Now I am starting Fantasy and am trying to build towards a 1500 point list for a tournament in July. Now, unlike my 40K army, I am planning it out before I buy. This is a list that a friend who knows little of Dwarfs but decently about Fantasy and me, an utter Fantasy noob, made. I am looking to fine tune this as quick as possible because I'm a slow painter, and need to paint.

Thane-142 points
Shield, Master Rune of Alaric the Mad, Rune of Cleaving, Rune of Stone

Thane-112 points
Shield, Master Rune of Spite

Runesmiths-147 points
Shield, Master Rune of Balance, Rune of Striking, Rune of Preservation

Organ Gun-120 points

Grudge Thrower-155 points
Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Fortune, Rune of Penetrating

Cannon-160 points
Rune of Forging, Master Rune of Immolation, Rune of Burning

20 Hammerers-320 points
Shield, Musician, Standard Bearer, Gatekeeper, Rune of Courage

10 Thunderers-150 points
Shields

10 Thunderers-150 points
Shields
Total-1456

The runesmith doesn't really need three spellbreakers in 1500 points. At that level, I'd say you could get away with none.

It's often good to go with a unit of each rather than two of the same for core shooters. Gives a little more flexibility. You haven't noted it, but you've paid for shields, which is a good call.

The ironbreakers are attractive for their save, but generally hammerers are a better deal. Stubborn, especially when immune to fear and terror is great.

Your first thane is just fine for a general, though not necessarily the way I go. Your second isn't that good a build. You could put a rune of stone on him to bump him to a 1+/4+ and use him to tie up enemy characters. If you have points, you could even give him rune of resistance or preservation to boot. My preference would be a build that includes a great weapon on him, which is great value for some hard hitting attacks.

Normally I'd recommend a BSB, but you only really have one combat unit, so you might get away without it. I'd also think about an oathstone, though this will mean only one character can drop in your single fighting block.

I also think your war machines don't need all the runes they have. Rune of forging and burning on the cannon is great. Rune of accuracy is about mandatory on the grudgethrower, and burning or penetrating if you really, really want it.

With all the cuts, you might look in to a small unit of warriors (10 w/shields and musician) to help guard your warmachines. They won't kill much, but can help see off fast cav and such, which can struggle to hurt them.

There's some thoughts to get you started. Will you be playing against particular enemies, or all comers? Do you plan to head towards tournament play, or do you expect to be mostly club-style?

Anyhow, good luck, and keep us posted.

This is going to be built for a tournament with occasional fun games since the Fantasy crowd is small, and 40K is more of my for fun game, with occasional tournies.

I like Zeke's advice. I would also recommend dropping a bunch of the runes on your war machines for another warrior block. I would also switch to hammerers w/ shields for the stubborn on them. Since you won't be moving and shooting, having the 30" range on quarrellers could help you out, so having one and one would be good. I agree that second thane could use the rune of stone and resistance, oh and GW. A rerollable 2+ AS and 4+ ward save pretty much means he is going to be sticking around to swing the GW. I have been toying with the idea of MR of steel and rune of might for a thane build also. That is one of the cool things about the dwarfs, is that you can create so many different builds. Also you already have 5 DD so I don't think 3x spellbreakers are needed, maybe just one. I am not too sure how often I used one in my 1500 point games. I have never used the grudge thrower, just because I have always chosen the cannon over it and my other choice is always 2 bolt throwers. For some reason, I feel safer with some war machines that can't misfire, granted I usually miss anyway. You can get 2 bolt throwers w/ engineers, and one rune of burning and one rune of penetration for the 5 points less that your current grudge thrower. However those points should be used for that other combat unit. I also think an oathstone is a great idea, especially if you only have one combat unit, granted you will only have one character in it then. Anyway, that is my advice too, pretty much the same as Zeke's.

Do you already have some of these models and are you trying to limit the expense too?

Well, so far I have the BfSP starter and an organ gun, though I am not concerned too much with price, since I can get a good amount by July.

Well, I went through and changed my Runesmiths equipment, as well as switching Ironbeards for Hammerers. I am still looking at what to do with the rest of the units, as well as squeezing in more units.
Also, how important is it for Dwarfs to have Ward saves?
