So i've decided to get back into gaming an i've decided that necromunda is the game for me. never played it before, but always wanted to an used to play 40k an mordheim. mordheim was always a personal favorite of mine, but prefered futuristic themed games. now that said i've been looking to start making a gaming board thats 4'x4'. i have a basic outline i'm working on in sketchup an plan to start putting it together in the next few weeks. i have a picture of the layout attached to this post.

basically what i was thinking is everyone has built the broken an busted version of the hive city. but what about the parts of the hive that aren't trashed an forgotten? i mean necromunda is full of factories, housing, refinerys, technology, etc etc... so my thought were to make a board thats kinda like the center of trade... where houses would come to purchase an sell technology, weapons, slaves, food, mechinery, resources, an whatever else some one could get a little credit for. that said, it would also be a place were many of the houses and rival gangs would be forced to meet an interact because of all the trade an business. i was thinking the boad would be split into different sections where most of a specific house would be located. with the arbitors in the middle to kinda police the houses.

now i was looking for any kinda input anyone might have on making a board like this. thought, ideas, possible problems, things to keep in mind, things you might do with it, things you wouldn't want to do? any ideas on making the board FEEL like a hive city's center of trade?

Have you played Necromunda at all before?
As far as your layout goes i'd stagger the blocks/modular sections? a little.
Those 4ft long fire lanes are begging to be abused and although that could be fun for 1 or 2 games it will get boring quickly!

I'd suggest playing a few games in order to better understand what type/style of terrain works best and is most fun.
There is more than one reason that "everyone has built the broken an busted version of the hive city".
Not saying that it is not possible to build an intact Hive Block but the board tends to be more playable when it starts to become a bit chaotic, cluttered, irregular and especially taller!
Being shot/shooting people off S10 catwalks is imo one of the best things that can happen in Necromunda.

no i haven't played necromunda yet... but i've watch a few games at our local craft store and have been doing alot of research to find kinda what i'm looking for. now i'm going to be making the board modular, 16"x16" squares, 3 wide 3 deep... or however i feel like putting the together. now i haven't finished drawing up the plans just yet, but i was going to make most of the buildings open to run through to avoid some of the open line of site. and as far as taller, i guess it's hard to get a good idea of it from the picture, but the board is going to have 4 levels, with cat walks going up and down, over an under, this way an that way. an then to replace rubble that usually helps cut down on lines of site an what not i'm going to make a bunch of crates an barrels to place across the map. but you do have a very good point alex, it's a little to direct. i think necromunda is ment to be alot more maze like, where you cant walk a straight path to get anywhere. so i was thinking a way to solve this problem is to use pipes. have them coming up out of ground lvl and running into building cutting off a walk way. this does 2 things for me. 1 forces a player to go in and out and around so that it's more difficult to get anywhere, an 2 helps cut down on line of site so you don't get picked off from across the board.

but i'm going to keep working on my outline an post more pictures to give you a better idea of what i'm tring to do. keep me posted on any other thoughts you might have.

Yeah, that was what I was getting at really.
As long as you can get through the buildings, and across/over the streets in 8" that should work fine.
It'd be worth making some scatter terrain to sit in the streets.
Be it cars (burnt out or otherwise), skips, barricades (Arbite 'Aegis Defence' style or ramshackle rioter style) anything really just to break them up a bit.
I'd do a similar thing on the roofs while you are at it.
It would be possible to make a few bits of modular terrain (walls or buildings) that fit snugly within the streets to create some dead ends and close the fire lanes completely.

Try incorporating one or two standard measurements into the board say 6" and 8" and a couple of standard heights. Make this the distance between many of your buildings.
This will give you a good basis for modular stairs, bridges, pipework, ramps, building extensions etc etc (Hope this bit makes sense?)

Sounds exicitng whatever you do!
Make sure to post pics when you start working.

ok here's an update in how the outline is looking. i must admit that the more i work on this outline the more it's becoming an obsession. an so that you can get a better idea of how tall the board is going to be i color coded it. purple is ground lvl, red is the second lvl (3" from the base), blue is the third lvl (6" from base), and yellow is the fourth lvl (9" from base). the top of the center tower peeks at 12" from the base. so now that it's a little easier to see where i'm going with it, any thought for me?

First off, good to see Necromunda getting some lov., I've always enjoyed playing the game, I hope you will as well.

Second: While I like your idea, consider making the buildings less symmetrical, so the streets have to wind between them. Right now, you have a very nice cityfight board, but for Necromunda, the strees make huge firing lanes, especially with all the tall buildings in the corners that make for perfect castles for shooty gangs. Don't underestimate the power of overwatch! Also, sometimes in Necromunda one gang will start in the middle of the board. With your setup, they're virtually impossible to shift provided they have a few shooting skills.

Another critical ability in Necromunda (in our games anyway) was the ability to jum between building. In your setup, that may be rather hard; just pointing it out.

If you want to make it feel like a trade center, add some cargo vehicles loading bays, etc... Also, check out some real life industry parks on google maps; you'll notice that they're rarely built up in nice squares( here in Belgium they're not, anyway). Pipes can also help out. Also, pictures of docks might provide some nice inspiration.

Not to beat you down with the fluff-stick, but in the old Necromunda books, it stated the gangs stayed away from the 'official' side of things because the arbites forces patrolled diligently in these areas and because every house also has lots of security. They don't want some underhivers messing up the business... Even important underhive trading points had their own security forces, and there's a mutual agreement not to fight inside those places. Not to mention that in the underhive, nothing is in a good state anyway. Your region could just have been abondoned for some reason of course (cargo lifts breaking down, power supply problems, zombie plague... plenty of choice!).

