Is this too small for a Tyranid Drop Pod?
http://armorcast.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=146&osCsid=512f2cfe76280992e8d787612b88d08e
Are they supposed to have the same footprint as a SM drop pod?

The Tyranid pod holds 20 infantry. I think this is probably way too small.

Not any worse than those stupid plasma hatcher toys that everybody is going nuts over. I would rather have this model for 2 bucks more apiece than that toy thing for 10 bucks apiece.

Have you seen the Rhino? It barely fits 5 marines let alone 10.
I am currently buying a few of those pods since they look pretty alien and believable.

The scale is out of whack in 40k by quite a bit really. Don't try to match scale in a game that has arbitrarily thrown it out the window.

Need I remind you that Tyranids are like those little sponge dinosuars you used to buy as a kid.
Just drop them in your bath water and they grow to the size of your fist!!
How else do you explain a tervigon? He can store as many as 126 Termiguants....

Another thing to remember is that it can effectively be like a womb in there. All the gaunts are curled up in little embryonic sacks in a state of suspended animation. As it lands, the pod jolts their sensory inputs and they reconnect consciously with the hive mind. They easily erupt from their sacks and spill out of the pod.
|
Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Yeah, already ordered 3 of these, just waiting on them to arrive. Ill use them as Mycetic Spores until (or if) GW make a kit. If I feel the need to buy a kit, I can always just use these Armorcast pods as alien scenery, so it's no loss as far as I'm concerned.
And yeah, scale went out the window a long time ago with 40k. You couldn't fit 10 Marines in a Rhino, regardless of whether it's a MkI or a MkII. I always picture the 'Nids in a Mycetic Spore as curled up in protective fluid sacs (like frozenwastes' suggestion), which are triggered as the Pod is about to land. If the 'Nids in a spore are curled up a lot, you could probably fit a lot more in than the models suggest.

Never really envisioned what you have on the table as the full spore pod anyway, more like the core that remains after the shell is shattered and infantry released.
As for the birthing pod thingies, I'd like the idea more if it had a scale comparison. Not really looking for true scale, but I'd like to know it's bigger than a guardsman.

I picked up a $2 plastic globe at Grand & Toy, and pulled the two hemispheres apart. They're each about 5" diameter and 2 1/2" tall. They're perfectly smooth, but a thin layer of greenstuff will allow some rough sculpting to make it more organic, and after attaching a bunch of the tentacle/sphincter bits from the Battle for Maccrage sprues they should look good enough. They might be a bit short to give cover to a Trygon, but other than that they'll be fine.
The leafy pod is too plant-like for my taste.

From memory, this is only about 3" / 75mm high so it is on the small side - okay for a couple of Zoan's or a brood of gaunts all crammed into a small space, but not big enough for a 'fex or sim.
Having said that, until GW get around to giving us an official model (2011 anyone ?), then its as probably as good as anything else available off the shelf.

You're wrong there. I saw a Mk1 with 10 Marines seated inside, using old metal Land Speeder crew.

Too bad they will cost an arm and a leg and take eons to arrive in the mail.
I'm actually going the "Plasma Hatcher" route since they can still be had for about 8.00 US a pop and they're about the same size as a Marine Drop Pod so I think the scale is fine.
