Lustful Cultist of Slaanesh

Hiya.. I'm a noob here.. the stickies seem to imply this is the best place to post this so just move me if I'm wrong

I'm just starting out an bought Assault on Black Reach along with a friend. He's building an orky army which is fine.. I personally didn't fancy being regular Space Marines so I decided to start by converting the AoBR SM stuff into CSM.

Here's my generic army plan for a 1500 point army, though I'll probably wind up with more stuff as time moves on.

HQ:
Daemon Prince
Chaos Lord on Mount of Slaanesh

Elites:
Chaos Dread
Terminators x10
Posessed x 5

Troops:
CSM x10
Noise Marines x5
Daemonettes of Slaanesh x10

Chaos Dreadnought

I decided to start with the Dread, going from the illustrations and photos in the Chaos SM Codex.
I filed off all the Space Marine specific icons, purity seals and stuff, then using plasticard worked on making some plating similar to what's on the GW Chaos Dread. I also used Milliput to build a helmet-type thing, again using the GW Chaos dread for inspiration. The addition of some Milliput smoke launchers and a skull and here we are:

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/be19d9dfa5faff41f8379a15eeae5d65.jpg

and painted...

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/e9e7deb176a5a954ad6b2f99a52710df.jpg
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/c2720b9aac68c9efdd0102bf15419141.jpg

He's still a bit of a WIP as I need to sort the base a bit and paint it, as well as drill out the barrels of the Multi-Melta he's holding.. He's my first model so please bear that in mind.. C&C welcome though. The paint I was using on him wasn't quite right so the texture is a bit rougher than I would've liked.

Chaos Terminators:

I got 5 terminators with Assault on Black Reach, and figured I'd buy a set of 5 Chaos Terminators to bolster the forces.
Here's the ones from the Chaos Terminator box:

1: With Power Weapon and Combi melta (I think)

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/74a9a1447ccd3b0f398c6cca6593ec9a.jpg

2: With Dual Lightning Claws (from the plastic Chaos Lord via a bitz site)

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/af2e7fa09ac7455467cad982219c542f.jpg

3: With Combi Flamer and Lightning Claw (from a SM Commander model, grafted onto a Power Fist arm)

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/56969a7e9742e15c29d80e5fc744ac4b.jpg
4: With Power Weapon and Reaper Autocannon

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/997f0f25458a07007a6a4a5b17b276e0.jpg

5: Terminator Champion with Dual Lightning Claws (see above) and a little custom tunic thing to make him stand out more.

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/c93d711ba9bf472abba4de64eefc4cb1.jpg

Converted AoBR Terminators:

My original plan for the AoBR termies was to file off all the Imperial stuff and paint them. Job Done.

I soon realised though that merely stripping the Imperial stuff off the AoBR termies wasn't going to be good enough to make them not stand out (ie look rubbish) next to the Chaos termies.. so I set about doing a more extensive conversion. I'm a noob, but I think I've done okay.

Note: I'd partly painted 2 of the AoBR terminators before I decided to do more conversion work which is why a couple of the models are partly painted.

I bought some more Chaos Terminator shoulder pads from a bitz site meaning I need to cut the molded shoulder from the Power Fist arm. Adding the Chaos Termie shoulder pads really makes the models start to look *right* so I'd suggest anyone doing something similar try to get hold of some.
As for the Chaos Terminator trophy racks, I realised that not all my models need a full trophy rack making the ones I got with the Chaos Terminator box go a bit further.

1: With Heavy Bolter and Power Fist

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/4496eb6d8393920ce766aee374b47736.jpg
Lots of Milliput work, including a little face on the chest, tunic type stuff and tusks. The Power Fist is from the original model but I've used a bit of Milliput between it and the main body so the posture is a bit more dynamic, which helps because the AoBR termies are all in a rather dull posture. The bolter is a spare from the Chaos Termies sprue as are the trophy racks.

2: With Heavy Flamer and Power Fist
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/a79183c28fc20d2ad1cf2a87aca99b11.jpg
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/3bb4b40c2e14d02e7572e63408c0a841.jpg
Fair bit of Milliput on the chest with the attempt to make it look like it has chaos arrows pointing onto it. should look ok painted. Bits of plasticard added to make the legs look more like the older power armour.

