I've finished off the assault marine now. i might have added too much of watered-down chaos black wash. I had some trouble with the free-hand markings. i think in future i will just paint of transfers. C & C welcome

You really don't need to make 3 threads for this. You could just reply in your first thread, or hit the little button that says "Edit" on each of your posts.
Anyway, on topic. The snow basing looks nice, but the lighting in your picture is pretty bad, and I can't really see the effect of your wash or anything else. If you want an impromptu lightbox, do what I do:
- Put a piece of paper on a table, and prop up another piece behind it. This should form an L shape if you look at it from the side.
- Shine a lamp straight at it, like a powerful desk lamp.
- Have a second lamp shine down on it, also easily done with a desk lamp.
Anyway, that's what I do. It's not the best solution, but it's better than what you have now. Once you have a lighting setup like that we should be able to tell what's up with your painting. The only other thing I can see is that the teeth of your chainsword are red - I paint mine boltgun, as do most people. It's up to you, but I personally think they look a lot better that way - gives them more contrast.

ummm, the red is actually a fairly bad attempt at doing blood. there is some pva on there which i need a better picture to show you. The wash effect is really just a big dunk on of heavily watered down chaos black. i think in future i won't do it as although it makes everything gritty, it sort of takes out the "good blockness" (the stuff you see on GW's own painting)
sorry but how do you prop up a piece of paper?

I know the name is 'DARK' Angels but personally I'd try to stray away from painting them too dark.

My opinion? I like the uber dark Dark Angels thing ya got goin on. The free hand doesn't look too bad from what I can see, better than what I could do.
