Hello all!
I have started 40k recently with a friend. I have always been interested in the aesthetics of SW and after splitting a AoBR set with my friend I decided I would convert them and buy the SW battle force. The BF is on it's way now.
We have played a couple of starter games but decided to aim for 1k for our first armies. He is sticking with Orks. I still have a lot to learn about playing marines so I would like general advice on what to get for a 1k army.
Do I buy Razorbacks? I see those for some lists. What are good things to buy for a 1k list, that I can use later once we move up to 1750 and maybe beyond? I'm sure after I play a bunch of 1k I'll understand better, but before then I'd really appreciate advice.
Thanks, keep in mind I have AoBR Marines + SW Battleforce.

How about:
Rune Priest - Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane - 100
Dreadnought - Multi Melta, DCCW w/Storm Bolter - 105
Wolf Scouts - Melta Gun, Mark of the Wulfen - 100
Grey Hunters (10) - 2x Melta Gun, Mark of the Wulfen, Drop Pod - 205
Grey Hunters (10) - Flamer, Plasma Gun, Rhino - 185
Grey Hunters (5) - Plasma Gun, Rhino - 120
Blood Claws (10) - Flamer, Rhino - 185
1000
You'd need to buy:

Hey another newb spacewolf! nice to see I'm not alone.
i agree with Antelope, you NEED rhinos- you just don't assault without them! also, a bit of advice- wolf standards are simply amazing. 10 points for rerolling all ones in assault? that's invaluable.
As far as higher points go, but razorbacks instead of rhinos- you get tons of extra bits, and can run them as rhino or razorback. Also buy a vindicator or two- I love them!

Yeah, buy Razors but run them as Rhinos.
Rhinos are better for nearly everything as they have fire points.
@Vindicators - there not that great. If you want to run them effectily, you need 3 of them to prevent them dieing T1. And if you have 3, you don't have slots for the better HS choices, such as Long Fangs.

I have AoBR marines and SW battleforce in my army as well. You can do some nice conversions with AoBR from SW pack. Let me know if you want to see mine. Let's look at your options (without upgrades):
AoBR
Captain (Wolf Lord) - 100
Tac Squad (Grey Hunters ) - 150 pts I would personally just stick to Grey Hunters for troop choice
Terminators (Wolf Guard) - 165 pts
Dreanought - 105 pts
SW Battleforce
20 Grey Hunters - 300pts
5 Scouts - 150 pts
Drop Pod - 35 pts
1005 points
This is a sizable force in a 1000pt list, however it lacks firepower, i.e. power fists, meltaguns, MoTW, etc. Given what you have right now, what I would recommend you do is to cut back one a pack or two, or even parts of packs, to add upgrades. Depending on how many units you want is entirely up to you, but you should play around with the points a bit. Here are a few simple tips you should keep in mind as a SW player:
2nd weapon upgrade is free when GH pack is 10
running weapons in pairs offers maximum efficiency, e.g. 2 meltas, 2 plasmas, etc. (I personally run 2 meltas for each of my GH pack. perfect for tank hunting)
MotW = D6+1 rending attacks (a must for every GH squad.. even scouts)
1 Wolf Guard can join any pack (limited to scouts) during deployment; however, The 10GH+1WG pack may not enter the Rhino anymore, so use this wisely.
Here is my suggestion to you:
If you are fine with having only two full packs of Grey Hunters (1 from SW bforce and 1 from AoBR), don't assembled the other 10 as Grey Hunters. Instead, maybe make 5 wolf guard units to your customization. Save the other 5 for a future squads, such as Long Fangs, if you will. Instead of having 5 Space Wolves'd out guys, mix the body parts from the devatstor pack and your remaining 5 to get 10 guys that all have a SW look to them. Also, you can use the 5 WG as a pack itself, or distribute them to lead other packs.
Recommended products to buy next:
You're definitely going to need transport to get those GH/WG packs in your enemies face because, well, assault is what were best at! Rhinos Drop Pods are imperative. As Antelope mentioned, buy Razorbacks just incase you want to run smaller packs. If not, you can just use them as rhinos. If you want more firepower, get some Long Fangs. I run 1 lascannon and 3 missile launchers. It is very cheap yet very effective. You can switch out your AoBR missile launcher and put him in long fangs pack since your GH cannot carry one. Then you're only going to have to search for one more missile launcher if you want to run more than two. If you want a fun HQ, a Rune Priest would be your next HQ choice. Nothing is better than experimenting your psychic powers on your enemy. Plus, it is better to learn how each psychic power works sooner than later. Rune Priests are a popular choice for competitive play, and who knows, you might end up getting a second.
Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, ask me. I will try to answer what I can. Enjoy!

All this advice has been great. Unfortunately I jumped the gun and already bought Rhino's before I saw the posts recommending Razorbacks. :( I get my force today as well as my 3 rhino's and I'm excited to paint and try converting my AoBR marines. I already green stuffed some pelts onto a couple, hopefully it looks okay. I'd like to see your converts if you don't mind kenneydee

It's often quite easy to find loose razorback turrets on bits service webplaces. And it's not like it's a bad thing to be able to transport big squads either :-)
And all advice here is sound!

It seems like i have 1 melta in this whole battleforce + AoBR, Am I correct? I am kinda just eying the sprues as I am not super familiar on what everything looks like.
I ended up being able to cancel my rhino's and get razorbacks!
I have cut most off the stuff off the sprues now and want to assemble. Just confused about missing things like melta's. Might have leave some armless I guess until I find some.
Edit: Melta's x1 are like 6$ a piece at warstore, seriously? Sheesh..

Ya, I know your frustration with the the space wolves boxes, it comes with no meltas, no flamers, and way to many plasma guns. I paid 35 dollars for a 10 man unit and I can't even make it by the codex rules without buying bitz that aren't sold at my comic shop. (in Alaska there is no GW shop)

You can make your own melta guns wihtout too much trouble. The important part is the nozzle. Here is how I did it, and I am far from a skilled modeller: Get greenstuff. Roll it into a long "sausage", of about the same thickness as a melta nozzle. Mark it up into parts that are about as long as a melta nozzle. Let it harden a little. Use a very sharp point to draw the four horisontal lines that makes it look like a melta. Do these four lines on both sides of the "sausage", between every set of marks. Let it all harden overnight. Then cut it up where the marks are. You will get a lot of melta nozzles, some will probably not look good and you are going to have to throw them away. The ones that look good, you can just mount on any guns body. Just remember to cut away the magazine if there is one.
Look at this picture and you will see what I mean with the four horisontal lines:

Good luck!
