Right, I've decided to start my first WFB army and want to sound out this list with some of you older hands to see if it's viable. So far I've only had a intro game at the local GW so my knowledge of the rules isn't brilliant, but i think this list looks like fun

Heroes

Vampire - Red Fury, war banner - 175pts

Vampire - Forbidden Lore, Summon Ghouls, Book of Arkham - 185pts

Necromancer - Extra spell, Corpse cart (Lodestone), Sceptre de Noirot - 195 pts

Core

20xCrypt ghouls - Ghast - 168pts

20xCrypt ghouls - Ghast - 168pts

Special

20xGrave guard - FC, Royal standard of Strigos - 305pts

3xFell Bat - 60pts

3xFell Bat - 60pts

Rare

Varghulf - 175pts

Total - 1490pts

The first Vampire goes in with the grave guard, while the second goes in with some of the ghouls. I figure that I'll have enough power dice to raise large amounts of zombies to tie up my opponents nastier stuff while my hammer units (Grave guard and Varghulf) can go to town on the troops. I put the fell bats in to give me something to hold up flank attacks with and maybe go and kill some warmachine crew!

For your vampire with forbidden lore I would grab an additional magic level instead. Currently you only have 5 power dice in your army so an extra power dice should help a lot. Keep in mind that against an army with a scroll caddy they will have 3 dispel dice minimum which can ruin your day. You can always substitute one of the spells you rolled for raise dead so grabbing forbidden lore on a lvl 1 vampire is a bit overkill. You may also want to look at swapping your banner of strigos for banner of the barrows. While Strigos may work better on the first round of combat, the banner of the barrows applies to any round of combat so if you get into a long fight with a unit like black guard, the banner of the barrows will start to shine.

Thanks mon Regrettably the intro game didn't touch on the magic side of things at all. One of the regulars in the shop gave me a quick rundown of how it works, and that it was very important in a VC army. Good point about the banner too.

Is the core of the army ok? Do i have enough of the basic troops or will i be getting wiped out too quickly for my summoned zombies to have any effect?

It really comes down to what your opponent is using. Against most shooting your ghouls should be fine since most crossbows and bows are only str 3 so the toughness 4 helps a lot. Magic is kinda tricky, its really comes down to what people play at your local store. Between my store and my friends we tend to go magic heavy. If your running into magic heavy armies swapping the lodestone to balefire fire really helps shelter your army against magic attacks. If you find your magic phase gets stuffed by an opponenent might want to turn your std bearer vampire into another lvl 2 caster with a staff of damnation or black periapt
