Hello Dakka,

I have been painting and collecting Space Wolves for years but recently decided to revamp my army by painting a load of the new models and making a 'new' Space Wolves Army with a more Fenrisian/snowy theme.

Some of these models were completed a long time ago and some have been wip for some time but my aim in the next few months is to complete the following list:

Ragnar Blackmane conversion
2 x Rune Priest
Ulrick the Slayer
Wolf Priest
Wolf Guard Squad
Wolf Lord on TW
4 x TWC
10 wolf scouts
12 Long Fangs
4 packs of Grey Hunters with 12 - 13 models in each so they can be correctly configured in a variety of ways for tournament play
15 Blood Claws
Predator
4 Rhinos
4 Razorbacks
2 Land Raiders
4 Land Speeders.

This is obviously not an army list but is an idealised project which I would love to have an apoc game with at the end to get all the models on the table.

It is the legs and arms of the Vanguard Veteran Sgt with parts from the Space Wolves kit (both old and new) and some Space Marine bits. I personally don't like the confusion of a frost weapon looking like a chainsword in the original model so wanted I though the relic blade was an ideal fit.

I really like the 2 ahnded grip on Ragnar's frost blade. TBH, I would have preferred to see a chainblade type dealio to represent a Frost blade, but you did a good job on it.

Thought I would post up a few photos of the army as a whole minus a few rhinos and razorbacks bought since the photos.

Thats a decent # of Wolves.

Small update today, I have had very little painting time but have finished Ragnar and thought I'd put in two of my Grey Hunters with Wolf Standards:

My only comment is that I find the skin a tad dark. But if you were intending that, then it looks good.

One thing though.. Ragnar wasnt called blackmane because of his black hair. Didnt the book mention that his wolfen pelt was dark black like the fenrisian wolves?

It did indeed and I originally painted it that way however I didn't like the way it came out and rather than standing out as a unique character point within the army it just looked wrong. As with the decision to make Ragnar's Frost Blade look like a powersword rather than a chain sword I made the decision to do Ragnar in the way I pictured him rather than necessarily according to the fluff an the model I ended up with feels right. Also the basing makes him the equivalent of a foot taller than the other marines which I really like.

@ Wolfshadow did you mean the skin on the wulfen model? If so then the idea was to go dark, all the fluff I have read says that as Space Wolves mature their skin becomes darker and more leathery I presume as a result of the Canis Helix so I thought that a Battle Brother who had gone further down the road to a wulfen would demonstrate this even further. Also it was a good opportunity to paint some dark looking flesh.

Just out of sheer curiosity, are you going to add a Sven anywhere in the army?

That is a very good idea, do you have any suggestions for wargear or look of the model? If I did I think I would make him a wolfguard rather than a Grey Hunter.

Sven should have a power fist and a bolt pistol

Ok finished off the Rhino today but that will be the end of photo updates until next week as I am away all weekend. Next week's project is to finish the last member of Grey Hunter Pack 1 and finish the rest of Grey Hunter pack 2. maybe I'll do a razorback as well but with five assignments due by 4th January painting time is somewhat limited.

The mud on the Rhino needs some texture to kick it up that tiny extra notch . Maybe some weathering pigment, or to go on the cheap, some chalk mixed with some sepia wash might work.

Nice job on the Predator. I like the shade of Grey you use.

Do you plan on weathering the Pred?

Wolfshadow - yes I plan on finishing the weathethering on the Rhino and adding some to the pred but am waiting until I have got more of the tanks painted to the same standard and then going to do them in one go. The Pred was airbrushed and the Rhino painted so they have slightly different finishes. If it wasn't so cold I would do more airbrushing but as my wife banishes me to the garage to do that I'll leave the airbrushing until the snow goes.

Tomorrows update will hopefully include the completed second pack of Grey Hunters with their accompanying Wolfguard. I must say that painting extra marines so as to comply with WYSIWYG is increasing the painting time considerable. For example this Grey Hunter Pack includes: A wolf guard with CM/PF, a Grey Hunter with a PF, MOW, Wolf Standard, 2 melta guns, a second plasma gun for the first pack to give them the option of dual plasma, and there is a power weapon in there as well as the six bolter armed guys. Still with 13 -14 Wolves to each pack it should make tailoring the lists for tournaments, and different styles of friendly games much easier. Plus with the extra marines hopefully there will be enough for a fifth legal pack if I ever want one.

Looking at my old SW army it is so tempting to do a few converted paint jobs on the older packs which would speed up the painting of this army dramatically but that would detract from the point of the project. The rule I am sticking to is only old models that where never painted can be used.

Anyway hopefully I will get a couple of hours painting in tonight and that will be enough to complete this pack...