Anyway, enough rambling, good luck with the board and I'll be following this with interest!

Sounds like you have some good ideas to start with.
I would echo those who say that even your later examples have too many wide open fire lanes.

If an industrial, but not yet totally ruined hive is what you are after, I'd check out Sean Patten's Necromundicon site. Especially the Gothic and industrial sections.

so here's they update on my progress so far. went out an got the foamcore an started making my first piece. it's coming along much better than i had hoped, but also i'm realizing it's going to take much longer as well. here are some pictures of what i've done so far... i'm trying to keep it well documented incase anyone might want to use this as a guide for themselves as well as to show just how amazing foamcore is if you've never used the stuff.

so i haven't glued anything together an i have one more level to add the the bottom before i attach it to the base, but so far it's coming together nicely. once i have it all glued down and most of the cutting done i'm going to all more of the fine detail to give it more of a realistic feel. but truethfully i'm not real sure what to add or make to give it a more real feel, or more necromunda like, an still maintain the feeling of a restored underhive dome. any thoughts?

couple more pictures, this time it's glued and has alot more details added. went to a couple different craft stores today, just shopping around for some ideas. got a couple good ones that i think will impress you guys. i'll keep you posted. an i don't want this to be a dead thread, with nothing but people stroking the ego saying "good work!" i really would like you guys to bounce ideas off me. anything you guys have thought might be cool or have always wanted to see on a game board, just throw it out there. cause i have alot more work to do an i want this board to incorperate as many cool ideas as i can cram on it. to do that having you guys give ideas and thought an suggestions will really help me get the creative juices flowing i think. so please feel free!

oh and i got a thought as i was reading through some of the forum thread and was curious to see what you guys thought about having a crane in the center of the board that moves an opperates and could be used to move boxes, barrels, bridges, ect, etc in the middle of a match? an i was going to use magnets to hold the crane to the board as well as for the actual lifting device. does anyone know of anyone that has done this? could be used to spice up the game play. also what about using gantry's all around the board, in place of gang ways? have them move at a set distance each players turn. now an interesting concept for the gantry thing is that a heavy can move and shoot because he's not actually moving, the gantry platform is... down side is you move 2" for each players turn tell you reach the other side. or something like that. any problems thoughts or threads you guys might have?

That is SOOOO Awesome!!! I have lots of love for Necromunda. That game and Gorkamorka were my first tabletop war games.
That board has me wanting to look for my old books... Anyway, back on topic...

I would add some cranes. Tower cranes are nice, but I like gantry cranes for terrain. Check out this Ebay listing:

Now, imagine that at this scale (40 Ton Gantry Crane), probably about 2-3 feet tall.

Imagine the possibilities to have the terrain weave in and out of that thing. Being able to jump from gantry to building or catwalk... Now, that would be sick...
That would also be LOOOOOTS of work, but it would be truly awesome.

I've got a toy JCB crane waiting in the wings to be built into terrain.
It's about 3.5 ft tall and is fully remote controllable.
When I get round to it, it should be a really fun centrepiece.

Ruleswise it is very much possible to incorporate cranes, lifts, automatic doors/fences, loading platforms, conveyor belts etc into Necromunda.
Just have a play around and see what works for you.

Edit: Oh yeah, the terrain is looking great so far. Just make sure to cram as much detail onto it as possible. It may seem like a bit of a chore now but you'll thank yourself later when it comes to the painting stage.

Munda,

Take screen from an old window or go to a hardware store and get it but glue it to the floor of the second story to make a grate-like effect on the floors.

Also, find a way to make sand bags that would look neat in some areas, also barb-wire which I have found taking a thin gauge wire cutting 2 equal lengths and twisting them together. Then wrap it around a pen to give it the spiral effect.

way ahead of you on that one shino. i cut a huge T out of my second level and glued faomcore under it so that the floor is sunk in. then i put a bunch of dowels in it so that it looks like pipes. i got the screen yesterday and i'm going to cut it out and put it over the sunk in areas to make a see through flooring . and instead of sand bags i'm going to make a gak load of barrels and crates to stack all over the game board.

I NEED INTERRIOR DESIGN IDEAS!! i'm at a complete stand still in designing the insides of the different buildings. please some one give me some ideas to play with! think bars, weapons depots, maket place, gang hidout.

and for anyone that likes modeling of anykind i found a site that is AMAZING!!! it's gotta be in the top 5 modeling sites i've come across. it's www.plastruct.com. i'm telling you, you can use this site on almost every project you take on. short of fantasy terrain it think. but seriously check it out!!!!

Looking good so far.

Not dissing your idea, but just thought it would be worth mentioning that the reason that most Necromunda terrain is based around the battered and forgotten parts of the Hive is that this (the Underhive, the run-down and forgotten section on which the rest of the hive sits) is where the game is actually set, rather than in the Hive itself.

Having said that, there's no reason that sections of the Underhive couldn't have been prettied up a little into the sort of trade centre you're suggesting.

actually i had thought about that already insaniak, but the lower hive and the underhive has no real clear border or cut off, plus the underhive and hive are always changing because of disease, collapsed domes, etc, etc... so i'm going to guess the best markets, the most guilders, and best restored domes in the underhive are going to be located on that ever changing border between hive and underhive. so i'm sure there is plenty of fighting and turf wars up at the border because thats going to be the best turf and the most profitable. so the terrain i'm making is still going to look like the slums... but it's going to be the difference between a red neck trailer park and an ethiopian village. if that makes sense. that said, here's some more pictures.
