I building a SW army. I have the codex and Armybuilder and I'm trying to decide how to build squads. I see that it lists:Bolt Pistol x9, Close Combat Weapon x9, Bolter x9. So Do i decide on the distribution of Bolters or Bolt Pistol + CCW? If so does anyone have a recommended distribution for a Grey Hunter x10 Pack? I'm building 2 packs and I'm pretty confused on how this works. I am not seeing anything in the Codex.

The grey hunters have both a bolter, bolt pistol, and a CCW to start with. When you take a special weapon like a flamer, meltagun, and Plasmagun that replaces the bolter. If you take a plasma pistol then it replaces the bolter pistol. and if you take a power fist or power weapon then it replaces the CCW. So usually I run 10 grey hunters with two meltaguns, one PF, one MOTW, and a wolf standard. This is a strong group that can handle most anything pretty well. So when your building you can put either a bolter or bolt pistol and CCW on 7 of them one with a banner of some sort (you should have like 3 to choose from. 2 with special weapons, one with a bolt pistol and PF or PW, and one as MOTW which has a bolter or bolt pistol/CCW. The MOTW guy is the only one you will really have to work on because they really dont give you the pieces to make someone being taken over by the geneseed so that you can kinda do what you feel is right.

That clears up things pretty well for the most part, however there is still one part that I'm confused about. If you basically answered this question in your response I'm sorry, I just need clarification. I guess it stems from the WYSIWYG nature of Warhammer 40k.

You saw that they both have a bolter, bolt pistol and a CCW. Obviously they have two hands so the option is Bolt Pistol + CCW or Bolter + CCW without buying any upgrades correct?

I know that if you go Bolt Pistol + CCW then you basically get 2 assault attacks. Because a pistol counts as a 1 handed weapon, as does the CCW.

If I go Bolter then I get 1 Assault attack, but longer range and and Rapid Fire.

Is this correct so far?

If this is true, I notice most people will go with something close to your distribution:

2x Melta
1x Powerfist
1x Standard
(also MOTW which I can use green stuff or extra bits to show that a marine has it)

So Assuming I have this loadout this is what I would have:

1. Marine with Melta
2. Marine with Melta
3. Marine with Bolt Pistol and Powerfist
4. Marine with ???
5. Marine with ???
6. Marine with ???
7. Marine with ???
8. Marine with ???
9. Marine with ???
10. Marine with ???

1 would include MOTW and one would have a standard.

If I am correct in my assumptions, what would you recommend as far as a loadout of the last 7 soldiers?

Also, does the standard take up an arm slot? Like would I have to replace a CCW or something?

Thank you!

Its assumed that both the bolt pistol and CCW is in holsters if the grey hunter is holding a bolter and visa versa if he has a bolt pistol/CCW. it is the wargear that they always have unless you change out for something else. Also the MOTW guy has all this too he just doesnt use it in CC so you can have him with a pistol still.

Basically this. To clarify a bit further (Just thought your explanation was slightly murky) every normal model is assumed to have the third or second/third weapon tucked away somewhere, most likely in a holster. However, you can always use all three weapons at any given moment in the game (Bearing in mind that you can only fire one per turn, and can't assault after firing bolters). Essentially, they're holding the bolter for most of the time (AFAIK, they are the only marines to actually get a one-handed bolter model - not counting GKs, obviously, who use wrist-mounted guns) and when things move in close, they tuck the bolter on their back or somewhere, and rip out the chainsword and pistol.

In rules terms: all Grey Hunters always (Disregarding special weapons) have all three weapons on hand, no matter the circumstances, regardless of what is modeled on the actual model. Space Marines are in a similar way, as they carry a Bolter and Bolt Pistol (with no CCW) by default. WYSIWYG can only go so far; it's obviously quite hard to model three weapons on one model unless you're running tentacle Chaos.

Except when they take a meltagun or any other special weapon then that replaces the bolter.

So if you replace the bolter with a special weapon, then essentially you are also replacing the bolt pistol as well?

Nope you still have the pistol and CCW, only thing that replaces the pistol is the plasma pistol.

If you take the plasma pistol does it replace the bolter as well?

Also, is there a section in the rule book I should be look at for this? I don't remember seeing it anywhere.

No, plasma pistol replaces bolt pistol (pistol replace pistol) its in the part of the book that shows point cost for everything on grey hunters.

This question seems to pop up all the time, try using the search function instead of starting a new thread. There should really be a YMDC FAQ thread where these sorts of basic questions can be collated.

Anyway, page 89 of the Space Wolves codex is pretty clear about how weapon upgrades work, I suggest reading it over a couple of times. Essentially every model in the squad comes with the items noted in the Wargear list, which can then be replaced in certain ways as per the Options list. For example, one model can replace his bolter with a Meltagun, so he no longer has a bolter, but he still has his Bolt Pistol, CCW, Frag and Krak grenades etc.

I had actually did some searches in google and on the forums to no avail. Perhaps I wasn't using the correct string though.

Also, I'll re-read page 89. Normally I'm good with rules but seeing as this is my 2nd war-game I feel like knowing the rules of the first (quite a different system)it's almost putting me at somewhat of a disadvantage learning these new rules.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Edit: Okay, I see the wargear list. I am just stumbling around with the WYSIWYG nature of 40k so I wanted to clarify before I started teaching people the game.

Hi Unbeliever
not convinced that the issue is clear to a newb mate
otherwise the question wouldn't keep cropping up

also the search engine on Dakka is not particularly efficient, but thanks for the clarification
