Ok, this is my new idea for a plasma cannon.

Name Range S AP Type
Plasma bolt 36” 7 2 Heavy 2
Plasma grenade 24” 7 2 Heavy 1, Large blast
Plasma Auto fire 12” 6 2 Heavy 10, pinning, rending, Gets hot!*
Plasma cannon 48” 7 2 Heavy 1, blast
Immolator 6” 7 2 Heavy 20 Gets hot!**
Hyper immolator 6” 10 1 Heavy 25, gets hot!***
All fire modes get gets hot, with the following exceptions:
*: overheats on a 2-
**: overheats on a 3-
***: overheats on a 4-.

I'd say, in a tactical squad, 50 points due to it's immense fire posibilities.
NB: for overheats on a 3-, if a tactical marine may hit on a 3+, but if he hits on a 3, he will still get a shot from it, even if he has to roll gets hot.

I thought Sustained was supposed to be the lower power but relatively safe setting?

So something more like:
Sustained: R36" Str 5 Ap 4 Heavy 3

Jackmojo is right that it is supposed to be safer. And I really like this idea.

So maximal is a current plasma cannon, sustained is Str 6 Ap 3 Heavy 3.

Would have to test that out a little bit but I'm pretty sure that you could get away with the sustained for a minor points increase, say +5 to the point cost of a plasma cannon.

No, again OTT. The reason you are allowed to take many different weapons is because no one weapon can do it all. If the plasma cannon had this many options thats all people would run aside from maybe a lascannon for anti-tank. Either way this is just too much.

I think that the option to also be a heavy bolter is itself worth about 5 points, so I'd vote in favor of one less shot (2) so its not always better then the Heavy Bolter in every way. I wouldn't want to see any weapon be always outclassed.

What about using Necro's HPG as a guide?

Low Energy:
Range 0-20 20-40 S:7 DamD3 Sv:-2

High Energy:
Range 0-20 20-72 S:10 DamD6 Sv:-6

All have no to hit mods, 4+ ammo, Blast, High Impact.
High enery needs a turn to recharge.


Could give something like:
Low: 24 7 2 Heavy1, Blast, Gets Hot
High: 48 9 1 Heavy1, Blast, Gets Hot, Slow Firing


Or if you want the current mode to be the best:

Low: 24 4 3 Heavy4
High 36 7 2 Heavy1, Blast

@Solon: They are referring to the Necromunda Heavy plasma cannon (also known as HPG and in current 40k as 'plasma cannon').

In pre-3rd edition 40k, it had two firing modes.
Lower power (less chance of exploding) and more shots but no blast.
Higher S shot with blast (and can blow up in your face.)

It would see, that of the ideas you seem to think are new many are based off old ideas now discarded.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

You get an AP2 large blast, a railgun on crackroids, everything else....

How do you even decide these ideas are feasible? Honestly. We're here to decide on something balanced and thought out fully.

Anyone who seriously thinks tactical squads should be able to fire 25 plasma shots in one turn should be thinking about balance a bit more.