3: With Heavy Bolter and Power Fist
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/bb0663ae95814bd9b006cdc6fd3df87d.jpg
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/c063f88224504774ee8752deaf14c7c9.jpg
Plasticard added to the chest and a tunic-thing made from Milliput. Both arms this time are from the original model, treated as mentioned above; I added a sword blade (from the AoBR Commander) and a bit of plasticard to the bolter so it looks more like the Chaos terminator bolters.

4: With Icon of Slaanesh, Power Weapon and Heavy Bolter

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/5aaf0bd661d4c37fa86e4bbc5ba035b7.jpg
The Icon is cut from Plasticard.. other things done as described above. Both weapons are spares from the Chaos Term box.

5: Terminator Champion with Heavy Bolter and Chainfist

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/501acebf4dd892ca7471b3b41e85edc0.jpg
The knee skull is from a little scenery item you get on one of the AoBR sprues. Added plasticard arrows, etc, mainly as well as a milliput hook thing.

These squads will actually be split apart so that the Icon Bearer will actually be in a squad with the three Lightning Claw weilding Terminators and the Autocannon, while the others make up the other squad. Figured it was daft having an Icon of Slaanesh in a group with so many power fists and a chain fist.
Again, C&C welcome.. will update as I paint em.

I've done nothing to these lassies aside from paint them (nothing was really needed tbh).. need to touch up some areas where I've gone over the edges of the clothes onto the skin (all in the learning process I guess), then move onto the bases. C&C welcome as always.. will keep you update as I finish them

Posessed Chaos Space Marines:

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/bf20078e404dce86070427dc578dff6c.jpg

I couldn't resist the temptation to include some Posessed because the models are just so awesome. I've barely started painting - just a few layers of drybrush on the 'daemon skin' sections of the models, but I figured I'd show them anyway because every WIP starts somewhere.

AoBR Chaos Space Marine Conversions:

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/bae8984e3aa4cfe8e9a3ce4d776ef57c.jpg

I've done very little to my CSMs so far.. they started life as Space Marine models from AoBR, which I then did my best to remove Imperial eagles and purity seals from. Then I picked up some CSM backpacks for from a bitz website. The main one I've altered is the missile launcher wielding CSM; he has a special backpack but originally it had regular SM vents on it, so I cut those off and instead added vents cut from a CSM backpack instead. That meant I had to move the little loader crane thing too.
I also added an Icon of Slaanesh this time to the back of one of the backpacks, because to me that seemed the best way of handling it in a squad that I don't have an icon bearer for.
Again, C&Cs welcome.

That's about it for now

BTW sorry if this post is too image-heavy.. I think most of us these days have enough bandwidth for it but there wasn't anything in the rules telling me how many pictures were allowed.

Right now I don't plan on adding any more to my 'generic CSM' troops but may do in future, at which point I'll very likely mix them up a bit.
I plan on modifying my CSMs anyway to look more chaotic.

I do try. I know some parts of the terminators need attacking with a file at some point.

Right.. so as a blog type thread this gets updated frequently.. I've done more work on a few things so I figure I'll show them

Daemonettes:
Touched up the paint quite a bit so now I would consider them done, pending base work.

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/213caad9832864fe0e94d020cc4c4548.jpg
http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/093a34c1618c2dca5851c7f42420b104.jpg

Posessed CSMs:
Teeth and bone parts coloured and a bit more work on the 'daemon flesh' parts of the models. I think this deep red will look nice in contrast with the silver & purple colour scheme my army will have.

AoBR Space Marine -> Chaos SM conversion work:
Despite having primed and begun painting my Chaos SM guys I decided to work on them a bit to see how I could make them more chaotic and therefore less obviously AoBR marines with chaos backpacks on.. so out came the files, off came bits of paint and on went the plasticard.

The main change I can see to the armour between the regular SM and the Chaos ones is the kneepads on the SM compared with the older style 'no-kneepads' on the Chaos SM (fluff-wise I believe that's because the CSM are wearing older armour). I tried to replicate this a bit better than I had on my Termies (you can see my attempts on the Terminators above) so worked out if I cut a shape out of plasticard and glue it around the leg I will get this shape.
Did it work? Yes and no. Yes the shape is about right but unfortunately it's made the lower legs much more bulky than they would ordinarily be.. but y'know what.. I kinda like that.
Only problem is it took ages just to do this one guy.. lol.. but I'm thinking I might do this to all of them.

