I start with a black eye, then I take a mixture of whatever color I want the eyes to be 2 parts and chaos black 1 part, and paint a crescent moon shape covering only half (give or take a little for a darker/brighter effect) of the Chaos Black on the bottom right side. then I take the straight color with no chaos black and apply it before the mixed color dries completely (this will give it a better fade with minimal effort). After that dries, apply a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of your color and white and put the thinnest streak you can along the bottom right (make sure this is inset in the colored area a little bit, you don't want it along the edge). To really seal the deal, finish it off with the smallest dot of skull white you can right in the center top left of the still showing Chaos black. Make sure that during this entire process you maintain a small black outline, if this outline is compromised, paint it black and start over, cause it'll look like ass without the outline. Hope this helps!

Sounds like a good technique, can you possibly post step-by-step pics, just to show how it should look?

Thanks,

I applaud anyone who does those eye and gem effects with like 4 layers of diff colors, the white spots and streaks and all, especially those eldar folks who have to do a dozen per fig, slaneesh bless 'em.

But I can't take doing it. Its too small, too delicate, too many steps for me. I don't have the coordination or eyesight for 5 steps of different paints on something a few mm in size.

I found this neato method on the web: Use a gloss silver or chrome or maybe bronze as a base on the eyes/gems, and then use a tamiya clear color. After protecting with a dullcote, go back and put on a clear gloss. I found this technique here at Dr. Fausts clinic:

http://www.paintingclinic.com/clinic/paintgems.htm

Its fast, looks good at a distance. Of course up close (like, inches) it can't compare to the traditional methods, but I'm no golden demon painter/winner, nor will I ever be, so its good enough for me.

It's small, but the eyes are so important that I really appreciate anybody who takes the time to do them well (I don't do a great job myself) - looks good! I might try it when I'm back to painting infantry (Just got myself a 6 vehicle backlog though so it's gonna be a while >.<

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

I've done 2 sets of crisis suits and a team of broadsides with this method, you'll be pleased. also if you do it with the two dots on your pathfinders and fire warriors, it'll increase the look of your army. Do it on anything you could possibly pass as a Gem, or Lens, i mean, it's the 41st millenium, just come up with an excuse and use this technique, it's effective and easy

...urrrr... I dunno

I wonder if this would work as well on Orkish Bioniks. Only one way to find out; I'm using this method!

I've never painted orks, but i'm sure it would work great. i use this method for ANY gems/lenses/scopes/lights, pretty much everything. lol. post pics of the bionics when you finish them so we can see!

Thank you, very much. Though being an Eldar player I don't think I'm going to have to color many times I'll have to color gems. Terrible lie.

I have been looking for a tutorial of how to do gems/optics and this is the only one I could find that could produce great results easily, so thanks! My first try was on Snikrot:
