Hey!
I had a little blog thing up for my Crimson Fists a while back there, who are still coming on, but I want to start a fresh thread for my Howling Griffon half of the Army.
Hopefully I'll get this completed soon and get lots of pics up regularly.
So far Ive painted 1 Marine in a step by step manner to show how I achieved a simple but effective finish for a troop model (I spend a little less time on things which come in numbers as Im a fond gamer and like to play with painted armies), in a relatively short period of time.
Sorry about the bad photos, but I'll borrow my friends digital slr in future!
Just painted Iyanden Darksun and Mechite Red over a black basecoat. (I love foundation paints as they are beautifully rich and tough). Takes a bit of care to paint the straight lines but its not too bad. (the most difficult part is actually the nose!) lol
After painting the silver bits Chainmail, I put a black wash all over the model, using careful strokes across surfaces, and filling all recesses.
I highlighted with a mix of Iyanden again on the yellow, then red gore on the red, after with a mix of Iyanden and Sunburst on the yellow and blood red on the red. I highlighed the silver bits with Mithril.
Then I added rust effect to the metal, using tin blitz highlighted with brazen brass in areas on the silver. The eyes were built up in layers from a mix of scaly green and goblin green, adding more goblin and white. I made the lower legs muddy Using firstly a mud wash, then painted the base Calthan brown and used that on the feet as I was doing so. I put little flecks on the lower leg and feet with a mix of calthan and black then washed again with devlin mud. Finally washed the base with devlin mud and added swirly detail whilst still wet with badab black.
Just something simple but nice for the troops, much more to come!
Here is the full force, (although I want to buy a predator, a terminator assault squad and possibly 2 rhinos when I have the cash!)
I will probably use this thread to post some stuff from my Crimson Fists as they come on too, as they are a joint army.
Thanks for reading!
edit; Just took off most of those first pictures as they are too terrible to count for anything.

Heres a quick glance at my 95% finished Captain. Just got to finish highlighting the gold and then stick him on his scenic base.
Again I had to use my camera phone so I'll leave the explanation of colour layering etc til I get a better photo up, but when I get a few more things done, I'll get some proper photos taken.

Looking very good, all in all. Picture quality is improving and the marine looks nice and gritty (HGs look pants if they're too bright).
I am not a fan of the sword though. It looks half painted. Not sure the effect you're looking for there has worked.

I'll try and get a whole load more done so that when I get a use of that camera the whole thing will pick up momentum and then I may at some stage actually be finnished!

Still cant get use of a good camera which is fustrating, but Im in process of mounting him on a base.
Im going with the chaos'y theme as I think the HG's fought in the Badab war, which involves a chaos rebellion. Is that right? Automatically Appended Next Post: Got the Captain finished!
Just gotta touch up the bottom of the base, and still have to touch up the gold when I can afford a tub of burnished gold :(
The base terrain Im trying to go for is supposed to be a bit like in Lord of the Rings at the end of the two towers, all red and dry, caked earth.

Ok. Got some photo's back from my friend of Pedro Kantor.
This is how I hope to get whole army photographed. Looks pretty cool I think, but cuz of the quality of the photo you can realy see my mistakes. The camera's got better eyesight than I have! lol

92% of teens have moved on to rap. If you are one of the 8% who still listen to real music, copy and paste this into your sig.
95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell jump! |

Yea Im gonna touch up Kantor again I think. Bot up to scratch anymore.
I built a Librarian last night. Still havent been to bed yet!
Also, here is the entire army that Im trying to paint!
Crimson Fist on the left, Howling griffons on the right. (many models to be re-undercoated yet.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Can anyone give any clarification on whether Orlando Furioso is the Master, or the Librarian?
From what I gather he is a deceased master, but there is a Librarian in terminator armour with the howling griffons, but I have been told that Orlando was a librarian?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I have now clarified that Orlando Furioso is a legendary figure of mythology, and therefore that name was used for the howling griffons chapter master, and that Chief Librarian Mercaeno saved his geneseed and all that madness. Anyway, it just means that my captain is now Master Orlando Furioso (banner will be changed), and my librarian is now Chief Librarian Mercaeno (will be adjusted to wield a force axe rather than staff).
I was wondering about the modelling of Orlando, but the mythological figure rode on a griffon carrying a sword and spear, which isnt really transferrable, so Im having him with a relic blade and a storm bolter, and he can damn well ride in a decorative rhino and be pleased of it!

Well its been a hell of a long time since I last posted on this, partially to do with the fact that I dont spend enough time painting, and partially because of the lack of good digital camera's in my posession! So I just thought, frak that, I will take them with my 35mm SLR and see how they come out when developed on CD, and I got them today!
So much more painting still to do, but you can see the progress a little anyhow.
Still havent changed the name on the banner to Orlando Furioso and typically it was too sunny and over exposed, but here he is! (still got to paint the black over the bottom of the base too.
Heres my apothecary. Im actually really pleased with him. Havent done anything but the 1st layers of yellow and red on the rest of the command squad tho.
This is my WIP Librarian (Merceano). I want to achieve a highly detailed but subtle electric storm sort of effect on his armour and something similar only less subtle on his axe. Your can see how Im building the colours up from foundations then washes then lighter tones.
And finally, just to show you my stages of technique on this larger item; the 1st layer of colour on my rhino. Im leaving the scuffs black and painting varying concentrations of colour to achieve the dirty potentially rusting look. (the walls from the library level in goldeneye Nintendo 64 in mind!)
So a little more has been done, but theres still so much more to do. Hopefully Ill get a good deal more done and developed in a week or two, now that Ive realised I can actually photo the stuff fairly cheap.
If anyone has any good advice on taking photos of models with a 35mm I would be greatful to hear it!