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/82fb85aa6b16422eea5aba10c527665f.jpg

I also worked on my seargent.. erm, Aspiring Champion I mean. I replaced his pointy hand with a fist from the discarded AoBR terminator power sword left arm and glued a bolt pistol on (because I didn't have any gun holding left arms I improvised). This makes his visible loadout similar to that of the Aspiring Champion on the CSM sample pic on the GW website.. I need to green stuff the seams a bit but I quite like the effect because the pointing seargent is very recognisable as being from AoBR. I'm now debating on whether to cut off his head and reglue it looking to the side.

http://primalroar.net/goforth/photos/rcache/a4f3649f563a07284f0cdc1c49fa52a7.jpg

Both these CSM need more GS and plasticard work because there's clear gaps and rough edges where things have been glued.. but I think I'm getting there.

I seem to have gotten the hang of taking photos of them anyway.. seeing them this big really shows the flaws *sigh* oh well.

C&Cs welcome

Done a little more to my CSM legs
I'm still not sure about them but I think they're starting to come together and will look alright when edges are greenstuffed and they're painted.. but I'm still not entirely sure.

What do you guys think of the legs?

You know that Slannash's number is 6? so Id go for units of 6 noise marines and units of 12 Daemonettes and use them as sommoned troops as they dont take up a troops choice.

No I didn't.. the chaos space marine codex doesn't mention that..
I might go down that route at some point but for the time being I'll be going with the number of figures that GW sell in each set because I'm on a limited budget.

It doesn't?? Uhg, the new book is an abomination. Anyway, Slaanesh is 6, Nurgle is 7, Khorne is 8, Tzeentch is 9, Malal is 11, and the Iron Warriors like multiples of 3.

There are all of two paragraphs in there about Slaanesh him/herself. A bit more about Slaanesh specific rules but that's it.
It doesn't even mention that the creation of Slaanesh brought about / was caused by the fall of the Eldar.. I got that from the AoBR book.

If somehow I can get hold of a couple more daemonettes I'll make sure I have 12..
Noise Marines bizarrely appear to be sold in packs of 8; the GW website doesn't have a description for them unfortunately.. But three of them seem to be weilding normal bolters in their pic. btw does anyone know if they're metal or plastic?
I could easily therefore make six from the pack into Noise Marines, add two to my group of CSM and split them into two groups of six, maybe have one group as Chosen.

The old CSM books had far more fluff on the gods and their ways, in the newest CSM book it's about the biggest scariest marines, not the gods they follow. I am glad I have all the old books going back a couple decades, helps to get a more round picture. You can pick up the old books on ebay, definitely advise it if you want to understand more about Slaanesh and the other major gods.

Loving the stuff so far, converting the AoBR marines was an interesting place to start, honestly wouldn't have thought of it myself, but you've done a wonderful job. Awaiting updates on the Daemon Prince with anticipation

If I can get some older books I might do; wikipedia has been reasonably helpful though.
As for converting the AoBR marines.. well it was the most cost effective way for myself and a friend to start gaming, and I just couldn't get inspired by the regular SMs.

Yep. If your demon prince is 'too big' you can always do one of my favorite things - add more wounds. Or heck, give it a void shield and structure points. Everyone knows a serious demon would fight off a warhound or jackal titan easily.

Simply to put more paint the paintbrush and make sure the layer is uniformly thick, I recently went back through my entire army and using more paint on the brush (plus some washes ) made the whole look better.

The effect I'm trying to get across is.. well.. a chaos spawn, mutating continually, some parts bones covered with thin skin, some parts with distorted muscles, etc..
I'm not sure how well it's working so figured now was a good time to down tools, post some wips and ask for feedback on him so far.

Really love the plasticard, but you need to work on your milliput skillz. The material has certain limits, and for what your trying to do you need to use green stuff. They are not bad attempts though, I just think the cloth is too thick!

You might be right, though I was seeing it more as thick leather than cloth.
At least now I actually have some green stuff I can work with that instead.

Lustful Cultist of Slaanesh

Well, I've been praticing more with Green Stuff and have nearly finished Benny, my Sprue Spawn. Maybe I should think of a better name I don't know.
Chaos Spawn are a fantastic thing for practicing on.. because it doesn't matter all that much if it looks odd.

I'm improving with my sculpting skills I think but I'm not quite up to FW standards, lol..

any C&C would be greatly appreciated, thanks
