had to leave GW Bristol one day due to the stench and it's been ever thus with gaming stores in my experience, there's always one bastard that doesn't understand 'shower every day and use the deodorant'. When it's younger teens I guess it's slightly more forgivable, the transition to adulthood isn't always fully explained (ie, son, now you've got hormones n stuff in your body, your sweat will stink to high heaven and if you don't wash your unmentionables frequently, you'll make the air around you smell like a festering dead camel).
In other news...

I remember when my brother and his girlfriend came into a GW store, it was so funny cause here is my brother pretending to have nothing to do with the hobby while doing the whole "cool guy" thing and his girlfriend who was hot. every guy stoped what he was doing and just stared at her. I was surprised nobody said "it's a girl".
But it gets even better because my brother was into the hobby , he played tau but acted like 40k was the nerdist thing on the planet and how i was wasting my time playing the hobby, all of this infront of his girlfriend after we left the store. I just said don't you play 40k as well. He didn't say a word till we dropped her off at home.

I have to say my worst experience came very recently. Bearing in mind I went into the store for a single pot of paint.
The manager of the store first tried to offer me the previous months WD, then the current, then a subscription and then the foundation paint set. I could only take so much and then politely stated that I only want this one paint so do you want my money or not.
The new sales approach in GW is so annoying.

My experiences with Games Workshop have generally been very good especially Games Workshop Peterborough where I used to live the Store Manager (Tom I think haven't been back for a couple of years) is absolutely fantastic not pushy, very helpful and when he recommends you buy something it is because he has taken the time to hear about your army list and it is a sensible suggestion but it is always phrased in the 'this would be a great addittion some time in the future' so you very much feel that you have no pressure to buy it at all.
Any back OT my only real negative experience was in one of the Bristol Games Workshops. I went into buy about £100 worth of stuff for my SW and IG I would say that the manager would be fairly pleased to be taking this much money from someone who obviously knew what they wanted (I was at the counter within my second minute in the shop). However he proceeds to ask me about LOTR and do I play it. I politely say no it doesn't interest me. He then demands to know why, seeing that there are a fair number of other people in the shop I don't just give my honest view that it is flogging a dead horse and a very boring game that is specifically aimed at making money and nothing else. Instead I reply that I play Fantasy and 40K and have no time or inclanation for anything else. He then straight out tells me I'm wrong AND THEN ADDS A GONDOR BATTALION TO MY PURCHASES without asking and rings it through the checkout. I just look at him for a minute like he has lost it and turn to the lady behind me who is staring opened mouthed and who then with a shake of her head puts down her childs potential purchases and leaves the shop with her children in tow. My wife also leaves taking our kids with her as she senses I am about to blow.
I am not especially proud of what happened next but I think it was fairly justified I ask 'what the feth are you doing?' To which he first says there is no need to swear and then tells me that I must buy this item and expierence LOTR first hand. My credit card goes back in my wallet I told him to get fethed and leave the shop. Five minutes later I was speaking to the area manager who was profuse in his apologies and actually sent me all my orginal purchases free of charge and special delivery. I believe that particular store manager has now parted way with GW.

I'd have to say the last tournament I played, it was a 1,000pt team tourney, and the mix of unwashed/sweaty people combined with an overwhelming slavish devotion to winning from almost all participants pretty much broke me and my friend off from playing tournaments in our FLGS, it was the first time in 12 years I've ever been sickened by my hobby. suffice to say I've taken a much more casual approach to gaming since then to preserve my love for the hobby.

Oh in that case then the service definately has not improved...
I still remember one of the old managers for Broadmead. My girlfriend bought me some skaven stuff for my birthday. One of which was the WLC. I got it and it was missing the Chasis. I phoned up and was told to come down on Sunday and we will replace it. Suffice to say I turned up on Sunday and the shop was not open. I waited for ages for it to open only to be told to go away. Phoned up Customer Services straight away. The guy I spoke to knew the old manager Ben who I was friends with. I ended up on the phone to him for about 45 minutes. He said he would send out a replacement straight away. On the tuesday I get a huge box. In it is 2 WLC, 1 Screaming Bell and a handfull of blister. Worst and best service in one go.

Yeah, I don't go in very often, but when I do Brad is always pleasant to talk to. I don't get any hard sells these days, but I remember when it used to be a very distracting experience.

