How to create a Necron Staff of Light, as seen in the codex/Dawn of War

OK, so what I started with was the Necron Lord my wife got me for Christmas - the one holding the resurrection orb. Note that I finished the lord before I decided to convert it into a SoL, so that's why it's half painted and mostly unfinished.

Parts:
I used some bits from SPEHSS MEHRINES!! tactical squad daggers, Empire State troops halberds, and some unidentified sword bits - there are better sword bits here

1.) Cut off the top of the warscythe, the blade parts, with snips, right above where the top of lord's hand ends. File smooth.
2.) Cut off the bottom of the warscythe, about an inch below his hand. file smooth.
3.) Re-attach the the bladed warscythe part to the bottom of the staff. You're going to want to pin it, I think.
3a.) Bonus optional step - don't cut off one of the blades like I did because you worked with a poor source image. The one in the game is supposed to have both blades. Oops.
4.) Find a spare sprue. You'll find some circular extrusion pins at various points on one side. Slice one of these off, and trim to be the same depth all around. This is the base of what you'll attach blades to.
5.) Using 3 of the unidentified sword bits*, trim off the curvy end parts, Glue those to the top of the circle as shown.
6.) Cut the blades off of 2 SPEHSS MEHRINES!! daggers from the assault kit. Those go in the middle, blade edge down, angled up as shown.
7.) Trim the Empire State Halberds to make the bottom hooks and glue as shown.
8.) Cut the handle off the Empire State Halberds and use that to make the top of the handle.
9.) Pin the staff head to the rod.

You're done!

I do like the look of this SoL. Much better than the orginal. Great Work. I might have to steal this idea when I get done with my Orks.

I wish I would have seen this before I finished my sons Necron Lord for him. Hmm, I may just have to still give it a go.

Yea that is friggin awesome. I seriously cant wait for the Necrons to get a 5th edition dex, because they look FAR cooler then their lame ass rules do them justice. Nice work, and I like how your tutorial is almost Orky

I'll post more pics when it's finished. Right now I'm adding some countour putty to thwere it's glued and filing until it looks like it's all one piece, and not an amalgamation of different stuff. I'm also going to fix the bottom of the staff, adding back the blade I incorrectly snipped. Or maybe use different blades, if I can make them look cooler.

OK, so it wasn't as soon as I wanted (snicker) but I did finally get some more work in. Unfortunately I skipped taking pics of some steps, but they are pretty simple:

1.) Once the basic frame was completed as above, I mixed up some 5 minute epoxy. I then carefully spread some onto the blades to give them some thickness and make it look like one piece. I let this dry, and repeated with the other side.

2.) Filed those down so it was nice and smooth.

3.) I painted it all with Boltgun Metal, and overpainted so it didn't look as good as it could have.

4.) I guesstimated the center of it, and I drilled out a hole with a pin vise. I glued in a pin.

5.) I got some sheet styrene, and used a hole punch to make some discs. I painted these with shining gold. I then drilled out the centers for the pin.

6.) I glued the discs onto the staff, with the pin to hold them on. I then kicked them, filed the tip down, and touched up the edges with some burnished gold.

7.) I then glued over the pin a sapphire green rhinestone.

8.) I touched up the parts that I messed up, did a light wash, and took glued the staff onto the lord:

The Lord isn't 100% done - some parts need another wash, some little touchups, and dullcote (I'm going to paint the rod and gems with liquid latex before dullcoting).

Now, the base isn't done at all. That's intentional - there is a new tutorial I am working on which I think will be awesome.

Note: If you're going to do this project, there are several places I messed up and you can do better:

A.) I severely overpainted the staff head with Boltgun metal. I wish I had waited till then end and did 2 thin coats.
B.) I painted those discs gold before pinning and gluing them - it would have been better to have positioned and glued the discs unto an unpainted staff, and then painted them at the end.
C.) As I mentioned earlier, I screwed up and cut off the blade and should not have. Also, the junction where I put it on the bottom could maybe have been done better.

Overall I'm quite pleased with it, however, and I think the next tutorial when I finish it will really, as they say, make it pop.

The staff itself looks pretty good, but it seems to suffer from the same problem I had when I made one, in that it just looks too big for the guy holding it.

Eh, I don't see anything wrong with going OTT. Besides, it's pretty ginormous in the game, too.
