Im trying to get some ideas together to get my Space Marines painted. Ive had a terrible time picking and sticking with a Chapter since I started playing this game 11 years ago. For some reason, there's something I like about just about all of them, and Ive even tried to create my own twice with no luck.

I have a ton of stuff sitting around and Id love to get it going, but I really need some help, suggestions and especially, motivation! I do want to play the army, I just dont want to settle for unpainted/half-primed anymore.

Help!
T-

**Also, pictures or links would be amazing!
Thanks!

Ultramarines are pretty forgiving. Blue is an easier color than most. Salamanders could also work.

Yeah. Ultramarines are alright. Another easy one is raven guard seeing as all you gotta do is highlight a few colours.

Hmm. not really. All the chains and small bits can be hard to paint.

I certainly dont want to seem nit-picky by any means, but what about non-black chapters?

My level of painting skill is decent, so Im not too worried about details. I just hate shading/highlighting black! lol

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Haha I agree with you 100%! Black is so boring to highlight

What you can do is to go to GW home page and click your way to the SM part, there they have
a good selection of pics from various chapters, just to get your imagination flowing

White Scars are actually easier - white primer, with some additions, and you can have fun with it.

Well, my Chapter ( The Chrome Warriors ) use a simple metal scheme. Black primer followed by silver. All the robes/clothes are painted dark green. Eyes are red. That is all. Makes for a simple and quick process. Off course on top of this there are the weapons and accessories ( powerfists, bolters, handgrenades etc. ) but I won´t go into those.

I know the hardest one too do is the howling griffons getting those lines to match up and quartering and hand painting all the griffons on.... pain in the @$$... But its worth it.... I would have too say easiest army too paint would be white white scars primer white, spray paint white. Then wash with brown Ink and black ink, done

Then would be Black templar primer black paint black, primer shoulder pads white paint white.... light dry brush of dark grey, red for the eyes... done....

If you enjoy painting different chapters... what about a Deathwatch type deal? Not actual deathwatch because they do stick to a uniform scheme. I mean like, a coalition of happenstance. There have been a few times when members of different chapters have fought together.

Korea (South, of course!)

I'll second (or third?) Ultramarines.

Blue and green are some of the easiest colors to paint over a black undercoat.

I had been struggling with a predominantly white-colored homebrew chapter. Then one day I got so sick and tired of how I need to apply layer after layer of white to make the color anywhere near opaque, and painted up the next marine in Ultramarine blue just for the heck of it.

It was refreshingly easy, and immediately motivated me so much that I ended up scrapping my homemade color scheme.

Blood Angels (or any other predominantly red Chapter) *look* easy enough at first glance, but it's a real pain to paint red on top of a black undercoat. I'd strongly advise you to avoid red if you want "easy" painting.

They are all equally easy to paint badly!

Pick a scheme/chapter that you like and we can tell you the best way to simplify the scheme to make it look decent and go quickly.
Some colours lend to inking, some dipping, some dry brushing, some coloured sprays are a good basecoat etc etc

The most important thing imo when speed painting marines is to part assemble and spray shoulders, guns, helmets etc different colours as appropriate.

Remember that your models will always look better fully based with banners and transfers/squad markings. Insure to plan this into the
building/spraying/dipping stages to speed things up. Nothing worse than having to glue and black undercoat gravel on a hundred or so fresh looking white marines.
Better off doing the bases and models seperately with different sprays then combining the two elements.

Hope this helps.

Any chapter with a solid color scheme (Ultramarines, Dark Angels, etc.), avoiding the white, red and yellow color. For serious ease and speed of painting, use an airbrush to spray the basecoat all other the model, then to do a zenithal higlighting. Wash all over the body, then do the color picks, such as eyes, etc.

As mentionned aboce, everything that is another base color (helmet, shoulder pad, bolter, etc) shouldn't be assembled before spaying the color.

Metallics are easy to paint. Primer balck and then a metal of your choice. Metalics pretty much highlight themselves.

I paint my Iron Warriors with black primer, boltgun, mud wash. done.....obviously there are more detaisl in their (weapons, shoulder pads etc) but that is the basic painting.

Use the mechrite red foundation paint and it becomes just as easy as other single colour chapters. Just tossing that out.

This! Just pick a solid, spray it and wash it. Highlight and pick out details when you get time.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! Ive been trying out a lot of your suggestions, on some extra figures I have, and Im seeing some great things. Those Washes and Foundation Paints really are amazing!

I may be drifiting back to one of my custom chapters as I might feel bad letting some previously painted some years ago stuff go to waste (like a dreadnought, 7 tactical marines, chaplain, command squad and captain!)

I think the reason I stopped on them is the first figures I painted (the Captain and Command squad) are slightly different colored than the others (Dreadnought, Tactical Marines and Chaplain).

The colors I used are undercoat black, paint whole figure Liche Purple, Drybrush Shadow Grey or Fenris Grey, add Red Gore, then Blood Red to the should pad trim, Tin Bitz and a highlight of Brazen Brass for the armor joints and aquilas. The above mentioned red for the Bolter casing, Boltgun metal on the actual Bolter. Greens for the extra details.

Here are some pictures of the already/originally painted stuff

Sorry for the blurs, my phone is all I have at the moment, haha.

I like it! A bit blurry though. One thing I would suggest is to thin your paints a bit as it looks kinda lumpy but this may just be be ause of the blurriness.

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately yea, it is the pictures that cause it to look a little lumpy, as they're really not. Good ol' camera phone!

Any other comments/critiques?
Thanks!

Well I don't really like the clashing effect of the orange on the carapace. A little bit bright. It hurts me eyes. Like how you did the banners though.

I'm not sure how good that Yellow you mentioned is, but just to let the OP know- don't try Imperial Fists with GW paints if you want an easy to paint chapter. Yellow is one of the most difficult colours to paint well (white and red can be awkward too).

I always found Ultramarines to be one of the easiest, as Ultramarines Blue is very forgiving. Dark Angels are fairly easy too, until you get to the Veterans/Special Characters with robes.

The custom chapter looks decent, it's a shame about the camera though.
