I was successfully able to find a few kids/teens in the local homeschool crowd who are very interested in painting, and so basically we're putting together a generic hobby club, though the main interest is in miniature painting at this point.

Anyway, I was looking for a cheap starting point. I perused through GW's paint sets and to be honest it was disappointing. Can anyone recommend a good set, preferably with miniatures and paints, under the $50 range, that would be enough for a half a dozen kids to use, to determine if they really are interested in it? We'll look into something more expensive in the future but right now it wouldn't be worth it to spend $100 and find that only one of the kids was really interested.

There's a possibility the folks of two of the kids might have a problem with things like black magic/demons/etc so I'm trying to steer clear of that as much as possible.

My idea right now is either to buy some of Wargames Factory's historicals and some paints (cause then it would be educational) or get a couple of the Assault On Black Reach or Mines of Moria paint sets. Any other ideas?

I think the Assault on Black Reach would be a good starting point. The Space Marines and Orks are pretty abundant so you could get these from ebay vendors for cheap.

As for paints I would suggest the Vallejo Game Colors if you want a good set as they are cheaper than GW paints and require less clean up plus they won't dry up on you.

I also use hobby store acrylics like Delta Ceramcoat. They were on sale for 60 cents each.

I agree with the suggestion of using craft paints. As a beginer myself to 40k i spent 45 bucks on vajello paints and ended up using craft paint for the main colors on my marines because i didn't like the orange.

Craft paint doesn't go as far when you use it in the supplied tubes though so you may consider adding some floaid to to paint and seperating it into som vajello paint bottles to make it last a bit longer and you would have better drop mix control than a big huge glob you get from craft paint bottles,

Oh, I forgot to specify...I'm not exactly a beginner, been painting for 2+ years, though the others are. I'm actually going to be the unofficial teacher, though I'm not sure how they'll react to being taught by a 14-year-old.

I'll check out craft paints, though it may take me a while to adjust to it (before I've used strictly GW paints.) And if I use GW paints while they use craft paints, then they probably won't like it too much (if only because the GW pots are cooler)

Anyway, I'll keep browsing. The first meet ain't for 3 weeks so I've got time.

Thanks for the help so far

Na don't kid yourself about gw pots the only thing they are good for is putting tac on the top of them to use as a handle to paint models lol.
