I have been trying to improve my brushwork drastically, and even more so now that I am painting my chaos army for tourny use. i am satisfied with the blue ink wash on my night lords so far, however on certain pieces such as vehicles, I really want to create that worn, dirty, battletorn look for areas on my tanks and dreads, i was thinking it would look best on the tracks/track guards and leg areas of a walker. what colors should I use/mix/drybrush? can anyone show me an easy and effective way of creating this desired effect? advice or tutorials would be greatly appreciated

There are a bunch of weathering tutorials up over at my gaming groups blog - http://www.thehogsofwar.com/search/label/weathering

The biggest tip that I have is to distress the model before priming it. This gives you something to work with that has built in depth already added.

Another really neat produc is Migs Rust Effects and Grim - http://migproductions-usa.com/index.php/pigments/washes-effects.html

This stuff is really neat and super easy to use. Worth checking out.

Thanks for the links, the sponge technique looks simple enough, I think I will try that on the next tank I paint

An easy way is too do a light wash of smoke from the vallajo line of paints , chestnut ink was awesome for that too but GW no longer makes it . You can even add a light coat of the green wash after the smoke wash .

I do it the color I wanted to and then I make a rust color by mixing. I do a very very light coat of that with another of the original metal on top then another layer. gives it a light rust color that provides a weathered effect.

My cheap and quick method is Badab Black on Boltgun Metal to make it dirty, then Gryphonne Sepia to make it rusty, then drybrush Mithril Silver on the edges to make it worn.

Near exhausts, apply a wash of ogryn flesh for a real dirty look. Then , drybrush some black on the very edge of the exhausts.

If brute force doesn't help, you're not applying enough!
