I'm in the mood to model something goofy so I'm going to do an Inquisitor Haruhi Suzumiya. I think I could use an SOB head for her but I'm not sure what body to go with, any suggestions? This is going to be a just for fun piece. (Though I may occasionally bust her out as the CO of my IG)

Doing a head swap with one of the witchhunter bodies would be good, as the top hats on those guys are kinda goofy.

famous anime character noted as an alternate for God. Also has a giant 'I can get away with anything' ego.

Not to thread-jack, but can anybody explain to me the American youth's infatuation with Japanese anime? To me, it's like being infatuated with French Impressionism. Its just a foreign style of art, right?

It's trendy and kind of different from American animation, and often perceived as being more "mature" because some of it is aimed at older audiences. As an animator I loathe about 99% of it though, as the animation is usually more limited than anything from Williams Street. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was 12 though.

My feelings towards anime aside, I think the idea for a Japanese schoolgirl Inquisitor to be pushing things a little too far. I think Hasslefree makes a schoolgirl model, but I'm not sure. I've seen models for such before though.

Its pretty basic . Its a medium used to tell a story , one that doesnt require a whole filming set or actors , or props.
Because its just a medium , its not limited to your Pokemons or Yugi Ohs , it can be anything.

Just like we cant simply throw all 30mins - 1 hour shows as The OC

no , we have things like CSI , or Family Guy

Stuff ported over to the US, yeah. About 99 percent of it is spiky haired spunky kids fighting against an effeminate bad guy over the course of 300+ episodes. A lot of it stays in Japan.

And Luna, your comment on anime being a medium used to tell a story can apply to Western animation, books, comics...

This whole discussion feels like a powder keg to me.

I wasn't thinking of literally making a school girl inquisitor, I'd 40K her and the retinue up. I'll sketch some ideas and see if anyone's seen any models like that or could be converted to it. Right now I'm thinking something long the lines of a skirted girl in a Comissar's coat (with a red 'Ultra Inquisitor' arm band on the left arm) with hat in hand, big boots and probably some kind of ridiculously over-sized power weapon, or maybe just pointing. And yelling "Attack!"

Hmm.... waist down from Warrior Woman (Last Chancers), right arm from a tanker (pointing), head from a SOB... I think that's a good start.

As for my thoughts on anime, I don't actually go looking for anime in particular but if something amuses me I'll watch it whether it's western or Japanese. This show amuses me to no end.

For Simplicity try to get the SOB head from the Imolator, it's plastic. Or there's probably a company that sells better heads anyway.
Maybe a Daemon Hunter Inquisitor would work best, look over the rules, makes more sense than the Witch Hunters one.

It caters to a market who prefer animation to live-action and prefer animation that isn't idiotic comedy. Lost and Heroes are good and all, but some people don't really like live action. Tom and Jerry is fun and all, but it's not going to get you to do any heavy thinking. The DCAU and the like are a step in the right direction, but they're limited to one genre. Anime can be a wide range of genres and it can cater to anyone's preference. You want typical episodic teen adventure story? Shounen is for you. You want a romance? Try Shoujo, or if you're interesting in gay romance, try Shounen-Ai or Shoujo-Ai. Like giant robots? You can have the optimistic Gurren Lagann or the depressing Neon Genesis Evangelion. Want something dealing with a bleak look at the world? A seinen such as Narutaru is your type. Want emos? Enjoy your Naruto.

I suppose it could be likened to having an infatuation with French Impressionism. However French Impressionism isn't marketed at all ages and all genres, nor are the youth particularly fond of paintings, which explains why you hear little about them.

There's more to anime than the fairly simplistic 2BAMASTA or Save-the-world plotline that the typical Shounen follow. It just so happens that as the American distributors don't recognise animation as being for anyone other than kids, only those anime appealing to kids are brought over, and the heavier issues are almost always somewhat censored (e.g. Death, homosexuality and strangely, blood). This gives the impression that all anime is this shallow, when really it has far more depth. The youth are using the internet more and more, so global relations are getting better and better. This gives them ready access to subtitled videos of uncensored anime of their choice.

The plotline of many anime is superior to much of what youths who dislike live action in America have access to. Firstly, let's rule out books, because books don't have animation. Secondly, all movies are limited to a 2 hour period, which isn't long enough to give an in-depth plot. TV shows are live action, which can easily be a victim of bad acting, and bad effects are guaranteed unless it's high budget. Also, tv shows have to be watched on TV, while anime is always downloaded online, so is far more convenient to watch.

So, have I put forward a decent enough explanation for why anime is popular?

Moral of the story: Just do your damn homework first. Is the second season even out in the US? All I could find was the first season.

So anyway, on topic-
Ultra Inquisitor- Haruhi
Gun Servitor- Mikuru
Henchman (& Other Unpleasant Tasks)- Kyon
Psyker- Itsuki

What do you want these figures to look like? Do you want them to look like the original characters?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I didn't leave out Nagato as much as it is I'm not quite sure how to use her yet.

For appearances I'm taking this one piece at a time, first Haruhi since the retinue revolves around her then whichever one seems like it'd be easiest to 40K.

As for looking like the original characters, I'm shooting for 'reasonable facsimile', for example the inqusitor would have short brown hair with an orange hair band and a red arm band to definitely denote Haruhi. As for how they're dressed it'd be 40K style, since a Japanese school girl inquisitor would be a bit much to field. But a Japanese schoolgirl in a Comissar's coat looking like she's screaming 'attack!' would be hilarious. To me anyway. I amuse easy.

I'm not up on the details on the others yet but Yuki will have the witche's hat and maybe Starring Inferno.

I'll have a Haruhi sketch up soon to give y'all an idea of exactly what I'm shooting for.

I also want to say thanks for the interest so far and I'm hoping to get this thing started in earnest soon. I'm on a small island with no hobby shops so I need to figure out exactly what parts I need to create this figure before ordering.

If you're going to ask for modelling advice for anything obscure you should really post pics or links or what you're going for.

As for the question of why anime/manga has taken off in the west, well it's been building since VCRs became common, we had anime clubs in my high school and college (late 80s early 90s) usually 3rd generation copies with a Japanese-American student to translate.

Japan never really put animation or comic books into the kid's box and always had less stringent censorship policies than the US (can't speak to Europe etc). So they were free to explore more mature themes, they could do galaxy-spanning wars where people actually died. Not just extras but main characters. Even when I was in elementry school (now we're talking late 70s) we'd all hurry home to see Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) for just that reason. It was better than any animation on TV.

One difference is most books in Japan are creator-owned and have a single vision while most in the US are corporate owned and the only vision is to run the property into the ground and make as much money as possible. Not to say the US doesn't produce some great stuff, my SNOWPOCALYPSE entertainment is the old Batman Animated Series, but those are some reasons Japanese stuff has become so popular.