Wow.
I think this might be the first time, in one of these threads, someone mentioned themselves as being the "worst experience" for people.
I mean, because you didn't know that there IS a special rule for SM Drop Pods to come in on first turn & that they DO have wargear that eliminates scatter for reserves, you found it appropriate to STEAL something of his, rather than be honest & turn it in to an employee.
Yeah. Sounds to me like the problems were ALL because of him.
Eric
Well actually, It was on the floor after he left, which was about an hour previously. Not to mention he forgot that he couldn't assault after shooting rapid fire, and he forgot what turn it was every couple seconds, and he was an overall bad gamer. I don't really need to justify anything further, what's done is done. Karma is a bitch, but I've got revenge! Bwahaha
And also, huh. Guess I should actually read the Space Marine codex rather than taking the advice of shotty gamers at the table next to us.
And no, I now know the rules, you only deep strike half of the drop pods, and he was deep striking all of them. Also, there's no such rule that says they don't scatter. There is a rule that says they may NOT land on impassable terrain, which was not the case.

Interesting.
So, it's okay to steal something he forgot to take with him, rather than turn it in to management of the facility.
Sorry. Can't see the logic on that one.

You're right that there's no "no scatter" rule for Drop Pods. They do all Deep Strike, though. Half (rounded up) on Turn 1 & the rest as regular reserves (have seen people make legitimate mistakes with that, too).
Have you looked at what upgrades are available for them, though?

Drop Pods have 2 upgrades: Locator Beacons and Deathwind Launchers. There are 2 rules which it has automatically has: The Drop Pod Assault allows half of your Pods to automatically arrive on Turn 1, and the Inertial Guidance System reduces the scatter if it would contcact another model or terrain.

a locator beacon only works if it was on the table the turn the droppods deepstrike, so in turn 1 it can't be used unless another model within the sufficient range is there.

are you sure? I thought once the pod landed its locator beacon would then allow the rest to drop down around it with no scatter.

Drop pods and locator beacons are not this hard, guys.
Locator Beacons: Must already be in play at the beginning of the turn you are trying to use them. If you drop a pod down on turn one with a locator beacon, you can't use it's powers until turn 2. If you want to use a locator beacon on turn one, infiltrate a scout biker squad with a locator beacon then scout move them closer to the enemy. (Please go read the Locator Beacon entry if you think otherwise.)
Drop Pods: Yes, they still freaking scatter 2d6" like anything else. However, if the scatter would cause them to land on another unit (Friendly or Enemy) or would drop them in impassable terrain, then they scatter the minimum distance to avoid such placement. Note that this doesn't prevent them from scattering off the table (and suffering a mishap roll) or landing in dangerous or difficult terrain, where they will have to make a dangerous terrain test. Since they are automatically imobilized no matter where they land, failing a dangerous terrain test would then inflict a Weapon Destroyed result.

So this person is just a friend, but she invited you to come with her to try on bikinis?
And I don't really understand. There was a fat kid scratching his ass staring down your friend in short pants? Was he picking his nose?
yes and yes..

Ed_Bodger wrote:My experiences with Games Workshop have generally been very good especially Games Workshop Peterborough where I used to live the Store Manager (Tom I think haven't been back for a couple of years) is absolutely fantastic not pushy, very helpful and when he recommends you buy something it is because he has taken the time to hear about your army list and it is a sensible suggestion but it is always phrased in the 'this would be a great addittion some time in the future' so you very much feel that you have no pressure to buy it at all.
I had an experience similar to this, I went in with my wife to buy, and I kid you not, 1 pot of paint that I needed. I'm stood at the till with my paint the assistant asks if I need anything else, I politely say no thanks, he then asks if I have seen the £150 paint set that GW does. I say yes but I'm not interested thanks. The twit then harps on about it for 15 sodding minutes trying to convince me to buy it, I swear I would still be there now if my wife hadn't wondered over from where she had been flicking through a rule book, enquired about what was going on and then with a slight smile told the assistant if I even tried to buy the paint set for that much she would cut my balls off before the credit card left my wallet, oddly enough after a moments silence there was a slight beep from the till and I was away with my single pot of paint.
I can't stand how GW are obsessed with hard selling stuff to adults, fine try and bambozle a child but I'm 26 for gods sake. Automatically Appended Next Post: CURNOW wrote:I went shoping with a friend yesterday in truro and after 2hrs of her trying on bikinis ...!
Lol I love how you made that sound like a chore, "god yes your breasts look fine in that one too, can't you speed this up a bit"
